Trade w/ Minn

I'd be on-board, IF Winfield was willing to re-structure. I'm pretty sure he has a bloated salary. He's definitely starter material, and I'd take the trade down in picks.
This is what he has left :

2008: $5.6 million
2009: $6 million
2010: Free Agent

Not cheap but not bad. Certainly cheaper than Samuel.

Then mark me down as Yes. I would do this trade.

I'd like that for the Pats as well. The Pats supposedly wanted Winfield back when he originally signed with the Vikings.

Though, I'd insist on Winfield signing an extension that would add 4 years to his current contract while lightening the cap hit for the 1st 2 years.

#17 is about where most of us expected the SF pick to be originally. Getting the rights to Winfield as a bonus for SF's "effort" works for me. #17 is also a pretty good spot for the first round group of CB. We wouldn't be locked into that, of course, but Winfield, Hobbs, #1 pick at CB would be an uphrade over last year IMO.

He is one of my favorite non-patriots in the league. Only knock on him I have is that is he is only 5-9(so am I lol). This guy can however lay the lumber with the best of them. Had 106 tackles(79 solo) in his third full season. I would love to trade down and get him with a restructure as stated in one of the above posts. We could then draft a guy like Quentin Groves who is gonna run around a 4.43 at the combine at 6-3 250. If he runs a 4.4 at the combine at that size watch him rocket into the first round for sure, I like him in our system as that speed rushing OLB/DE we need. may be a stretch to take at the Vikings 14 but I would still take it as my hopes for the draft are Gholston and a second round corner because the CB class is deep as hell. Or Mcfadden falls to us and we trade to Dallas for their two first rounders and take one of the first round corners like Rogers-Cromartie and Groves.

That's a pretty significant drop from 7th. The question... is Winfield worth a mid 1st round pick? Cuz that's what it would take in addition to the 17th pick to ordinarily move that high.

True, but it also all depends on what the Patriots are looking to do with the pick. Say for example they wanted to draft a corner anyways (not out of the realm of possibility), even if the top corner isn't around at 17, it's pretty likely one of the top 2 or 3 guys will be. Since most of us agree that there's no clear #1 corner in the draft, picking one at #17 probably isn't going to make a huge difference from taking one at #7 (save for the financial windfall).

Plus, you get a starting caliber corner to pair with Hobbs and help ease the transition if you draft a corner (even Cromartie was the nickel in his first year).

I'm on board.

The problem with Groves has been his consistency. Groves was highly touted going into the start of this year and has really fallen hard. Prior to the start of this season, he was supposedly a top 10 pick. Now, he's being talked about as a late 2nd rounder possibly a 3rd rounder. Not sure that he'll move back up into the 1st round, regardless of what he does at the combine.

I realize that he has been inconsistent and that is one of the biggest things BB looks for in his linebackers but his inconsistency was due to a foot injury that hampered him all year. If thats not the case please let me know:)

You don't go from being touted as a top 10 pick to potentially a 3rd rounder if its only a foot injury that hampered you and that you played through. He's got some off-field issues and supposedly some attitude issues as well.

There are rumors that he is pulling a Lance Briggs in that he doesn't want to play in a 3-4 alignment. Also that he doesn't want to move to OLB. But only time will tell if those rumors are true.

The only way I make that trade is if Winfield agrees to an extension/restructuring, and we pry another draft pick - no later than their 4th-rounder - from Minnesota.

I'm still pissed at Arizona that we're not 3rd overall.

Dude, where did you read about these "issues". I have not heard anything like this.

I don't think a Winfield trade is a rumor of any sorts, just specualtion by the author of that site of a trade that might make sense. I suggested a Winfield deal in a thread here about a week ago.

According to the trade value chart, the no. 7 overall is worth 1,500pts while the no. 17 overall is worth 950 pts. A fair trade, (in my mind) would be the no.7 overall (1500) pts to the Vikings for the no. 17 overall (950pts), no .83 overall (175pts), and Antoine Winfield. This trade would then essentially assign a value of 375 pts to Antoine Winfield. That is equivalent to about the 52nd or 53rd pick in the draft.

Maybe a little much to give up for Winfield? Yes, but I don't think the 7 has quite the value it would in a normal year.

This trade works well for both sides considering the Vikings have two 3rd round picks this year.

The Pats would then have three 3rd round picks and the ability to come away with 5 guys in the first 3 rounds. Another option would be to use those extra 3rds to move up in either the 1st or 2nd round for a targeted player.
