If Moss isnt signed, I honestly would strongly consider giving up our 1st and 3rd rounder to the Raiders and pay big bucks for Nhamdi Asomugha.

never ever never ever

Re: Would you guys do this?

I'd either pay big bucks or give up draft picks, but not both.

The Pats already had a chance to re-sign Asante Samuel for big bucks

without giving up any draft picks.

I'll pass. Maybe trade for Suggs

True... but Asnate isnt the man up in your face I dare you to to throw it my way type corner Nhamdi is...

Re: Would you guys do this?

no....he is one of the best corners in this league...(the raiders cb)

but no....

we need a pass rush, and only adequate corners.....

Re: Would you guys do this?

It's my understanding that you can't even sign him in exchange for a first and a third. I believe the Raiders placed an exclusive franchise tag on him. So no one can sign him but them. That's my understanding, but please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

No way. We must stick with players whose names can still be yelled from the stands even when you're drunk.

Brew-ski!

Say-ow!

:D:D:D

Seriously though. Raiders put the franchise tag on him on February 20th.

I may be wrong as well, but here's how I understand it:

When you place the normal franchise tag on a player, you get the right of first refusal + compensation if you decide not to match. [If you place the transition tag, you pay less cash, but get no compensation.]

If you place the exclusive tag, no one can force you to match an offer, but that doesn't mean you can't trade the player--though I don't know what effect that would have on the salary cap. (Paging Miguel. . . . :))

Well, according to this usatoday article and wikipedia (not the best source, I know), the exclusive tag means he can't negotiate with any other team at all:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/raiders/2008-02-20-asomugha-franchise_N.htm?csp=34

Again, I could be wrong, but I'm assuming that means he can't be signed by another team at all. Am I interpreting that incorrectly? I don't do well with the technical NFL jargon.

EDIT: Re-reading your post, I definitely think they can trade him. But I seriously doubt they want to trade him if they placed the exclusive tag on him.

You are absolutely nuts. We can draft a star in the making corner in Rodgers-Cromartie and keep our picks. Are you crazy?

So ud rahter take RC with the seventh pick whos never played a NFL down and pay him a huge sum of money instead of givin that pick with a lousy 3rd rounder to the raiders for Nhamdi whos probably the best Corner in the game?

Are you crazy?

Re: Would you guys do this?

just bumpin the thread

Trade for Asomugha???

Nnamdi Asomugha is the best DB that is available (RFA). This is out of left field, but what if we offered Oakland a 3rd round pick this year for a player that is disgruntled because he got franchised (maybe a holdout?). Oakland is going to lose him eventually and all they will get back is a 3rd round compensatory selection in the draft the year after they lose him (3 years from now). They can get a 3rd round pick this year (a good year for DB's) and be in a better position in three years. They aren't going anywhere right now.

We are at our peak right now and I think we need a veteran at the LCB position. Lets do it before we slide down the other side of this mountain.

When will people understand this theory? (Yes i agree a pass rush is the key)

Want to solve the CB issue? Here: Draft Cason/McKelvin or to a lesser extent Rodgers-Cromartie early. Than in the 3rd or 4th round draft a corner like Jonathon Zennon (LSU) and sign Law for a one year deal. Problem solved, you get some young corners along with veteran influence for their rookie season, not to mention you still have Hobbs around...Issue solved....:rocker:

Re: Trade for Asomugha ???

I haven't heard he's disgruntled. The tag for corners this year is close to $10M, and as an exclusive tag his will be in excess of that. He would want a better deal than that guy the Eagles just signed...and Oakland would want a lot more than a 3rd. We aren't going to pay for a shutdown corner even if there is such a thing and one were available. That's not where we spend double digits. Even if we were to trade for Shepard, who fell out of favor in Philly over injury concerns, he's gonna want a deal here he ain't getting short of proving he's better than Asante and at least as durable - and probably not even then.

Re: OPINION: Should Pats trade for Asomugha? [merged]

Whose to say he's not another greedy arrogant bastard like Samuel? What the hell is it with cornerbacks and their egos?!

No way. Way too much to pay.

Re: OPINION: Should Pats trade for Asomugha? [merged]

Combine the extremely high draft compensation, with the large contract he would require, and you'll realize why the Patriots would likely never make that trade.
