Re: Deadline to use the franchise tag is 4pm tomorrow

It would be rude to tag Moss ... he came here for a discount.
Slapping the tag on him would be the wrong message to future
veterans willing to come here for a year on the cheap.

I don't think the Patriots worry about whether they are being rude to players. I do, however, think that Moss will get from the Patriots as good a deal as he is going to get anywhere. Randy's "Patriots-value" is higher than his "Market-value." If I were another team's GM, I'd worry which Moss is going to show up, the 2007 Moss or the 2006 Moss. The Patriots know who's going to show up as long as TB is QB.

Re: Deadline to use the franchise tag is 4pm tomorrow

Moss is the second most valuble player on the pats really.

Sounds like an opinion and unless you have some actual evidence than your opinion really doesn't matter. :D:D:D

There might be evidence he is one of the most valueble but I think second most might be an overstatement. I would argue that Wilfork is more important to the Patriots than Moss. Than kind of talent on the deline makes the defense work properly. While Moss made the offense work more easily it is Brady who makes it work properly.

Evidence? How's 23 TD catches for evidence? Other than Brady, who was more instrumental to the Pats' success than Moss last year?... Welker? Asante? Faulk? Colvin? Wilfork? Moss had a far greater impact than any of them.

Its a risky game to play if you let him test the waters. A good, almost great, team like Jacksonville has an accurate & mobile QB to get him the ball and is in dire need for a game breaking receiver like Moss. Him going to the Jaguars would alter the landscape of the AFC severely.

I completely agree, people really just dont understand the way this guy stretches the field and completely changes the dynamic of an offense. Because his ability is unique only to him, it goes unnoticed by many and its assumed that, like many receivers, he is as good his numbers say he is. As for Vince Wilfork, the guy was great this year so he definetely can make a case for being #2 on the team importance list. But Moss wasnt just great, he was historic in much the same way Brady was only he is a WR and Brady is a QB. And yes, Wilfork is the key to the defense while Moss isnt the key to the offense (Brady is) BUT, the offense was arguably the greatest unit in nfl historu(largely due to Moss) while the defense was arguably not a top 5 unit THIS year.

Yeah, I'd agree that the 3 most important Patriots right now are, in order:

1. Brady
2. Moss
3. Wilfork

We all heard Brady bf the SB saying that he and Moss are a package deal. Where Moss goes, Brady goes....this says that TB would never be the same if we let Moss walk and neither would anyone in New England. I dont think the Pats organization is stupid, therefore, I cant imagine why theyd ever let Moss go. Moss will be a Patriot. Even after the SB, in his press conference he said...WE'LL be back next season. I think you guys who think Moss is gonna walk and the Pats are gonna let him...may be thinking too into it. Lol..I think Moss already knows hes gonna be a Patriot as well.

They could well have a gentlemens' agreement by now, tag then get the deal done. Though in most cases the tag is perceived as a universal Bad Thing, you have a guy who wants to be here, a team that wants him here, and the element of the market.

If in reality, Moss really does want gigantic money this year, the tag is appropriate. I think more likely, he wants decent money and security, to the tune of (say,) a five-year deal. While they iron out how much of his money is up-front -- basically weighing the risks of the aging process -- it might be just fine by both parties to have him off the market.

The Moss negotiation is unlike most, because it is for keeps. The goal will be to grab him and keep him here the rest of his career. This FA period is more like an engagement, not house rules for shacking up: i.e., an unusual situation for this league.

Now, if you see him tagged at the start of the season (i.e., instead of just to buy time to get the numbers worked out,) that would be something to worry about. I am hoping that both sides understand 23 TDs isn't happening again (nor, really, should it.) But top-of-the-league productivity? Yeah, definitely that can happen. Especially if you add in a bunch of incentives, along with a nice chunk up front.

Eh, we'll see.

Randy wouldn't be "off the market" anyway unless they use the exclusive tag. Players who are tagged otherwise can talk to anyone, just can't be signed without compensation to their current team being agreed to.

When the Colts and Manning couldn't get a deal done in 2004, he was tagged with the exclusive tag so no one could even glance at him. They did get his deal done about a week into FA.

I agree that Moss is not a player you tag unless you are pretty sure you know what range he wants and it's something you're comfortable with. Tag to play or tag and trade could get ugly with that player. Use of the tag here could be something both sides are amenable to only because due to the silly provision in the CBA that deals with revisiting contracts more than one a year, his apparently could not be extended and therefore has to be signed after FA and a new league year commences. But Randy may also want to be free to test his market to establish his value before deciding to grant a discount.

Jason Cole was on with Felger today and he said while he hadn't talked to any agents at the combine yet, he believes Randy will garner top offers if he gets to FA simply because GM's will believe he can score 20 TD's for them, although the length of the deals will likely not exceed 3-4 years and the bonus or guaranteed money IHO would be in the $10-12M range.

get moss a long term deal, and use the tag on someone else, someone on D

The Colts tagged Dallas Clark yesterday or the day before, then I just saw a ticker on ESPN that said they agreed to a 6 yr deal.

Ummm . . . there really isn't anyone else worth tagging (unless you want to pay, say, Randall Gay $8M for 2008).

And, BTW, I honestly think that Moss would have to be an idiot to go anywhere else (after all, the grass is not greener anywhere else).

Jax? Tons of money, balanced offense, solid, accurate qb.
SD? Money, talent out the ying-yang, but the qb's a homo.

And with both those teams--who's going to keep Moss in line, and make sure he's able to keep his mind on football first and foremost? Or, to phrase it differently, do you think the Jaguars or the Chargers have Kool-Aid nearly as potent as Patriot Kool-Aid? :)

I don't think anyone has a locker room like the Pats.
The Chargers would be polar opposite judging by the way things play out in the media, and the way their players are allowed to act.

Cali has some pretty green grass and if Moss is looking for green grass he might find it better there.:D

Oh wait you meant hypotheticly

Nothing keeps Moss in line better than winning..and he's grown up a lot, I think people are exaggerating his "clubhouse cancer" potential should he leave the Pats.

Moss won't be going anywhere....I say this due to ESPN radio before the Superbowl. They interviewed Randy when I was on my way to pick up a friend, Moss said, (Something like this) "If Mr. Kraft is listening, i won't break the bank to stay with the Patriots, but to all other teams listening..I will break your bank"

He wants to stay in N.E. and will do so cheaper than he would for any other team....Brady to Moss till the end of thier career's! :rocker:

Re: Deadline to use the franchise tag is 4pm tomorrow

Not if putting the tag on him pi$$es him off. Can you say Asante Samuel?

I agree with you. They could still re-sign him to a long term contract

after February 29th or before July 15th.

Re: Deadline to use the franchise tag is 4pm tomorrow

It's not being a malcontent. It is business. Moss will simply tell the patriots where they can put the tag.

Put me in the camp that says you franchise him and then go from there. I really don't see Randy going from model citizen back to malcontent in one year based solely on that. I'd still like them to get a longterm deal worked out, but my first priority is assuring that he's on the Patriots in 2008.

You can all decide that Moss is an idiot to want to play elsewhere. Somehow, I think being on Green Bay Super Bowl team right about now might have felt OK to him.
