Richard Seymour has not been the same player since hurting his MCL in
2005 playing fullback.

I tivo all of the Pats games and re-watch them to key on various plays
and players performances.

Seymour was never a stat guy, but he did create havoc for offensive
lineman.

He is no longer the dominant player of 2002, 2003, & 2004.

He made the pro-bowl in 2006, but I feel it was based on past reputation than play on the field.

He is signed through 2009.

If his play does not improve, will the Pats give him another contact?
He is not the "take less to play for the Pats" type of guy.

History would let me believe that Pioli and Belichick may try to move
Seymour, but then again he is a Belichick favorite.

I think he needs the Jr. Seau workout

He has become slower than Brady and that's pretty bad.

Seymour showe some good quickness in the playoffs, making a hit, then turning around to tip the pass.

I don't think he was putting all his weight on the knee though.

Certainly another year should make a lot of difference. Hope it's not a chronic problem.

I've been wondering what the FO/staff is considering doing with him as well.

It strikes me as a situation somewhat similar to Dwight Freeney.
Great player who eats up a good chunk of $$$, but can't usually play a full season.

Iirc, Freeney eats up more $$$, and misses more games, however it also seems like he can go full tilt more in the games that he does play.

Maybe I'm completely crazy, and I'm sure some will think so, but I wonder if Big Sey is going to be worth the $$$ for the next 2-3 years

I would say the best answer would probably be to revisit this next year. He has had lots of medical problems and bad decisions with this injury and he was still feeling the effects this year. He know has a full offseason to heal it even more but most important he has a full offseason to strengthin it and work on areas that he may have neglected to lack of mobility in his leg.

If he does not bounce back next year with a monster season than I think he will have to take less than top dlinemen money to stay. You would still have a year left to negotiate this and he may be more than willing to talk because players don't like being on a one year deal.

Love the guy and what he brings to the team when healthy....but imo he was the worst signing in recent memory. Jarvis Green was a more than adequete replacement at a fraction of the cost. Green,Warren and Wilfork were more than good enough to hold the fort.

I agree that next year will be a make or break year for Seymour. Plenty of time to get in shape. work on regaining what he's been missing, and give it a good run.

He is only 28 what is wrong here. He played hurt all of last season. He has a hugh brace and was taking a beating.

He has improved and also mind this ,, in our system a DE play is make the OLB make plays.
AD came up real strong in the playoff and yet the DE who does his job has to be dealt with .

if he leave the jets and parcel are going to love him

Q: Will Seymour ever be 100% again?

A: Sure, just as soon as his contract is set to expire. Just a coincidence, right?

If he does not have a Pro Bowl-caliber season in '08, or is not willing to play for significantly less in 2010 and beyond, then the FO should release him before the '09 season. The savings could be much better spent elsewhere.

Your still giving excuses for Seymour's dissapointing seasons since 2005 because of his leg injury?

Please don't be naive or too homerish to not believe that Seymour got his contract that he wanted which included big dollars and now his intensity level has gone downhill - He is not the same player and the sporadic injuries over 3 years is just an excuse,IMO he really is not that great of a DL anymore - these pre-2004 days appear to be over.

Face it - Seymours leg is most likely in decent shape now in 3 years during the games that he actually was healthy enough to play in - IMO He is just overated anymore and even Jarvis Green is better at the position,How many sacks or major pressure or tackles/assists has Seymour gotten when he was playing and not on the injured list in the past 3 years?,I am sure you will find those stats amazingly bad.

When Seymours contract expires in a few years unless he takes a pay cut then no way is he still here beyond that.

Stop using injury excuses please,If Seymour was not good enough 'health wise' to be on the field BB would not have put him out there just for the sake of it.

Besides he is making a boatload of money and not producing when he IS playing,Excuses for one of the highest paid players in the NFL is simply ridiculous.

