I know everyone's incredibly nervous about re-signing Moss.

IMO the lack of movement on Moss is likely because the Pats are looking to re-do Brady's contract as well and the two are somewhat tied together, though I've seen very little attention given to this notion.

I don't think Brady would HAVE to re-do his contract to sign Moss to a $10 mil a year deal as many expect - but it also seems to me extending Brady and lowering his cap would allow the Pats to be much more active in free agency.

Is it just me or do most people not expect Brady to do an extension this year? To me its a common sense move... whether it happens this year or next its going to happen, and the fact that we're looking to add a $10 million receiver strikes me as making now the time to do it.

I hope they sign Moss ASAP but it wouldn't surprise me if, when the whole story is known, it turns out that Brady's extension was a big part of the delay on Moss's signing.

If I really wanted Moss, I would offer to redo my contract. If I was making as much money as Tom Brady in endorsements, money in the NFL wouldn't mean much. So yes, I would expect Brady to offer it.

Brady probably also realizes that having Moss around could very well extend his career. The more teams have to back off the line of scrimmage and double up over the top to respect the deep threat, the less effectively they can blitz the QB.

I don't think the Giants got this Memo. Please resend.

I have a don't-worry-about-Brady's-contract policy. Whatever the permutations of his various deals throughout the rest of his career, I'm confident he will:

A) Have been a Patriot every day from his first to the day he retires
B) Have been very well paid for his service.

It wouldn't shock me if he re-structured several more times, as he already has done once, but I also don't think it's necessarily a requirement to get Moss back on the team.

I expect the Patriots to redo Brady's contract.

After they redo it, I expect that Brady's cap hit will go UP. That's right UP!

Brady needs to be redone and raised right now.

He's worth $18 million a year on the open market. And he's getting $10.

It's high time that the Patriots addressed this. Give Tom a new long term contract and ask him to take a hometown discount. $14 million a year.

You don't think this is what he's worth? 3 years ago Peyton signed for $15 million a year when the cap was below $90 million. He had 20% of the cap.

20% of next year's cap (presumably at the $125 million range going by the rate of increase) is $23-24 million a year.

Think about it.

Brady's market rate right now is $18 million.

Brady chose to sign that contract. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a raise and won't get one, but your post seems to suggest the Patriots are somehow jerking him around, which couldn't be further from the truth. When it's time for Brady's next contract (or before), he'll be very well compensated.

???

I suggested they were jerking him around?

No, not at all.

Brady has been redoing his contract every year to help the team. The Patriots can pay him now, or pay him a lot more later.

The closer you let him get to free agency, the higher the salary cap rises.

What happens when he's a year away and Carson Palmer has just signed for $18 or 20 a year? What do you do then?

That's why the Patriots should get ahead of the game and give him a Ty Warren deal. Tom's contract ends in a couple years (2). Get ahead of it, give the guy the $$.

Look at this:

Season Manning's cap number Brady's cap number
2008 $18.19 million $12.817 million
2009 $20.69 million $12.817 million
2010 $19.95 million $11.317 milion

Are you really telling me this doesn't concern you at all?

He won't need to ... he may getting $$$ from Calvin Klein wearing a thong.

Side Dish: Tom Brady in his underwear?

Gisele Bundchen won't be the only person seeing Tom Brady in his skivvies if Calvin Klein has his way. We hear the designer has offered the Patriots quarterback seven figures to blast David Beckham and his Armani underwear campaign right off the billboards.

Nope. Not at all. Why should it? Brady's not in a $$ contest with that yahoo, being the highest paid QB is not what drives him. Super Bowls are what drives Tom and THANK GOD for that.

It all depends on Brady. I don't think he should restructure his contract again...he earns his money and is underpaid compared to some QBs out there with less bling. I don't know what he makes in endorsements, but I know it doesn't scratch the surface of what Manning makes. I completely enjoyed the "Randy Moss Experience", but I would sooner see the money go into our defense. If we have learned anything, record breaking offenses can be stopped...a great defense wins Super Bowls.

Why should it? Because when Tom is making $11 mill, Carson is making $18 mill, and Brady' contract is in the last year, you'll have difficulty sleeping.

I have a question regarding the cap. In a very weak FA market like this years would it be possible for the Pats to sign Moss to a contract like 5 mill bonus, 15 mill 1st year, then 5 & 5?

In other words structure the contract so the cap hit is much worse the 1st year ( using up excess cap space we werent going to use anyways ) & have lower cap hits going forward?

I understand what you're saying, but there's only so much cap room that they can use. If they want to give him $30M, I don't think there's any real way for them to have more than about $12M against this year's cap.

Oh, Boy. I promise I won't. Tom Brady is not going anywhere. You take Carson's money over the life of his career and he does not touch Tom's $$ no., infact with the exception of Peyton, no one will touch the amount of $$'s Tom will make in the NFL (at the QB position).

I understand your concern, and I'm glad that Tom does not think like you, but as I said it's not about the money (I'm not stupid enough that say he's gonna play for free or for some stuipd no.), but it's not being the highest paid QB.

Listen, I'm not saying he's asking to be the highest paid. I'm saying there's a discrepancy between getting paid $10 million and a market value of $20 odd million.

The Patriots could make it easier on everyone by redoing it now. Not to make him the highest paid, but to bring him up to par.

Also, assuming both Carson and Tom play the same amount of years, I'd say that Palmer could easily surpass Tom based on the fact that he will max out and that he was the #1 pick in the draft.

Fwiw, Jordan was usually not near the top of the NBA in salary during his hey day. He knew what it took to build a championship team, and he sacrificed for it.
It's nice to see Tom not try to get market value, so the team can build.
I love the fact that some qb's hog huge cap #'s from their team.

Peyton should be ridiculed for taking up so much cap room, especially considering how he whores himself out for any and all advertising he can get his mitts on.

Not to mention showing up at Sweet 16 parties so that the girl's MILF mom can pinch his butt on the dance floor.

After seeing these pics below, I was not at all surprised to see he and his brother competing in a licking contest on TV.

Not if they lose Moss.

Listen, I'm not saying your a flat out idiot, but if you don't grasp the difference between cap hit and contract or what a player is taking home and when, and that restructures seldom result in player losing money, in fact Brady gained guaranteed money when he restructured last season - don't post about it. BTW Tom's cap hit is over $14M this year.

Manning and Palmer's present deals AVERAGE $13M. Tom's averages $10. However Tom has taken home an average of $12M over the first three years of his deal. Same as Manning did. Probably same as Palmer will.

I personally would extend Brady now primarily because deals will be difficult to craft if the owners opt out of the CBA and all the rules on contracts extending into an uncapped year kick in.

Tom's deal can't be revisited until April - since it was restructured last April to accommodate signing Randy. And if you revisit it again this year, then you can't sign him to an extension until 12 months has elapsed, which would be sometime in 2009. Given the uncertainty about the labor agreement, I wouldn't want to HAVE to deal with extending Brady then, or risk his hitting the market after the first uncapped season. Although the Krafts might also be concerned about committments made now in the event there is a work stoppage on the horizen.
