The Tampa Tribune looks closer at the Patriots' upcoming moves this offseason and determines that the "Pats aren't going away, a concession 31 NFL teams offer up grudgingly, but unanimously."

Writer Ira Kaufman predicts that Randy Moss will return, while Asante Samuel will likely be playing elsewhere, which "may be a case of buyer beware."

Saying the Patriots "handle free agency and the draft better than anyone else", Kaufman points out that Penn State linebacker Dan Connor and University of South Florida cornerback Mike Jenkins as possible first-round targets.

Bye Bye Asante!

Asante is a gambler who has had a solid front seven ahead of him. The Super Bowl and last years AFCCG are very telling of him...when the big game is on the line, he can't get that game changing play.

He'll be decent, but not worth the money he'll get.

oh so him shuttin Harrison down and taking one to the house doesnt make him a game changing player? thats a bunch of BS

I get the impression that the Pats want to keep him and at a good number for Asante, BUT they won't get into an auction. Asante has his rings so I think he'll go to the highest bidder ,which I don't blame him for, so unfortunately good-bye.

Agreed. If not for Asante, last year's AFCCG would have been ugly. He was pretty much the sole reason we had a lead to squander.

I do generally agree that he's not even close to worth the money he'll end up getting, though.

Actually it's the second time this week I've heard it. KCJoyner had a similar caveat on Asante in his evaluation of FA over on ESPN.

Asante is talented and he has worked at his craft. But he is at least as much the product of a good system as he is rare talent...

That I agree with, when I think of lock down corner I think of somebody that will follow the other teams best WR anywhere on the feild not just sit in one spot. Asante is awesome and Id love to have him back but I wouldnt break the bank with a Clements type deal.

How much do you think the Pats should spend to keep him? 8.5, 9, 10-million a year?

Dropping a gimme interception in the 4th quarter that would have won the super bowl is BS.

isn't that a function of zone versus man defense?

I believe that's what is being intimated by comments like buyer beware...

Nobody is saying he's a piece of crap. Just he isn't a shutdown corner or a player who will elevate an entire defense. He's a zone ballhawk who had double digit picks once in his career, 6 of which came courtesy of 2 guys who aren't presently starting for anyone...

I know the Pats will not break the bank to keep Asante.

I just wish we could keep him because he usually makes big plays in big games (not counting the last SB).

The idea of Hobbs and a rookie CB for next year makes me sick !

I can understand the rookie thing making you sick, but why Hobbs; Plexiglass had a grand total of one catch prior to Hobbs being left on an island with less than a minute to go and got beat on a great fake, 99% of recievers cut inside on an all out blitz to shorten their route and give the QB a quick throw option...........

Bye Bye Samuel .. thanks.

Would the money be better spent trying to get Trufant? or Asonumgha (sp?) I agree with a lot that is being said, big money for top flite corner that should be able to play on both sides of the field. Would Eli throw that ball to plexiglass if Samuel would have been over there?

Asomunga (sp?) is definitely a better CB, and I would take him over Asante without hesitation (he has the height to take down tall corners, and let Hobbs work with the smaller types). Oakland would be crazy not to franchise him, though.

Yeah, that was a great play. And it happened, what, in the first quarter? Where was he the rest of the game?

And this years Super Bowl? I think we remember the could have been INT.
