What is going on? I thought the Pats weakness last year was the aging linebackers. They tried to sign Zach Thomas, and now they are releasing Colvin. The only reason I can think of is that they are going to sign him to a new contract.

He was too slow. They're going to try to add some speed. I guess he didn't recover well from his injury.

In another thread someone noted Colvin's father said it was just a broken foot and had no impact on next year. I'm sure there will be takers. I hope (but doubt) the Pats are one of them.

If they were going to keep him couldn't they just have extended him? They have 2.5 mil against the cap without him here. If they bring him back, that's another 2 or 3 at least. They could have extended him and his 08 cap figure would be around that 5-5.5 anyway.

A broken foot is a very serious, potentially career-ending injury, for an NFL player. Sure, they usually come back to play, but often as a shadow of their previous selves (see Ty Law or Shaun Alexander) or to face a series of foot related injuries (see Jeremy Shockey).

I'm not saying whether Colvin's injury is serious or not. We don't know except that the Pats IR'd him almost instantly, suggesting they thought it was serious. However, we can't consider his release without factoring the risk of a serious foot injury. For example, you wouldn't want to do a three year extension at umpteen million a year until you know whether or not he'll be able to play on his foot.

I know some here liked Colvin but he didn't do anything special IMO. He came here to get after QB's and he was not to special in that area. He was average at best in coverage so basically too much money for what he can do. If he'll come back cheaper then we can use him. If he doesn't recuperate very well he'll end up being a JAG.

It sounds like the pats needed the cap space sooner than later. Expect the pats to use some of that cap space on a FA LB come friday when the FA market is open.

We were just damn lucky to get what we got out of Colvin. When he went down in his second game with the Pats, odds were that he would never play again. Given his signing bonus, that would have been a complete disaster from a cap standpoint. Nightmare scenario.

As it turned out, we didn't get much out of him (a complete missed year and another year before he was particularly effective), but at least we didn't get a goose-egg from a big free agent signing.

This is a guarantee in my opinion that Thomas will be lined up outside next year. Also, this will hopefully be indicative of the Pats drafting acouple LB's in April. Bring on Jonathan Goff!!!

A few here said we may cut Colvin so it's not really out of the blue. I'd imagine we'd try to resign him no? If not then AD may just get more productive outside.

More accurately: serious enough that they didn't expect him to be able to contribute enough to hold a roster spot for him.

This really makes NO Freaking sense to me whatsoever......I did not think he had suffered a career ending injury here.....the guy is only 31 isn't he? Couldn't we have gotten something for him in a trade at the least? Here we are gunning for an eggshell in Zach Thomas who is one hit away from the end of his career......and we CUT Rosy Colvin.....unless I am missing something about Colvin's health......I say this move is idiotic and will come back to bite us.........BB must have something in the works......or has lost his mind!
