some of the 25 would be the signining bonus...so yea, the gauranteed cash would be included in the 25m....say 12m of it is gauranteed, and another 6m is based on incentives....hence 7m is his salary over 3 years...

why do you guys constantly try to beat this dead horse? the market will establish his price...if it's 15 million a year then it's 15 million a year...it has NOTHING to do with any perceived limits on your part. Now say a team offers Moss 10 million and he comes back to the Pats and says he'll take 8.5 or 9 mil from them....YOU won't do this deal because it's "TOO MUCH!!!"??...IT'D BE BELOW MARKET. So then, from what I gather, all you guys want cheap WR's and refuse to pay the all time TD in a season holder below market because it offends your monetary sensibilities? What it comes down to is you have to PAY for performance in this league offensively.Moss in his second year with Brady would definitely be a huge plus for the Patriots offense.

I don't think that "the market" will establish, or dictate, what the NEP determines Moss' value to the NEP should be. The FO probably already knows the parameters within which it would re-sign him. Just because another club could be stupid enough to offer him $10M x 5 years doesn't mean that the FO would be grateful to him if he would re-sign here for $8.5/9.

BTW, in the poll I voted for $5M/year. I really, really hope that Rosie wasn't released so that Moss can "get paid." The New England Patriots have won 3 SBs without Randy Moss; they've won nothing with him.

12-15 mill in guaranteed for Moss over the next few years isn't unreasonable. Sure, I was hoping he'd work out a hometown-discount type deal, but we are talking about re-signing one of the few best receivers in the history of the game, the second most important player on our team last season, and a player who was a huge reason why we had the greatest offense in the history of the game.

That was his cap hit, not what we "paid" him that year. And we cut him the next year rather than absorb his $12M cap hit.

The top WR's are currently making between $7.5-9M contractually (AAV) although some of them will not see the end of those deals. However, Larry Johnson has made escalators in his rookie deal that will push his cap hit into the teens unless he gets extended this off season. Ocho Cinco is angling for a new deal since his only averages around $5M+. The Franchise Tag for WR this year is $7.8M I believe, and that is the average of the top 5 last season.

Seymour and Brady are in deals that average $10M per, although Brady's clearly represented a home town discount while Seymour's was a short term solution made cap friendly because it got done a year early and was spread over 4 seasons which made it closer to an $8M per deal. Thing is both of those players if extended will average well over $10M per. Freeney's deal averages $13M. And at the end of the day it's all about the guaranteed money. Brady got $26M (on a 6 year deal) and Seymour got $18M (on his 3 that was really 4 year extension.)

Given the way the Brady to Moss connection struggled down the stretch I would be a little leery of extending Moss at $10M per. But if it is a short extension (3 years) and the guaranteed money is only $12-15M as per the AOL rumor, then I don't have a real issue with it because depending on structure it can average $6-7.5 for the first two with a $4-5M dead cap hit in 2010 if they don't want him to play that 3rd season for $15M+/- on the cap. He will have a dead cap of $2M this year on top of the new deal, but that's water under the bridge - he earned it and if he hadn't we wouldn't be discussing an extension.

I agree - lower his cap, make sure he's here until retirement even if the league goes uncapped and don't have to deal with the contractual poison pill crap that raises it's ugly head in the last capped season if in fact the owners opt out of the CBA. He should be extended through 2013 or 2014.

Co-sign. Brady will be effective well into his career, as his biggest assets are his brain, and his pocket presence, neither will be affected by age. It's time to wrap him up for a large portion of the remainder of his career, and be generous, as you say, the scenario of a cap-free NFL exists.