The injury was not a sporadic injury.....He hurt his leg as a Full back in 05 and he had the same injury ever since. He played on it for a year or two and had surgery which did not go as planned.

His return from the pup this year hopefully is the end of that ordeal for him and Now he has a full off season to fully strengthen the leg and to get everything else back into to peak form.

BB did not put a hurtin seymour out there just for the sake of it he did it because Seymour at 75% is still better than most.

The next time I see Seymour dominate during a season like he used to and like he is getting paid for I will apologize for my post above But you know what,I think those dominating days are over.

Are we going to use excuses on his leg till he retires?,All I know is he is paid alot of money and not as he once was - Sure the injury has had some effect but really can you mention ANY games in which he has been a BIG factor since SB 39?

I may be of the minority in the land of 'No Patriots player can do wrong' forum but its still how I see it.

You don't need to apoligize for your opinion just get the facts right.

Saying sparadic injuries is just not accurate he has been battleing the same one for a few years. Saying sparadic makes it seem like he was hurt for one game two or three times the last few years. Not the entire time with same injury as was the case.

Bottom line though is you are right he is getting paid to much for his lack of Production (even if due to injury). But seeing as this is his first healthy offseason in a while I think this discussion should be put on hold till next year. Lets give him the benifit of the doubt since he is one of the most dominating de line men to ever dawn a Pats uni. If he can back to his best days than it would have been worth overpaying for a few injured seasons.

Agreed.

However, I disagree with a later post. A reduced Seymour is still a pretty good player, who deserves a lot of reps.

Maybe you should suck the ligaments out of your knee so you can better judge the extent of his injury.

By the way, not every player is a pro bowler every year. Tom's missed a few, should we have dropped him?

Threads like these are just so stupid. The guy's been playing with verifiable injuries, finally got operated on and took a while to recover.

What are we going to do, cut him so the Jets can have his prime years and laugh at our stupidity?

News flash, guys at that position get injured. Just because he was a pro bowler out of the box doesn't mean he's going to be one every year.

When he's starting for the Jets, where are you going to find another 3-4 lineman with his combination of size, agility and smarts, Einstein?

OK Homer We will just give him till 2013 to recover from his injury or maybe we will just extend his contract when it expires hoping the injury is not a 10 year one - Are you happy now? The answers get more brilliant every day, must be Super Bowl hangover or chronic naive from birth

It's definitely a risk going either way.
If he bounces back after a full off season to recover and get back to form, then all is forgotten.
If he becomes injury prone, ala Dwight Freeney, then some will have wondered if the money should have been spent elsewhere.

The loss of Colvin, and the slowing down of Vrabel at the end of the season led many of us to look at the d-line play, and maybe overlook the significance of sub par lb play.

You're not using your head. We have a 28 year old player perfect for our defense, not replaceable who has immediately gone from a rookie to one of the top defensive players in the league.

He's played through injuries and is coming off a difficult recovery and missed some games.

Let's cut every all pro in the prime of his career that has an injury.

Brady might never walk without a limp, let's cut him now.

Seriously, read your own post. Imagine Mangini picking up Seymour and us never replacing him.

Why don't you concentrate on positions that need upgrading instead of bashing injured players? It's so easy to be puerile.

Why not use that thing between your shoulders for something other than a hat rack?

I think it's important to remember that, even when you come back from an injury like his, you're still going to be out of shape. Let's give him this offseason work out hard and come back fit, and hopefully that'll be the answer. The same applies for Chad Jackson and Maroney- hopefully the former can break into the rotation and the latter can continue to develop into a legitimately scary RB.

And to everyone who is saying that the Pats should cut him to save money, that's just idiotic. Seymour is the kind of guy that you save money for. He's the perfect end for Belichick's D, and the idea that any of you think that cutting him would be a reasonable solution seriously makes me wonder about you. When a player is PUPed for the first half of the year, and almost put on IR, of course he isn't going to come back at 100%, just like he obviously won't have been 100% before the surgery.
