Some of you guys are not getting it. The Pats need to get younger on defense. What's the point of signing another old guy when the Pats have Bruschi and Seau? If the Pats continue to sign these old castoffs that some people suggest then you can bet that next season will end exactly like the previous two (with the defense gassed and can't come up with a stop at the end).

Why can't they bring in vets who are experienced, and bring in some draftee's as well? Signing someone like Zach Thomas wouldn't mean they couldn't also draft Jonathan Goff or another LB.

Pace is a little bit of a 'tweener *6-4 272*. He is a tad small for DE and he doesn't have that quick-twitch athleticism for LB. Seems a little stiff in the hips.

Are you are envisioning a Willie Mac type role for him?

I'm with you brother. I'd like to see them draft Ghoslton or Rivers at OLB. Move Vrabel inside with AD. and move those two at OLB on obvious passing downs.

Groom a young guy at OLB.

Rivers wouldn't play OLB for NE. He'd be an ILB with coverage duty. Vrabel doesn't like playing ILB, and that's how he injured his back a few years ago.

Most definitely. I don't think he gets a top ten grade from the Pats, though. I think I've fallen for Gholston; he'd be great.

That's the thing, I thought fans wanted to get faster/more athletic at LB? Pace isn't faster or more athletic than either Colvin or AD. Maybe he could rotate with Vrabel, but NE could draft a rookie to rotate with Vrabel. He is interesting, but considering his ability (and limitations) I wouldn't pay him top dollar to play OLB in NE's 3-4. If you want to get faster and more athletic at LB there is going to be a guy named Groves sitting at the backend of round one or the top of round two. At 6'3" 250lbs he runs a 4.43 forty, and notched 26 QB hurries in 2007, while playing through dislocated toes. He's also a team leader, plays with an attitude, has great pursuit, and a non stop motor.

Maybe you are the one who doesn't get it. The Pats DON'T have Bruschi and Seau. They are BOTH FAs currently.

Also, 33 is YOUNG compared to Seau.

And, finally, you're talking out your arse if you think that the age of the LBers was why the Pats lost the SB.

The Defense wasn't gassed in the SB. Fact is that the offense left too much time on the clock. Not to mention that the defense SHOULD have had the stop on 2 different occasions. One Samuel blew by not making the interception. The other the Refs blew by not calling Manning down when he was clearly wrapped up.

Move him inside. What's the deal with Seau then? He plays inside. Whose to say it will short his career? His pass rushing abilities slowed down in the last third of the season

They didn't slow down. Teams were doubling up on him and taking him out of the play. With Colvin on the other side, teams were doubling Colvin and Green.

What I find HILARIOUS about all the talk about the defense being "old" the two OLDEST LBers were able to play ALL SEASON. Whereas, Colvin, who is the youngest, wasn't.

No, he isn't. He's said so himself.

If Vrabel moves inside, he'll have to play the WILB spot. And he's not nearly as adept in coverage as Bruschi was.

I think Smith could be an interesting pickup for depth. His run coverage is solid. I don't know much about his coverage ability however.

A guy I want playing WILB for us next year is Keith Brooking.

I don't think the Falcons have released him yet, right? Maybe that was just a rumor, as they already released a bunch of guys, and you'd think Brooking would have been among them.

Over on KFFL a niner fan posted LOW lights of Smith. Fair to say, I don't want the guy. He sucks, not one good thing has been said about him, seriously not one. I wouldn't touch the guy unless we wanted Month Beisel 2.0

He hasn't been released yet, which really does piss me off. It's only in his best interest to get out of ATL, IMO.

Honestly, he'd probably sign with the Saints anyways. The guy's never left the south, and from what I understand he intends to spend the remainder of his days in the south.

Not me. I'm satisfied getting Thomas and keeping Vrabel and Colvin on the edge. Brooking isn't what he used to be either.

That may be true, but I'll give him some of the benefit of the doubt because he played for the Falcons. We thought Moss wasn't the same type of impact player but it turns out he was a result of playing for Oakland.
