Shaugnessy's column was totally misleading. based on the results and methodology of the poll, i think it is fair to conclude that more people actually think this was the most devastating loss in Boston history than any other individual game. Here is the letter I sent to him:

Dear Dan,

Did you ever stop to consider that your poll was completely skewed? Considering the relatively narrow margin of victory of the poll, I am quite certain that had you compared the Patriots loss in XLII with INDIVIDUAL Red Sox losses and not lumped every devastating Red Sox loss from the franchise history into one category a different result would have
ensued. The overwhelming odds are that if you had done this then the Patriots loss in XLII would have won far and away as the most devastating loss over other one game Red Sox losses.

In fact I would argue that based on the results of this poll I think it is quite fair to say that XLII was CLEARLY the most devastating loss in Boston sports history because it is unlikely that 80% of the 56% of people who voted for the Sox would have picked one Sox loss over the other. More than likely, the Red Sox vote would have been approximately evenly split between 1978,1986 and 2003 giving each loss around 15-20% by itself with each game clearly being dwarfed by the 44% who voted for the Pats in XLII.

I know all internet polls are unscientific, but for you to conclude that the Patriots loss was not the most devastating based on this poll is deceptive and misleading

The timing of this poll (occuring right after the Pats loss) as well as omitting other devastating losses from other Boston teams also grossly confounds the results, but in my opinion the results clearly suggest that at the time it was taken the Patriots loss was almost certainly the most devastating individual game loss in Boston sports history.

1) Are you seriously arguing over a defeat.
2) Are you trying to say the Pats are 'the best' at defeats?
3) Are you arguing with a total dufess like DS? If so, why?

:bricks:

why do we care what loss was the most devastating ? is that something a fan base of a team is supposed to be proud of?

Watch out. If you sent that email from your work computer, Shank will call your boss...I wish I was kidding...

im a student so he can call no one!!!!!

i dont care except that i think it is irresponsible to mislead people

I'm a huge Pats fan, and I'm no Shaugnessy fan, but I have to agree with him on this one. I wanted 19-0 a lot, I was happy the Pats got to 18-0 and I thought they would beat the Giants.

However, the loss in Game 6 in 86 was the biggest loss in my life, for the simple fact that the game was won. It was in the bag, done, up 3 runs with two outs and no one on. To lose that game was incomprehensible.

Now the Pats game was devastating, but going in and certainly during the game it was apparent to me that they could lose it. Even after they scored to go up 14-10 I knew there was still a very good chance they could lose, based on the way things had gone to that point.

I understand that others may disagree, but to say that the column was "misleading" is a little over the top, in my opinion.

Highschool or college...

Having lived though half a century of the period he was discussing, this Pat's loss was far less devastating on a regional basis in large part because of he 3 Lombardi's already residing in Foxboro. You were likely just too young to appreciate what happened in the olden days...

More young people may agree with you because this is your first stunning defeat. Believe me, those of us old enough to be your parents, have survived worse.

Shaugnessy's column was totally misleading.
And you are surprised. I read that column and actually I agree with the post above - are we really arguing over what defeat is worst? But that column is typical Shaugnessy - he has stated over and over again that baseball is the only sport that really matters to him. So of course he cannot comprehend why others are so upset with the Pats SB loss.

Also - don't forget that he made himself a pretty penny with his "curse" books on the Sox.

Im beyond college and Im 29 so I vividly remember the championship drouight from 1986-2001 as that was a time when I was a major sports fan.

I think you guys are missing the point. The survey was misleading. It compared apples to oranges. Thats what I didnt like about it. EVeryone is entitled to their individual opinion but if you compared individual games versus other individual games the largest single response would have been XLII that was all i was sayuing

I... but if you compared individual games versus other individual games the largest single response would have been XLII that was all i was sayuing

I disagree with this.

I disagree. I was far more pissed off after game 7 in 03 and I know game 6 in 86 caused my Dad not to watch the Sox for about 10 years and jaded him to the point that he was waiting for the other shoe to drop in 04 right up until Foulke underhanded the ball to first.

Reason being that we had both of those game won, they were in the bag, especially game 6 in 86. We played like crap the entire Superbowl and deserved to lose, it's the freshest in our minds so it may seem like the worst, and with the recent success of the Sox it is easy to forget some of their historic chokes, but I would put those 2 easily above SB 42. Hell I was more pissed when the Bruins blew a 3-1 series lead to MTL a few years back. If the Pats had never won a SB it would be the clear #1, but 3 Lombardi's this decade sort of numbs the pain a bit.

Well said.

all anybody has to know about the 86 sox is wade bogs cried in the dugout like a baby .if one of the patriots was crying in the lockeroom after the game let me know .in 86 they had the champagne in the sox dugout ready to go .it said congratulations 1986 WS champion boston redsox on the jumbo tron at shea stadium .the owners lou gorman the GM were all in the lockeroom waiting for the sox to come in victories .86 was torture .it was like the most beautiful girl in the world telling you how much she wants to have sex with you. then dancing in front of you for two hours .slowly taking off her clothes .and then at the last second she says .I'm sorry I've changed my mind i have a headache. the more i think about it the pats loss in this years SB isn't even close . the sox were always so close and could just never get it done .i was thirteen in 1975 i remember that series .they lost in seven .today what the 86 sox did would be classified by the U.S. government as cruel and unusual punishment . after that game in 86 i was embarrassed humiliated and ashamed .the sox were a joke. i don't feel that way about the pats now. I'm a defiant and proud pats fan even after last sunday. i didnt feel that way in 86 .i felt like sticking my head in a hole

Yup, I dont think I could put it any better than that. Losses like that just don't happen, that's a movie script, not reality. The Sox made losing an art form for years and years, people were out wandering the streets for hours after that game in total states of shock wondering what the hell happened. Nothing could ever come close to that game.

NOBODY is a bigger pats fan than me.....that said, the '86 red sox collapse & the Bucky freaking Dent game both much more devastating for me than Last Sunday.

Maybe it;s the three Lombardi's sitting in Foxboro that helped ease the pain - I just know I felt much much worse following those two Red Sox failures.

The SB was just an untimely worst coached and worst played out of character hiccup from this dynasty. The Red Sox failures sent many fans to early graves.

When we finally get #4 next year - it will be all that much sweeter, for we would have been through a lot since #3!!

Of course XLII was voted the worst... the wound is still fresh and bleeding.

i just hate how shaugnessy manipulates information he does it all the time. Your enititled to your individual opinions but the survey clearly showed that XLII would have been the number one loss if it was done right. shuagnessy wrote a whole column based on a erroneous conclusion. it is annoying.
