ESPN PUTS THE STAKE IN SALISBURY

As you likely already know, Sean Salisbury is out at ESPN. (I was out of pocket when the e-mail from ESPN announcing the departure came through the line.)​

The move was, in our view, long overdue. Per USA Today, Salisbury’s contract had expired. He likely sealed his fate with that disgraceful on-air dissing of John Clayton last month, during which Salisbury called Clayton the “Cryptkeeper.”​

As regular visitors to this site know, we don’t care much for Salisbury. He’s loud, he’s a jerk, and far too often he speaks in sweeping absolutes. Also, he reportedly was suspended for showing cell-phone photos of his penis to colleagues at the network. Frankly, we’re surprised he lasted there as long as he did.​

True to form, Salisbury is crowing about his departure.​

“I have grown as much as I can at ESPN and decided to expand my horizons,” Salisbury said in a statement. “I have created a brand and it’s time to expand into other opportunities in TV, radio, Internet, publishing, movies and public speaking, among others. My resume speaks for itself as a football analyst, and I believe I can talk all sports with the best of them.”​

Hey, Sean — a periodic cameo in an Adam Sandler flick doesn’t make you an actor. A web site that looks like crap and that rarely was updated before it went off line won’t turn you into an Internet mogul.​

Publishing? Please. (Unless, of course, you’ve got a proposal for “Cell Phone Porn for Dummies.”)​

Sean Salisbury needed ESPN far more than ESPN needed him, and unless he plans to handle weekend sports at the UPN affiliate in Tallahassee, his broadcasting career is officially over.

While that is kind of funny, I don't think it's true. He'll catch on somewhere. The problem is there are too many somewheres.

ESPN did hire Cris Carter.

I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm going to miss the guy. He was always completely pro-Pats and whenever a scandal arrived, he was there to defend us.

Hell, he was the most pro-Patriot guy on the entire network. Thank you for your support Sals and I wish him luck in the future.

Be it sending pictures of his penis to his coworkers or defending BB.

Which is a great joke...if you are in college with your fraternity brothers. To say that on the air to another adult is beyond me.

Salisbury was the most entertaining analyst on any of those shows, and truly hilarious with his verbal ass-whippings of Clayton (who should have been fired long ago).

im with you . i liked salisbury .he was very passionate about football and he was the only person on espn i enjoyed watching .

Exactly. Even if it's true (I've heard so many jokes about Clayton and progeria (sp?)), you don't say it on air to his face. If you need to insult the guy instead of logically debate him, you don't deserve to be an analyst on ESPN.

I'm not a fan of Clayton, but Salisbury should have shown him some respect on the air. Clayton's also 100x more accurate of an analyst than Salisbury. I don't know how he was entertaining, all he'd do is try to talk over other people to make his wrong point. He offered almost zero insight or news. ESPN did the right thing.

I agree. I can't stand that little **** clayton. They would be critiquing a QB and Clayton would use that as an opportunity to take digs at Salisbury's performance during his playing days. What a little ass.

Clayton at least has reports and "people" that he talks to on teams. Granted, I don't have ESPN anymore, but I don't remember Salisbury saying anything that 1) I didn't know already or 2) I thought came from anyone smarter than a 6th grader. Maybe I've missed something in the past few months, but I after the "cryptkeeper" incident, I didn't exactly think of him in a better light.

Clayton, imo, is much more bearable than Salisbury. At least Clayton was trying to talk football instead of going ad hominem. A little respect for colleagues would be nice.
