If a player gets cut from Atlanta, I doubt they'll end up in Foxboro.

Even a durable 5-time Pro Bowler at a need position?

You have to ask if Brooking gets cut, why did a Patriots guy, Dimitroff, release him? Certainly the Falcons need LB's more than we do.

You do have to ask, but there could be a multitude of reasons which would not take him out of consideration for the Pats, for example:

1. cap considerations

2. personality conflict with new coaching staff

3. player is tired of losing atmosphere and needs a change of scenery (see Moss, Randy)

4. etc

One more, maybe he doesn't fit the system they're are going to put in place.

Here are the rumored cuts.

Warrick Dunn, Wayne Gandy, Todd Weiner, Keith Brooking, Lawyer Milloy, are all being speculated as roster casualties.

Here's another option.... OLB Michael Boley, who's 25 years old and had 109 tackles last season, is a RFA.

Wow, Miami and Atlanta want to start from scratch. Almost.

Under which tender? If it's the highest one, wouldn't we have to give up a 1st and 3rd round pick to get him?

That's what I would guess but it would be easier to get rid of a 1st if we traded down from #7 beforehand and had another one to use. We already have a 2nd rounder and two 3rds. Considering how many rookies we kept on the roster this past season, perhaps losing two picks for a RFA wouldn't be that much of a blow.

I've always been a big Dunn fan. If we didn't already have Faulk, I'd be interested in him as 3rd down, change of pace, pass catching RB option.

Brooking would be a perfect signing. Absolutely perfect.

As to why Falcons are releasing him, I'd guess it is cap driven, but I have no idea his number. IIRC though, his last contract was about 4-5 years ago, so I'd think he's getting into bogus years now.

Brooking would be an awsome fit....and From what I remember hearing about him he is really smart and really hard worker....Just recalling a special from a few years back on him.

After being on the falcons he might want to come here where he can win...

he would be a much better option than Morgan, Thomas, or Wilson.

Boley will, almost certainly, be tendered at the highest level. A 1st and 3rd pick. If the Pats hadn't lost their 1st rounder, then I'd say do it in a heart beat.

that gives me a question.

How does it work if you had 2 number ones. Do you give up the lower one in the swap or what?

If he's released, I'd expect Brooking to sign with a southern team. Maybe the Saints?

You give up yours. We don't have ours. Therefore we cannot sign RFAs tendered at the highest or second highest levels (1st+3rd or 1st). At least, that's how I believe it works.

Brooking is a very good linebacker though his overall level of play has declined in recent years. May have something to do with the fact that Atlanta's just not that good of a team. He's the exact kind of guy I can see Belichick bringing in.

That can't be right....So we according to your theory could not use the #7 overall to get a first round tendered player because it is not our 1st rounder. But if we had a first rounder it would be 31, much worse....are you sure the rule is not that your pick would have to be better than the original.

anyone have a better Idea I hate not knowing.

I'm almost positive he's right and it has to be your own pick. IIRC, we used this rule to rook the Redskins on a RFA tender one year.

I think it had to do with a tender on Chad Morton (?). Skins had two picks in the 3rd, their high pick and a lower pick they acquired. They were under impression that they were giving up lower pick in the deal (and I don't think NE did anything to correct said impression).

When all was said and done and the Pats did not match the sheet, Skins had to give up their higher pick.
