Schefter: Pats made offer to Zach Thomas on Monday [mergedx2]

Re: Schefter: Pats made offer to Zach Thomas on Monday

The Pats and Cowboys are obviously the favorites and I'm sure Rosenhaus advised Zach that even though he more than likely wanted to accept the Pats offer, that it would be in his best interest to atleast finish what he intended to do and honor those already scheduled visits. When all the offers come in it will come down to his homestate (Cowboys) or the Pats both of whom have legitimate SB hopes next season which as he stated is what he's looking for.

The key statement is sentence #2 from Schefter in bold.

"The Patriots offered a contract to former Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas on Monday, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

Thomas and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, visited New England on Monday and will continue negotiations with the team. Thomas is scheduled to visit with the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday."

If he visits other teams after an offer from the Pats, he probably won't be accepting it.

Didn't AD, Washington, and Stallworth all visit with other teams last offseason?

I know his visiting other teams increases the odds of his signing elsewhere (duh), but that doesn't mean he's not going to end up signing with NE when all is said and done. I also wouldn't say it means NE's offer wasn't good enough, just that he's keeping his scheduled visits.

no AD came here and signed here right away. Said he wasnt looking for the highest money..if it was right, hes taking it

Did he cancel his initial visit with the 49ers? I can't remember now. I remember some 49ers writer saying something like "Thomas is supposed to visit with the 49ers today", but I can't remember if he made that visit. I thought he made one visit with the 49ers, and quickly decided he wanted to sign with NE directly after that visit? Maybe it was right after his Pats visit, and only hours before that scheduled 49ers visit? Can't remember.... I know Washington and Stallworth both visited with multiple teams though. I also know the 49ers were willing to pay AD more than NE.

Edit: I think I know why I got confused/couldn't remember the situation. AD was given an offer by the 49ers that was more than NE's offer. He turned that offer down because NE seemed like the better fit for him, and he wanted to stay on the east coast. So, even if he didn't visit with the 49ers he still turned down a better offer to sign with NE.

I think there's at least an 80% chance he comes here. Dallas has already said they don't really want to spend the $$$ and why would he want the Texans, Jets or Bills ... be serious... what free agent wants to play for Mangina the rat?

I do question how much Thomas is really worth at this point in his career.

I've no doubt someone would overpay for him - but I don't think even then we're talking about anything close to taxing a team that has average cap room.

I guess in some respects that makes me feel better, in that the Patriots could "overpay" him but relatively speaking they'd still not be sinking significant cap space into him.

In other words, this ain't the Adalius Thomas money we're talking about - its Zach Thomas.

Re: Schefter: Pats made offer to Zach Thomas on Monday

Thomas is too old. Also, where would he fit in with Seau and Bruschi? They would make up the three oldest LB's in the league. I just don't see it happening. The Saints need Thomas more than New England. And why would Dallas want him? They are loaded at LB. I think the Colts would be a good fit for him.

Technically if Thomas signs here our depth chart is Z. Thomas and E Alexander, 1 and 2 respectively.

The key above is your conjunction -- my guess is it is "or" not "and."

If it is "or" than obviously Thomas makes a ton more sense when you are rotating him with one of Seau or Bruschi.

No. It would be Colvin-Adalius-Thomas-Vrabel.

Re: Patriots offer Zach Thomas contract

The article mentions the Cowboys and Saints and the cowboys aren't going to offer him much ... Zach will be a Patriot before months end. :D:D:D

Thomas deal tonight unlikely
Posted by John Tomase at 9:21 pm

A source close to former Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas confirmed that he received a contract offer from the Patriots tonight, but added that he didn’t think a deal would get done in time to keep Thomas from making his next scheduled free agent visit tomorrow in New Orleans.

It’s worth noting that the Patriots have an excellent track record when it comes to locking down the free agents they want. Rodney Harrison came in on a red-eye from Oakland before the 2003 season and canceled the rest of his visits after hearing the Patriots’ pitch.

I fixed your post for you. :)

Re: Schefter: Pats made offer to Zach Thomas on Monday [merged]

I wish I could figure out what Belichick is thinking when it comes to moves like this. This guy obliviously doesn't fit the normal measureables for his system. Is he a big nickel guy? Are we looking to add a 4-3 mike? Are we pinching in the ends / 1 gapping the front, and we want a ballhawk at ILB, not a guard-basher? A damn-the-scheme-this-guy-is-a-player guy?

If I had to guess, I'd say we're looking to change up the normal scheme to create more pressure up the middle. Either 1-gapping with Seau, Zach, and Adalius, or going to a 4-3 more often.

I can't figure how he's a good fit for our system. Taking on guards and shedding blocks, etc., at his size/age...?

But what do I know.

Fixed very nicely.

The hack also didn't mention that Thomas has the same agent as Stallworth who left NE, visited with others then signed here.

He is thinking I have a role for Zach that will help this team.

Everyone keeps saying he doesn't fit our system. While he may not be the perfect fit I don't see this as a problem because most likely he will not be the starter. IMO you need 4 guys that fit the system and Vrabel, Colvin, Bru, and Thomas have all proven they fit very nicely. Everyone else can fill in even if they don't fit perfectly but more important you get a more specific role out of everyone else.

What Zach's role would be I am not sure. I remember as being a good sideline to sideline run stopper, which is not someting he will be doing here. I imangine that is why everyone says he is a poor fit. But just cause that is what he did in the 4-3 doesn't mean you can't find a suitable role for him. take a look a Seau no one though he would fit in here saying he was to much of a freelancer.
