OT: ESPN 890 Taking on Water

Re: OT:ESPN 890 Taking on Water

A shame. If Felger wasn't such an a-hole he could have easily made inroads
into Ordway and his band of idiots.

Re: OT:ESPN 890 Taking on Water

Too bad, cuz I kinda like 890. WEEI gets worse and worse by the minute. Mike Holley is the only reasonable host they have these days. Everyone else is a homer or an appologist of some sort. All those losers do is yell over each other & pass gas on the air.

Re: OT:ESPN 890 Taking on Water

Too bad because at least with Felger you knew you would get some football.

EEI is a baseball machine.

Ohh well guess I will use the serius more.....

Re: OT:ESPN 890 Taking on Water

Somewhere on the heels of a disappointing Superbowl appearance, Mike Vrabel and Matt Light finally have something to quietly chuckle about. What was it Vrabes said to a protesting Felgie when last they parted - No, we're done. LOL

You don't build an empire around biting the hand that feeds you when it's a perpetual championship contender in the midst of a dynasty run. Even in Boston. Ordway and WEEI are smart enough to grasp that, and while they still pander at times to the brotherhood of the miserable, mostly they ride the wave of 5 World Championships won by the local 25 or 53 in the last several seasons. The guys who expand their profile nationally and get them choice seats at the press table and nearly annual junkets to the big dances. In an effort to carve out some sort of niche for himself and ESPN, Felger went at it from a polar opposite direction. That they even bothered to send his crew to Spring Training this season is a howl... He'd have done better ratings wise if he'd stayed home and talked Football - and not just trying to convince every guest that there had to be a story here with the potential for local devastation...

Felger also lacked personal committment to the effort. Can't even count the number of times he was MIA on his own show or how his FNSE now Comcast TV gigs didn't allow the program to run a 4 hour segment without using flash boys and sidekicks. And he was unwilling to entirely seperate from the equally sinking Herald - it's as if his plan was to have enough balls in the air that at least one would always remain in play.

Eh, Sara will just have to put in for some more shifts. And Lobel will get him some more hours on Sports Final (even after he tried to directly compete with it in the run up to this Superbowl...). TEflon man, that's Felgie. He'll be back on WEEI before we know it, but likely taking it on the chin for being such a career putz.

Re: OT:ESPN 890 Taking on Water

I liked the idea of what they were doing, but Felger started, was quite good and then became the Ron Borges of the radio...Yes, he talked football, but he was overbearing and negative..arrogant and pompous..and unlistenable for more than a few minutes. I liked the Friday interviews..but just thought he was too much of a puyz to listen all the time. the best sgow was the Troy Brown Show, which lasted a few months, having some interesting non-football talk. Another station is needed, but never with felger.

Re: OT:ESPN 890 Taking on Water

Too bad. I actually like Felger's show. Not for Felger, but his guests. Andy Hart and Tom Casale are pretty good. He has Mike Florio on which at least can get you to throw stuff at your radio. He also has a lot of the ESPN network guys.

I can barely listen to WEEI anymore. The morning show is just horrible between the political stuff, Meterperel's stupidity of playing the contrarian, and Dennis' and Callahan's anti-Belichick rants. I can stomach the midday show. The Big Show is far too dominanted with stupid Pete Sheppard and Fred Smerlas homer to the point of almost mocking Pats fans jibberish.

I guess if ESPN890 goes away, it is Sirius NFL Radio every afternoon. Maybe 1510 the Zone will wise up and instead of doing Boxing talk get a real host and talk football to fill the void.

This is just plain old nonsense. Weei is all pats all the time during the football season. Honestly can you stop. The red sox complex around here is unreal.

Radio stations program content based on what the people want. During football season it is all pats talk , baseball season it is all baseball.

My Lord

Despite the obvious drawbacks, there have been many times where I have turned from the incessant Bankofamericasox talk on WEEI to happily find Patriots talk happening on 890. It's been a welcome alternative.

