RotoWorld Link..........

In addition to DE Justin Smith and possibly LB Lance Briggs, the 49ers are expected to stongly pursue free agent LB Calvin Pace.

The Niners hope to sign either Smith or Pace, who is expected to command $14 million guaranteed. Another team interested in Pace is rumored to be the Patriots, who could shift him inside like they did Adalius Thomas in 2007.

Most of us have assumed that with a Colvin cut that the Patriots would take a long look at Pace. This just further pushes it that it indeed may be true and that may be an intention of the Patriots staff.

13 Million guranteed is not much anymore.

I like it a Colvin for a Calvin.

I like Pace's age and production last year at OLB, but is it likely he could successfully go from DE to OLB now to ILB?

I could see him in a rotation with AD at OLB.

Excellent. Something we needed to do.

Isn't that more or less what Bruschi did? We need him at ILB, not OLB. We are perilous at ILB with the geriatric Bruschi and Seau currently slated as the starters there. And it's likely one or both will retire.

Why not?

Lets look at our own LB's from college and early in the NFL careers.

Bruschi was a DE in college, OLB for years with us then an ILB

Vrabel was DE in col, OLB for us, then a ILB player

Thomas was a DE, then an OLB, then an ILB

Colvin was a DE, OLB

It happens more often than you think. What also is interesting is the fact that the Patriots saw Pace flourish in a 3-4 system that is built very similar to ours from Whisenhunt implanting it last year. Ken W was a Steelers coach for years if you dont recall.

I guess the 49ers are having buyer's remorse over that fat contract they gave to TBC.

PFnV will be very happy to hear this.

Calvin Pace, Calvin Pace, and morever, Calvin Pace.

Awesome! I've been harping on Pace for a month now. Good to see the Pats maybe making a run for him. Good LB, lots of upside and YOUNG!!

I was a big fan of Pace when he was coming out of Wake Forest. He has always used his hands very well. He is physical and disciplined with a pass rush repetoire - not just a speed guy. IMO a guy like Pace is much more likely as an addition then a #7 overall raw DE.

ILB year 1 might be a bit of a stretch, but admittedly I didn't see to many Cardinals games.

Can't wait to see what BB/Pioli have up their sleeves.

Nice. If we sign Pace, then we don't need to draft OLB. We could just pick up a very good ILB in the 2nd-3rd round range, and use our 1st round pick for a stud corner to replace Asante.

Thomas could stay inside too.

Pace/Vrabek outside.
Thomas/(Seau/Bruschi) inside.

Remember guys dont get your hopes up. Just because this came up last year that the Patriots were interested in Thomas doesnt mean every year we will get one of the biggest guys out there.

This is only rumored interest right now, but it is good to discuss the possibility of a possible addition the size of Pace.

I think Calvin and Hobbs would be a pretty solid team...

We don't know if the rumor is true but if it is He could just be coming into his own, playing olb for the first time in his career and excelling at it.
I would think BB would want to sit him down and poke thru his head a little bit before he invested any stake in the guy.
SF does worry me a little bit but where would he rather go we were 18 and 0 BABY!

Would be easier that way instead of trying to throw another NEW guy inside.

But then that puts a lot of pressure on us of finding a ILB either through FA or through the draft (which there seems to be plenty of candidates).

That's assuming neither Seau nor Bruschi retire. Regardless, if it's at all possible, I would prefer to have neither starting for us this season.

Pace/Thomas/Hobson/Vrabel

Thomas/Pace/Hobson/Vrabel

Mmm.........

I would at least like some to entertain the thought of Clark Haggans as well.
