Any comments Michigan Dave?
This guy is currently projected in the 3rd round.
What say the Pats pick up Crable and Goff, then call it a day? :)
I'm not even going to get into pick 7 right, now just want to discuss this guy and how he could potentially fit. The size and speed are definitely there.
Now can he play?

Perfect ssize, but those highlights show nothing.

michigan is the one team i actually watch sometimes, and i always liked crable
i never felt like he really stood out in any area of his game, but he seemed to be solid in all, and he had a knack for the big play

I know. I wish there was more out on this guy. Very little info, that's why I'm asking if anyone has seen him play and has an opinion.

He reminds me of a former Pat. Lawrence McGrew. High cut. Looks like he has a body suited for olb in 4-3. Not sure enough meat on bones to be a 3-4 lb in our system. But, McGrew was built the same way. And, we ran a 3-4 back in those days. He turned out to be a heckuva player. I like P.Wheeler -ILB - Ga Tech. They have him at 6'2" 245lb. Would love to get him at 68. Pick from Oakland.

I actually like this guy a lot. He plays the run fairly well and he can get after the QB a little. He's not the best in coverage, but he's better than a lot of others. I like his instincts, very few false steps.
IF he runs a legitimate 4.6 and he projects to keep that speed while packing on and addition 20 pounds of muscle, then I think he should have BB's attention.

If the reports of BB being interested in Bradley of Nebraska last year are correct, then BB should be looking at Crable this year.

If we traded down 5 to 10 spots in the first round and picked up an additional second rounder and still got Goff and Crable in the third round, my draft day would be complete.

Last year when David Harris was finishing up his time at Michigan, Crable was considered to be a better player than Harris at that time.

Third or fourth round pick sounds about right like to let him compete.

Oh, he's a player. Good pass rusher, exc vs the run (2nd in the country in tackles for losses). Extremely mobile -- stronger than he looks. Solid ST player. At this time, my only doubts are his coverage skills, and the all-important intangibles.

Here's an old article I've saved:

Energetic player a force for University of Michigan

Wow, nice read. Thanks. I like the fact that this guys sounds like a leader who plays with fiery passion. That might be just the kind of player the Pats need at MLB. And goodness knows Junior and Tedy aren't getting any younger.

By those who like flash and the occasional big play over steady consistency. Crable is a free-lancer, very much in the Lavar Arrington mold, without the freakish athleticism and violence Arrington had. He overpersues frequently, and is lost in coverage.

All that being said, he's a good football player. Junior Seau was always a freelance linebacker until Belichick got him, so hopefully it can be coached out of Crable. I just wouldn't spend a first day pick on him.

Crables best comparison in the NFL ive heard time and time again is Shaun Phillips.

He seems a lot lighter than Phillips and those chicken legs scare me. A lot of knee exposed on a chicken leg.

I've watched all of his games. The best adjetive I can think of is "mercurial". He has the speed and size of a first round pick (it wouldn't surprise me if he goes under 4.6 and he has the frame to add more pounds) but has been plagued by bad decisions at times.

The reasons I DON'T like him for the Pats:

-Occasional lack of discipline: He had an incredible knack for getting unnecessary roughness or late hit penalties as the WORST times (see vs. Troy Smith in 06). Granted, some of them were questionable, but as a senior you should damn well know better.

-Not proven in coverage: Although he certainly has the speed to become a decent cover lb, I cannot remember him ever making a play in coverage. This was partly due to UM playing a 3-3-5 nickel package on passing downs with Crable usually either as a rush DE or stand-up DT (he almost always was blitzed). Nonetheless, the bottom line is he is not proven in this area.

-Chicken legs i.e. Point of Attack: Yes. He has them and boy are they skinny. What worries me here is how this will affect him in setting the edge vs. the run (VERY important for Pats lb's). The guy can add more pounds easily (he's got the frame) and he is strong and heavier than he looks, but I don't feel comfortable with his setting the edge. He is a backfield terror but had an amount of over-pursuit cases.

The reasons I like him are:
-SPEED: The guy is fast as hell. It would not surprise me to see him run under 4.6. If he doesn't, take my word that the guy has great game speed. He is FAST.
-Size: He has the frame to easily add more pounds.
-Versatility: My favorite part. He was always moved all over. He's played SAM in a 4-3, DE in a 3-3, OLB in a 3-3, and even stand up DT. That's what would probably make him attractive to the Pats.
-Blitzing: The guy was a heck of a blitzer at UM. He did it well be it speed rushing outside or blitzing inside, and he hits HARD (see Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn after Crable hits). However, he never was a particularly consistent bull rusher, instead using his speed more than his strength (which, despite his chicken legs, he does have). This might haunt him in the NFL.
-Knack for getting into the backfield: IF he correctly diagnoses a play, he is like a missile (albeit not always a laser guided one), and will make lots of tackles in the backfield.
-Hustle and heart: He was defensive captain and he matured a LOT his last season. As many dumb decisions he made every now and then, he didn't take plays off and as HORRIBLE last season was for UM, I give him credit for not laying down after the App. State and Oregon embarrassments and helping to salvage a decent season. That takes heart but it still doesn't excuse the eggs the defense laid some times.

The play that best sums up Crable to me was against Michigan State last season. Crable had Javon Ringer (a VERY fast back) dead to rights for a TFL in the backfield but overpursued and whiffed on the tackle. Ringer than spectacularly reversed field and took off for the end zone. Crable got up and ran across the field a la Ben Watson and tackled Ringer before he got in the end zone, showcasing INCREDIBLE speed for a lb and excellent hustle. So, in one play he showed his speed, his athleticism, and his hustle albeit unnecessarily since he should've made the tackle.

In summary, we take him at our risk. There's upside and downside. BB and Pioli will know.

PS David Harris and Woodley were MUCH better. Also, as much as it pains me, I'd rather have Gholston ;)

Well Gholston projects to top 10 pick atm whereas Crable is a 3rd rounder imo. So you do get what you pay for, don't you? :p Interesting description though, thank you. So he has big time athleticism but some warts as well? Sounds like maybe a decent gamle in the 3rd round. How does Goff compare?

Update. Crable ran an official 4.64 40 at the combine.
Now that's some nice athleticism!
Question, does he project to ILB for the Pats or more of an OLB?
A 4.64 for an ILB with his size would be sick.

Crable and Goff are two different types of players. Also, Crable has thin legs, and he's pretty high cut. I do think he's an option in the third round, but I'd take Goff over him in a heartbeat, and I don't think he'll [Goff] last into the third round. The guy had major production in the SEC, and put up some of the best numbers (in multiple areas/drills) out of all the ILB, and OLB's at the combine. He also came in at 6'2" 245lbs, so he has very good size for the position, and his frame could still carry at least another five pounds. If he played for a program like Ohio State instead of Vandy I bet you'd hear a lot more about him, too.

I'm a big Michigan fan - and like the Crable pick. He was by far the best player of their defense. I did notice he was playing <out of position> as a DE for the first half of the year - but that's probably due to teams spreading out their defense. His flamingo legs (chicken legs, but long) was probably a huge turn off to a lot of teams. He'll start out on special team and maybe a rush LB during obvious passing situations.
When you look at Crable, he's really long and skinny (I was amazed he actually weighed 240) but put him on the field and he'll make plays.