Pahleese... Hart and Casale were so caught up in playing grab ass giggles with Felger and his agenda for most of the season they were becoming unlistenable - Casale is just on principle - he has a voice made for print. Although I sensed they backed away from the boy in the wake of Walkthrough-gate. And the national views of the talking heads from ESPN can be found on any other number of venues. In fact they as well as the PFW crew will be back on WEEI once ESPN doesn't have a local show here. Only then rather than have to listen to Felger try to spin them his way or reverently laud their drivel if it pre-fits his agenda that day, they may find themselves challenged to defend some of their half baked opinions.

Maybe it's an age and demographic thing but listening to that overwound, hysterical fan boy edge in Felger's delivery, and the constant juvenile, mindless personal banter with the 20 somethings he was surrounded with who had that if I'm on ESPN I've arrived immature know it all mentality going, was generally not worth the wait for the occasional guest. The ones you wanted to hear from, the players, you could hear the restraint if not contempt in their voices when the had to deal with Felger's interview process. Felger and a lot of mediots fail to grasp that fans want to know what players and teams think or even might be thinking, but even absent that they could care less what a mediot with zero access thinks. And you don't get information from people you're wilfully and openly committed to exacerbating for personal gain (a scoop even by player misstep). Every interview he's done since the Superbowl has begun and ended with his use of the line, yeah - but... in a concerted to effort to shape opinion here and beyond irrespective of his guests POV. The only thing Michael succeeded in doing is making it THE MICHAEL FELGER SHOW. Pathetic.

Sorry, but that hasn't been true for some time now. Felger is in Ft. Myers and was all last week. The only football he's talked in several weeks now is spygate related. Whenever I switch to get away from other topics, Felger is either on commercial break or playing slap ass with his sidekicks or trying to convince someone that BB COULD be in trouble...or one of the sidekicks is getting to do a last hour on basketball or hockey...

By the way, WEEI has even started having weekend guys on Sundays and they have been covering the Patriots off season much more than the Sox who are a little anti-climactic beyond the Schilling mini-drama this off season.

Re: OT:ESPN 890 Taking on Water

Point 1 I liked to make.. To the person that said Holley was the best of the group.. All I have to say is I AGREE WITH U 100%!!!

2nd Point, I'm not a huge Felger guy at all, but it was an alternative to WEEI when their hosts go on rants..

I'm seriously considering getting siruis.. Just waiting for XM and them to join together..

Re: OT:ESPN 890 Taking on Water

Aside from Felger, the only other person who talked football on that station was Kevin Winter. He and our own Chris Price did a sunday morning show during the season and I know that Winter did stuff from 6-7 some nights. Better than Mike Adams down the dial!

Re: OT:ESPN 890 Taking on Water

We need 890 to stay on the air for one reason and one reason only.

Craig Mustard.

They have had a LOT of football talk...but Felger is just terrible..even today he was talking about teh Patriots kissijng Moss's ass not franchising him and HOW he hates it. Funny how at other times when the Pats have used the franchise tag he has taken the plaayer's side and thought it wasn't the right move. He has more faces than Mount Rushmore..the only consistent thing is his hate for the Patriots.. I LOVE football talk..but when its with him, it can't be long lasting. I get sick of his blatant pompousness and how it is all about him. Too bad this wave won't be washing him away as well. And what is sad is that he started pretty fair and good and listenable...and then it all went to his head.

Wow, The Felger / Sara Underwood family is taking a big financial downfall lately with Sara being let go as of next week.

Meh, I don't know why anyone would celebrate losing a sports channel. WEEI is a commercial marathon with the occasional SAWX talk interspersed. It sucks pretty badly save for Patriots Monday.

The last thing we need is fewer Big Show alternatives.

Thats ESPN for you. not just felger. Say something conflicting make listeners react.

i usually listen to the WFAN. its not local and is new york based but much more sane and more interviews and national sports oriented than a bunch of people yelling at each other.
