If they use #7 for a corner then why not pay a little more to keep Asante and keep the pick? Basically using the #7 on a corner will more or less keep the defense at the status quo. I won't see a huge jump for the defense. We'll keep asking when the Pats are going to draft a linebacker in the higher rounds.

I could live with a corner if they trade down and accumulate extra picks.

To use the #7 for an corner straight up will mean huge guaranteed money and contract. I'd rather see that money go to a known commodity.

So my assessment is Asante is gone, so I hope #7 is a linebacker, Jake Long or just trade down.

Please no corner with #7.

That's really insightful. I agree that you don't take a flyer that high in the draft on a position that the Patriots are unwilling to pay for from within the organization.

the only exception is if his name is deion sanders or rod woodson

. . . .or Champ Bailey.

I am hoping that we trade down with the #7 overall pick.

I think there is a chance the Matt Ryan will be available when the
Patriots pick. If Atlanta does not pick Ryan, he may drop.

A team like Chicago or Minnesota may want to move up to jump
in front of #8 Baltimore who would probably pick Ryan.

If for some reason we cannot trade the pick, go get a LT like
Ryan Clady.

We could then move Light to RT and Kaczur to the bench !

Vernon Gholston if not trade the pick it's not that difficult guys gosh.
JK

you say it as if it's a little bit of money it's not it'll proably about a 60 yes i said 60 million dollar diffrence and is a lot of cap room

yes but it's a known commodity versus a potential bust.

that being said... i think they trade down or take a top 5 talent that drops

This is right. However, I agree with you and cant even imagine the Pats taking a corner with the 7th pick. If no one of interest is on the board for the Pats, I would say that theyre most likely to trade down. Probably pick up a corner with the mid first round but then also get the extra picks.

You make great points. But to go farther, if Samuel stays or not, there is no way a corner is taken at #7. I also think that I am the only one on this board that thinks trading the pick is going to be harder than we all think (especially if we assume we are going to get value back).

it's either going to be very hard or very easy. let me explain if a player slips(the longs, mcfadden, ellis you know what i mean) then the phone will be ringing like mad other wise it'll be nearly impossable

I agree. I think it might be a little easier than trading #2.

The key will be if they can trade it for good value.

why would u move a ALL PRO LT to RT and the put a rookie there

Well if the rookie protects like Ogden, you put him there. Best talent needs to protect the QB's blindside. It's pretty simple.

No rookie projects to be Ogden in his first year.

I think the whole time framework of this POV is off. Asante will be signed by some team before the draft...probably soon after March 1. Let's say we offer Samuel a great deal, but somebody offers him more and we lose him.

The draft is six weeks later. Are you saying that we shouldn't draft a cornerback, because we lost Asante? Isn't that a silly argument? Who's going to play corner? What if Gay leaves UFA as well? Saying we should offer the money given to the #7 pick to Asante is fine, but by draft-time, Asante won't be a free agent any more.

I'm saying you could get value by trading down(10-15), but obviously you need a trading partner. I believe Gay will be back. Now if Gay and Asante leave then you are left with bringing back Chad Scott or Eugene Wilson. Obviously you are thin at corner back but do you really want a rookie starting at cb anyways?

I just don't want to see a cb picked at #7. I don't think there is anyone there that warrants value and I think picking one their because of need would be reaching.

Okay, so what you're saying is that regardless of what happens to Asante or Blue, you don't want to take a CB at #1, because none are worth it.

I can see that. Honestly, I'm not sure any player who's on the board is going to be worth the #7 pick. Maybe Matt Ryan to a QB needy team.

exactly.... trade down and pick up a cb cheaper

All the available cornerbacks are said to be a reach at 7. If we can't find a partner to trade down, you draft a player at a position where it's difficult to get quality, e.g., offensive or defensive line.
