In my book, the Patriots don't even make it to the medal platform. Gold, silver, and bronze all belong to the Olde Towne Team. And all the bad ones came at the hands of New York teams. Funny thing about that.

The Patriots get a pass on this one, and last year's AFCCG loss to Indy, and the Denver playoff game the year before because of the three SB titles they put in the bank before. Three in four years shocked the **** out of me. There is no way in the history of the franchise that any sign was exhibited that this could/would happen. Not to say I don't want it all next year though.

IMO passes are "earned" rather than given. The Pats earned a pass from me after the Denver loss by beating San Diego in the playoffs. They earned a pass from me after the AFC title game by loading up the offense, beating Indy in their house, and winning the AFC title. And to earn a pass for the Super Bowl.....

Didn't bother to read Shaughnessy, but if the OP had him right then I agree. This Patriots team (the Brady-Belichick era team) earned a lifetime pass from me when they won 3 in 4. They earned an unless you suck for the next 5 years pass from me after 2001 alone.

Doesn't mean I don't want or even expect them to win more. Just means I'm not going to evisverate them like a spoiled child who didn't get every last toy they wanted for Christmas if they don't. And wanting them to win every year is not to be confused with demanding they do, or else...

This one stings as it is the most recent debacle, and there is simply no other word to describe it.

I give the Giants all the credit in the world, any given Sunday, they were a team of destiny, blah, blah, blah, but come on; they did not belong on the same field as the Patriots, it was an embarassment of epic proportions. 18-0 vs 12-6, not even a debate. We have three pro bowl O Lineman who looked like Pop Warner players, the Giants D Line is very good, but they are not the Steel Curtain, the Fearsome Foursome, the Purple People Eaters or anything close to them.

We're talking Eli ****ING Manning here people, he threw more wounded ducks in that last drive than Chad noodlearm Pennington had all season.

For what it's worth, 86 is the worst; to blow a two run two out lead with nobody on base is THE worst of the bunch.

Why does sh!t like last Sunday, 2003, 1986, 1978 always happen vs New York teams, it is mind boggling...........

It was how they lost and the stakes that made it painful. I agree, if BB or Brady never win another championship - sure, they still go down as amongst the greatest ever at their respective jobs, and Pats fans should feel fulfilled in the winning department.

But the particulars of last week's game were so painful that we'll probably feel sick to our stomachs any time we think of the given plays, much like one does when thinking about Buckner or Aaron Boone. It's not that they lost, it's how they lost.

I was too young for 86 to mean anything to me, but this ties 03 for me in personal painfulness, but I can see CHB's point. On a more New England wide scale, that is. In the "Red Sox Nation" v. "Patriot Nation" sense b/c of the 86 year drought, Sox loss would be worse. I can remember aimlessly walking back to my dorm room and seeing people in the streets of Boston flipping out, knocking over trash cans and other stuff, and otherwise looking generally depressed, and it seemingly being completely normal and acceptable behavior.

Well disappointment sure. It was a gut-punch, but the 86 Sox hadn't won the ws in almost 70 years. This team won 18 straight games and previous Pats teams had won 3, three, III superbowls, in four years. Come on!!! You are spoiled, like the 80ies Celtic fans and Yankee fans of almost any decade but the 80ies.

And what is this free pass stuff? Did they come to your house begging forgiveness?

The Sox in '86 was for A world series title... the Pats this year was for history. HISTORY!!! I doubt you or I will see an 18-0 team going into the Superbowl again any time soon. I am much more a Sox fan than a Pats fan, but missing out on this once-in-a-lifetime chance really hit hard in the gut....

I bought into the 19-0 history angle way too much. Way.... That's why this 'un hurts.....

I've never had such an exhilirating feeling of a sports fan than watch and follow this edition of the NE Pats.
There hasn't been a team that caught the attention of the entire sport world like the Pats.Prime time for 4 months,breaking all kinds of viewership records.
They are the premiere name and team in sports right now.
Its like when Joe frazier beat Muhhamed Ali.Ali was still the story.
I think about the loss in the SB and it hits me in the guts,like the thought of a freind that died.But it is time to move on.

I'd give the edge in worst loss ever to the '86 loss, just because of how close the Sox were to winning and how long it had been since the last world series win. But this passes the others. And while Bill Buckner will always be a household name in New England, the 2007 18-0 Pats will be remembered on a national level for a long, long time.

I read the first few words of the first sentence and stopped. I thought for a second it would be good, then I realized this is a guy who is just so desperate after his career ended in 04 with no more curse to write about. All Dan ever does is gossip, complain you name it. Where was he when everything was good? all he does is peek his head out and complain. I've lived through them all and this was by far the worst.

In 86 they had another game after that.

2003 was pretty bad but it was just because the Sox had still not won it. They were not trying to do something that had never been done before.

The Pats this year were on the verge of history, on the verge of forever separating themselves from every other team in the history of football and all sports for that matter. And to see if all come tumbling down the way it did was just heart wrenching.

I think it tough to compare losses as some are part of a 7 game series and some are a one and done affair . . .

From a historical perspective, one would rank this loss as the top simply becuase we were on the verge of history, something the prior Boston teams were not . . . From a pain standpoint for me this is probably the worst loss as I wanted the 19-0 and cement our place in history . . .

But from a dissapointment loss, I would not put it at the top once one looks at the facts and does not get caught in the hype. Com'n how much better were we than the NYG??? And I dont mean the NYG over the coarse of the yet, but the NYG that were on a roll the last 4-6 weeks, a team that match up well against us, had the most sacks all season, etc. I think it was closer that most people think, And with some fortunate breaks, and some good play they won . . . I think a loss to GB would have been worse.

I know Boston is a football -baseball town, but we must not forget a big loss by the Briuns. In 1971, the Briuns had the #1 seed, the best offense in the history of the sport (at that time - 399 goals) had 3-2 lead in the series, a 5-1 LEAD at the end of the 2nd period in game 6 against Montreal and gave up 5 GOALS in the 3rd period to loose 7-5. That loss it high in the rankings but doesn't get mentioned.

I think Game 6 '86 might be the worse as we were so close to winning . . .

Of coarse one silver lining for me is that fact that the Pats do have 3 SBs and are strong enough to perhaps get a few more, so that helps a great deal . .
