or was this going to happen anyway??

I am a big proponent of a helmet communication device for the defense.

Spygate to spark change?

The Washington Post writes today that NFL owners, in the wake of Spygate, might be more inclined to pass a rule change this year that allows one defensive player to have a communication device in his helmet.

"That should push this [approval of the proposal] over the top," said one NFL owner, who spoke to reporter Mark Maske on the condition of anonymity because of the controversial nature of the topic and the recent congressional interest in it.

"If there are no defensive signals, there's nothing to steal and nothing to videotape. I'm sure the league will want this and that should get it done."

The issue is expected to be discussed at NFL owners meetings starting March 30.

Re: Is this about sign-stealing??

I think the reason why they don't have that now is due to the possibility if you are going to have on defensive player play every snap it would work, they would need more than one available. That's why I don't think it's in place yet.

Or so I have heard.

Re: Is this about sign-stealing??

what is the defense going to huddle up?

how is the one defensive guy going to get the calls to the other 11 guys?

The defense already does huddle up and one guy already gets the calls to the other 10.

Heyy - that's it! Let's start a rumor that the Giants stole the Patriots signals!!!

CHEATERS!!!!!!

Re: Is this about sign-stealing??

this idea failed to get the votes it needed by 3 last off-season (think it was 3, was close). The Patriots where one of the teams that voted against it with BBs reasoning being that you don't have one defensive guy that you know will always be on the field like you do with the QB. Then if you allow 2 guys to have it to cover that and say only one can be turned on how do you know which is on?

one consipiricy theory was that it wasn't so much the Jets that nabbed BB it was a league setup (everyone knew what was going on) because the people that wanted this rule passed knew this event would push it over the edge.

Well, based on alot of the criteria used in the media and by fans to smere the Pats it's logical, they seemed to guess right every time! Wasn't that what some teams accused us of. This is sarcasm so please no posts insinuating that I'm an idiot-whatever!

Re: Is this about sign-stealing??

There is a problem that need to be worked out. On offense, the QB is the one who has the radio, as he will be in every play, on defense, teams shift packages taking players out and in based on situations, what happens if we decide Bruschi is our designated radio guy, and we take him out to put extra corners in in a 3rd and long situation, does somebody else get the radio helmet? Would they need to make multiple helmets in case of things like this or injury. Signals would still need to be used though, as how often have we heard stories about coach to QB radios being out.

You could probably design a system pretty easily that put receivers in the helmets of all players and reset each play so only 1 player per play could be contacted by the coach.

Re: Is this about sign-stealing??

It's also more likely that the radio set would get crushed at points when the defensive player goes to tackle. Plus, whose helmet would you put it in? Which player is on the field for every play?

I doubt they'd do that, if only because then who's going to monitor them to make sure only one player's headset is on? You might be able to go through a middle man, but someone's going to have to tell him whose headset to turn on and off. Though you never know, that might be the only feasible way around the "one-player-is-not-on-the-field-for-every-play" problem.

Like I said, it would be easy to design this system.

The defensive coordinator has a headset and a screen that let's him select who to open a channel to based on their number. The system is designed so that only one channel can be opened per down. The system makes it IMPOSSIBLE to communicate to multiple players. It is simply an application of hardware and software. The NFL sources the equipment, inspects it every game, and the teams use it. Really easy stuff.

Re: Is this about sign-stealing??

THat wouldnt work because the lineman have a different call then the linebackers and the linebackers have a different call then the dbs. They all have separate calls to make on a play that they get from the sideline positional coordinator.
