As usual on top of everything as it concerns the Pats:

Surprising that Stallworth and Pats are in discussions.

Zach Thomas update
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 21, 2008 05:43 PM

INDIANAPOLIS – Caught up with agent Drew Rosenhaus here at the combine and he touched on a few items of business he has with the Patriots.

On LB Zach Thomas and his visit with the club on Monday: “Zach had a good visit and we’re talking to the team, and we’ll keep the dialogue going. There are some other people in the mix as well, other clubs, but he had a great visit. There are a lot of things about it that make sense.”

On WR Jabar Gaffney and a potential contract extension: “We’re just going to continue to talk. I don’t want to characterize our discussions.”

On WR Donte’ Stallworth and if he might return with a new contract -- with the Patriots not expected to pick up his $8 million in bonuses: “Like Jabar, I’d say we’re in discussions.”

I wouldn't call it surprising. I would imagine every Patriots free agent could use the same words to describe their status. If he said they were in serious discussions and close to a new deal, then it would be surprising.

Thanks for the info, and you've got a typo in the topic line (Stallwork).

But Donte is not a FA, it is widely believed that the Pats would simply not pick up his option and move on. But maybe that won't be the case.

Makes sense...why is it surprising? I think it is obvious they like Stallworth and having him on teh other side with Moss makes sense; not at the price he was at, but within reason. Gaffney is fine as well as number 4. ChadJ? He will be the 5th and maybe move up some if there are injuries....but that is with 3 signings..best scenario.

I like it, I hope Stallworth is back next year.

Nearly every story I've read on Stallworth has indicated the Pats have no intention of picking up his option but would welcome him back at a reduced rate.

The way Reiss frames the posting in his blog it sounds like that is the exact question he asked Rosenhaus. I would be stunned if he would say anything different than what he said. Why as an agent do you tell other teams the Patriots are off the table as an option?

i'd love Donte` back really. its just his cap is too much for a 3rd option @ best on this team...not his fault though. With Moss and Welker being so good. Gaffney got the reps in the end as well

Drew Rosenhaus always keeps it real and calls it like it is. If there were no discussions he would simply say so. There are a lot of teams with lots of cap space out there this year, which is what he said on NFL Live yesterday, so there would be no need to say they are in talks if they weren't. In the same interview yesterday he said that there are problems in Cinci with Chad Johnson, he didn't say everything was ok.

Re: Zach Thomas, Gaffney and Stallwork updates per Reiss

Keeping the pieces that scored more points than any other team in history seems like a good thing to me.

I don't think it's so much his rate, though that is high as well, as the fact that he'd cost 11 mil in bonuses this year. It's all amortized very nicely, etc., but he did not display -- and was not able to display -- number 1 capabilities.

I don't think Donte goes for the restructure, honestly, and the Pats will end up casting him adrift. If not, though, it's pretty enticing. When Randy gives out, who knows what level Donte will be playing at? Certainly he'll be a seasoned deep threat. We were ready to go with him in 07 until the Moss deal happened... you've gotta figure we like him in '10, if we keep him around that long.

Like I said, I think he's gone... but who knows :)

would love to see stalworth and gaffney come back

I'm expecting Zach to sign here. Stallworth will use us as a fallback and Gaffney I'm expecting to be here because he really has little market value.

Best part of column is Dom Capers pick up

We should see immediate improvement in defense across the board.....

Rosenhaus gave up nothing just platitudes yada yada

Despite his lack of consistant production this season, I really like Donte. He seems to have a great additude and a guy you want to have on your team. As I suggested earlier, I think he stays.

I disagree. Chad Jackson will be an upgrade. Stallworth fell off the face of the Earth the second half of the season and was eclipsed by Gaffney on the depth chart.

Gaffney has been awsome for the Patriots. I hope he comes back

I agree with you.....I love Stallworth on this team....and expect that if he does return and gets more comfortable with the offense....that he will be HUGE next year.......Bring back Donte BB!!!!

You'd have to be nuts to not want Donte back for the right price. Offense would easily be set. I'd give alotta props to him if he does indeed come back. He's talented, and he had damn good yardage for being stuck behind Moss and Welker. That said, I seriously doubt he returns.

I think Gaffney will be back, Thomas sounds like whatever. It could mean they're close, it could just be the company line. We'll see, but these were really nothing but cliches unfortunately.

I'm with BM2344 on this one - I really liked Stallworth but the playing time he got (or didn't get) after the Indy game was startling and telling. I don't think there's any chance he comes back.
