I really wish we hadn't agreed not to franchise him... his whole tone and mindset seems to imply that he won't even think twice once a team throws the Franklins his way.... I really wish athletes would grow at least some semblance of loyalty....oh well....

"Yeah, that would be nice if the Colts were in it, but I don't think they have the money," Samuel said with a sly grin. On Samuel's left shoulder are tattooed the words, "Get Rich To This."

"It's about whatever it is you do to get rich," Samuel said. "If you're a writer, that's what you do to get this. If you're a player, whatever it is."

Said Samuel: "If it's time for me to move on from New England, then it's time to move on."

Re: I Thinks Samuel is as Good As Gone....

I think we all knew this a while ago :)

Personally I would have traded him a year ago if we could have gotten something decent for him. But we got him back to try this year and fell a game short. Too bad. His situation is basically the same as Branch's who also said he'd have played his last year had we promised not to Franchise him.

Re: I Thinks Samuel is as Good As Gone....

I've already accepted the fact he'll be gone and no longer consider him a member of this team for the upcoming season.

There is no chance in hell he stays.

I'm in the same boat. He's gone, that's that, and if we improve our pass rush and pay a serviceable replacement a third of what he's going to command, nobody will notice the difference next year anyways.

I think athletes are more loyal than the average person. Lets use say Teddy Bruschi for example. We all know for a fact he could have made more money thru out his career but he was loyal.

Show me an average joe who would have turned down the money he did just to stay with the company that gave them their breaks.

Also I would not be so sold on asante leaving. While I agree it is a long shot he stays there is a chance.
He has said many times how much he likes it here....he also has said how much he likes money and that at this point in his life the money is more important. But I imangine there is a fine line between the money and his liking for this orginization. Meaning if we can offer say 95% of the top offer he may stay here (numbers are arbitrary and who knows how close we would really need to get maybe 99%)
Asante has as much right as anyone to try to get paid as much as they can for their services.....Its called capitolism.

Just imagine the contract Asante would have gotten if he pulled down that pick to end the game. He's still going to get a ton of money, but my god we'd be seeing that highlight 10 times a day.

Of course he has the right; but we also have the right to not like him anymore.

You are correct about the average person but there's a big difference between changing companies to go from $40K to $50K as opposed to getting $80M instead of, say, $55M.

Anyway, he is within his rights to do it and we are within our rights to judge him accordingly.

Re: I Thinks Samuel is as Good As Gone....

the pats survived the loss of Ty law. I'm not going to lose any sleep over Samuel .

Re: I Thinks Samuel is as Good As Gone....

he'll most likely take off, can't begrudge him all that much because - unlike certrain WRs - at least he played out his contract (and the franchise tag). if the Pats can't pay him top dollar then he'll go get it somewhere else, that's just how it is, especially with the young guys just coming off their rookie contracts.

and lets be honest, Assante needs to get as much $$ as he can while he can...I've heard him in a few interviews, he ain't gonna go into broadcasting or found a company that creates cheap clean energy when he's done playing ball

not sure exactly what the difference is.....

at some point enough has to be enough (see Bill Gates) but I am not sure 80 mil when you are not even guarnteed all of it falls into that category.

I mean lets just say he can't spend all of that in his life which i am sure he can so he can leave it for his kids and their kids.

sorry but IMO there is a huge dif between 55 mil and 80

He’d be a fine compliment to Mr. Shannon Sharpe on CBS.

This guy's earning potential will effectively vanish by the time he's 35. Sure, you're well within your rights to stop liking him, but I don't blame him one bit. He has a future to think about, and $25M makes that future a whole hell of a lot more secure. I've never understood how some people thought that, once you pass a certain number (10M?) money just becomes meaningless. Everyone can always use more money. When was the last time you turned down a raise?

He was one of our "wunderlich challenged" players. IIRC he got something like 9 on the test. Not one of our brightest ;)

I have no clue what I'd do in his situation - I'm just saying it's not comparable to you or me getting a raise.

Anyone who gives Asante **** for going after top dollar is a goof. The guy has every right to make as much money as he can. You strive to make the most money you can in every proffesion. Any of you clowns sitting here claiming they would not change jobs if they had the chance to make a monster amount of money is full of it.

Asante will listen to the pats , they will low ball him , and he will move on.

Thats how the pats operate. They wont spend the kind of money Asante will command , and he has every right to get paid.

These guys are all one injury away from no career.

"If it's time for me to move on from New England, then it's time to move on."

With that attitude you'll be rotting somewhere like the Jets, being a nobody week in week out, but it's ok because your getting paid..

Agreed. Sometimes, it can be construed to make more sense, even monetarily, to take a hometown discount:

1) It will extend your career
2) You will make the money back in endorsements as a local hero
3) It will help you get an even bigger contract later

Are any of those the case for Asante? Not if he gets the money that he's asking for. Given that, I don't blame him one iota for wanting to leave.

Sure it is. More money is always more money.

Re: I Thinks Samuel is as Good As Gone....

Well if it makes any of you feel better Merrill Hoge just -when asked who the Pats number 1 priority is for re-singing - chose Asante Samuel over Randy Moss.

And I'm sure the Steelers are still first in his power rankings.

LOL, he said that because he knows Moss is much more likely to come back. In terms of need, he's correct but Moss is a far better WR than Samuel (who I like as a player) is as a CB.
