Re: Jets to Vilma: Find a trading partner

I'll say it first: BB liked him in the draft.

However, many people felt he would struggle in the 3-4. I think the last 2 years more confirmed that idea than debunked it. So, how BB would feel about him today may be different. (Of course you can't overlook the possibliity that BB will feel he will coach him better than Mangini did)

Vil-Ma!!![/fred flintstone]

Re: Jets to Vilma: Find a trading partner

Whats the deal with Vilma and the 3-4?I've heard and read the remarks he doesnt play as well in the 3-4 as the other defensive formations, from any of you who have played or coached ,does this ring true?He cant learn a new system,or his skill set doesnt fit well?

Its not learning the system, its the ability to play it.
Vilma is a small, fast, instictive MLB. His skills are best used in a system that keeps blockers off of him, lets him read the play and run to it.
In OUR 3-4, his primary responsiblity would be to control the 2 gaps on either side of the G. His speed is less of an asset. His instinctiveness is less of an asset, but still a valuable one. The issue is that in our system he would spend the afternoon needing to take on Gs and shedding the blocks. He is very small for that.
His strengths are accentuated in a 4-3 scheme, and his weaknesses are not critical.
His weaknesses are accentuated in a 3-4, and his strengths are less important.

This is similar to the Zack Thomas argument. Thomas is not best suited to play 3-4 ILB. But he has a lot of skills that will help compensate for his weaknesses. He is not prototype, but would still get the job done.
I'm not ready to put Vilma in that class, because Thomas is as smart as LBs come, and Vilma to me is a track star who is a good tackler, so if you let him roam free he is good. I don't see the LB skills that Thomas has in Vilma.

hey..Tedy Bruschi wouldnt be good without the DL in front of him. i think it has a lot to do with that..you need some help if your smaller and thats what Bruschi's getting. Vilma had a bust in front of him trying to play. he did improve as he got experience in 3-4 and i dont think its as bad as people make it out to be

A 3rd thats it? Not that im interested with him being only a year away from FA but thats really low for a former 1st rounder and rookie of the year.

Didn't he have microfracture surgery? Big risk I think - that surgery is still an iffy proposition; some guys come back; some never do; even those that do often have 18 months+ of rehab

Re: Jets to Vilma: Find a trading partner

I don't see the Jets ever trading for Vilma, but they can turnaround and do the same thing that the Jets did with Branch and make him an offer to force the Jets hands.

I still don't think Vilma would work here as a LB. He seems to be better suited for an one-gap style because as other people pointed out he is about speed rather than power. I don't know if he is fast enough to be a safety, but he might be better suited in the Rodney Harrison role which many times is like an extra LB without having to take a lot of guards on straight up.

Re: Jets to Vilma: Find a trading partner

Why can't Vilma play weakside OLB in the 3-4? He has the speed to blitz, the ability to cover, and would only have to worry about an occasional block from a FB or RB. If there is one thing our defense completely lacked when Colvin was injured, it was an effective pass rush.

Dude, two words - Pulling Guards. Ouch!

He just isnt big enough. OLBs dont take on FBs or Rbs, they take on TEs, pulling Gs, OTs.
Our 3-4 OLB is much, much closer to a DL in most other sytems than a Lb.

Re: Jets to Vilma: Find a trading partner

The jets and patriots have as much chance of trading with each other, as the Red Sox and Yankee's ... Forget it , the only Vilma is a Pat if he is cut..

Re: Jets to Vilma: Find a trading partner

Vilma will shine when he gets away from the jets ... He's being evaluated in this thread as if he plays for a good coach ... he's playing for Mangini. Give him a good coach Like Belichick, Turner, Reid etc then watch him go.

Re: Jets to Vilma: Find a trading partner

he can be good in a 3-4 with some big guys ahead of him. he is amazing in a 4-3 so if a team like Jaguars get him, lucky them

i think a team like the Broncos could make this happen . Vilma & DJ Williams next to each other..thats just crazy and i witnessed it watching Miami Hurricanes. Maybe Javon Walker if Coles is really unhappy or just give draft pick

Is he fast enough to turn him into a safety?

Re: Jets to Vilma: Find a trading partner

i'd be pro vilma, i think he could take the place of roosevelt colvin. it'd be nice to have some youth at linebacker.

Jonathan Vilma: 6-1 230 lbs

Rosey Colvin 6-3 250 lbs
Mike Vrabel 6-4 261 lbs
Adalius Thomas 6-2 270 lbs:eek:

Belichicks preference is for "Big guys who can run."

Junior Seau 6-3 250 lbs
Tedy Bruschi 6-1 247 lbs

Power O???

I agree with the rest.

i doubt Bruschi is nearly as much as Seau. Sure theres listed weights but i think Bruschi is closer to 240 than 250

they dont really update weights for veterans that often in NFL but most of these guys are probably over or less than what they are listed as. For all we know, Vilma could've bulked up this year. Besides..like i said @ another board. BB doesnt eliminate players that are light in weight. Hes shown interest in Vilma & Sims in the drafts, He offered a contract to a 5"11 230 lb LB who has far less speed than either. He said something when we played Lions like "I think a guy like Sims can definitely play in a 3-4, theres ways around size, if you work hard, prepare well and really love the game, you can do it."
