I'm a little confused with this Colvin situation. I was under the impression that he had one more (expensive) year left with the Pats.

Yet the Pats cut Colvin.

Now why would they cut him when they could trade him and at least get something for him?

Some of you on here know a lot more about the cap, and franchising, and compensatory picks, than others....... so this is mostly directed towards you.

Why didn't the Pats just trade Colvin for a 4th round pick?
If that won't work, Why not trade him for a 6th instead of just releasing him?

Do they get a compensatory pick for releasing him (or something) that would allow this mess to make sense?

otherwise, i don't why they didn't just trade him and get whatever they could.... a 6th rounder would be better than nothing..

One of two possibilities. No market for a guy who's over 30, probably a little overpaid, and injury prone. Or the Patriots are looking at bringing him back with a different contract, something that would be impossible if another team held his rights. I'd like to believe it's the latter.

Let see team A is calling all the team 4 days before march 1st when it has to pay a player who is currently injured and will not pass physical.

hmm i am sure some team might have jumped to pickup the march 1 bonus without even a physical or redid a contract for this injured player instead of seeing if he gets healthy by training camp and try to bring him in.

c'mon keegs.... the same reason they released willie mac. sure colvin is younger but he also ahd a busted foot. willie mac didn't. honestly if you were a team... would yoou give away a draft pick if you had an inkling that the team might release him and you'd get him alot cheaper? why take on a big contract(tail end of it) when you don't have to?

but all you need is one idiot.

And there's more than 1 in the nfl.

I think he could have been traded for a 6th rounder at least...... no?

If I remember correctly, it has been a long time (8 years) since the last 6th round pick was someone who stuck with the team or even made a big difference. So, to me, it's worthless. Just look how many rookies made the roster last year. Even Lua got cut now. We need quality, not quantity.

How about because it was a better situation for Colvin. Colvin didn't want to take a paycut and Pats wouldn't keep him at that salary. Trading him wouldn't likely bring a lot back in return and Colvin would only be able to negotiate with one team.

Cutting Colvin allowed him to maximize his value on the open market. Cutting Colvin before Friday allowed him to get a jump on negotiations before the upcoming spending frenzy.

I know Belichick is evil incarnate  but he does value players who give everything they have to the team. Maybe he was balancing Colvin's interests along with the interests of the team.

good answer.

And i think a 6th round pick is better than nothing.. I'll never change my mind about that.

We've had a few 6th rounders work out for us.

who is gonna trade with the pats and be perceived as being duped.

the pats got the better end of the moss deal

the pats got the better end of the san fran deal

no one in the afc east will trade with them

the best would be if the jets traded vilma to the lions and the pats had a trade in the works with detroit for vilma with mangini having no knowledge of it

One also has to wonder what Colvin's real value in the free market is...what team wants to inherit the next Pats dump and have overpaid...I think the Branch signing is probably the only one an ex [significant] pat besides my man Vinatieri can look to as a success story. Law, Milloy, Mac, and the rest have, imo, been busts for the amount of $ they earned back in free agency. I have to expect, especially after the Moss trade et al that everyone else has referenced, that many of the other teams in the league are getting more and more gunshy about picking up the Pats detritus and starting to drink the punch of BB/FO releasing players for good reason. If that's the (fingers crossed) case, we may still end up with him at a much reduced rate if he isn't too hurt by the way we did it...Not expecting it, but it wouldn't be the first time I've been pleasantly surprised in the offseason.

Like I've said in previous threads, this is all about his injury. Currently he could not pass a physical. Chances are he is going to miss some or all of training camp. I don't think any team would pay his salary for damaged goods.

Doesn't that matrix say that you need to discount a pick by one round when considering deferred compensation?

And the reason they dealt with SF is because they had an extra pick from Dieon in another deferred compensation pick. So now they are actually picking for their pick TWO years ago (save me the minor detail that they technically used their Seattle pick and traded their own).

And if they had actually made their second pick one of these two years, it would be enough to push them over the top from both Manning losses.

So I don't think they actually "came out on top".

I don't know about that. Like I said, since Tom Brady, all the sixth round picks so far haven't been to productive in the NFL. Granted we still don't know how much Mike Richardson will contribute, everyone else was as close to zero as you can get. L.K.Smith also got some playing time, but is mainly the last NT on the depth chart and who knows how long he will stick at that position. So by saying "a few", you meant maybe one.

simple. he got cut after he failed a physical..u cant trade a guy who fails a physical..

The Branch signing has been a success for Seattle?

How much trade value do you think there is for an injured LB who might or might not be able to play this season at a price tag of $5 million?

If Pioli says that Colvin isn't worth his salary, then the rest of the GMs in the league probably realize that that pretty definitely means that he just isn't worth his salary.
