I admit I really don't understand the whole salary cap setup and process, so I'm hoping someone could shed some light on possible transactions.

Despite the O-line completely collapsing in the SB, I think we have bigger fish to fry on defense. The Giants may have been able to get to Brady and we definitely need to address either the coaching, the play-calling and/or the personnel (I'm looking at you Matt Light).

BUT, Brady and the receivers still managed to put 14 points on the board and handed the D a late-game lead to protect with only 2:30 needed and more than a few opportunities to get an interception, a sack or knock a pass down. The defensive line is pretty solid, I don't think we need changes there.

Rodney Harrison has probably another year or two in him. I'm not sold on Brandon Merriweather. He's had more "almost-interceptions" than I can remember. James Sanders is coming along, but we'll see where that goes. So despite my well known love of and want to get Ed Reed, I think we're okay at safety.

I'm not going to touch on LB too much. Everyone knows this needs to be addressed, badly. IMO, AD and Colvin are the only starters in that group.

Now, let's talk CB.

I love Hobbs, but let's face it, he's too short. He's good in coverage and most of the times when it looks like he's the one who missed a tackle, it's because he wasn't getting help from a safety. Now, that said, he puts up better numbers than Asante. Asante is not, IMO, worth his market value. He blows coverage too often, is short and is by no means a shutdown corner.

So of our secondary, we have no one of height to cover a Plaxico Burress. We have one side with coverage issues and a CB asking for way too much money. On the other we have a good CB in coverage that is worth what he's paid.

In short, I think we should let Asante go and try to trade for either a cheaper option or a better bargain for the money. This is where I started to think about Chris McAlister. He's 6'1", fast, physical, a ball hawk and excellent in coverage. He might not be Cromartie, but he is a shutdown corner. And he's on a team that's entering a serious rebuilding phase focusing primarily on offense and coaching staff.

So is this trade possible? Here's some information on player contracts for the Ravens.

If it's not possible, can anyone think of any other options? As far as contracts and signings that are coming up that cause some concern for people, here's my take:

I'm positive we keep Moss. Not getting a ring basically resets everything for him. He came for the chance to win, not for the money. I don't think that will change.

I'm thinking the same is true of Stallworth. Dante must know that another year with the Pats is the closest shot he's got at a ring. I say he stays and for cheaper than if they had won the SB.

Regardless of what choices the staff makes this off-season, IMO the biggest focus needs to be on O-line, LB and CB.

What does everyone else think?

McCallister gets beat more in coverage, than Tina Turner did in the 70s

First, he was injured this year. Second, there's a reason people 'pick on Samari' and not him. Third, at least get his name right. McAlister, not McCallister.

I do think we need t address the defense but I'm not going to blame the game on them.

They did a good job last Sunday.

i say we give up one of our DL and fix the CB problem...and also draft one with #7.

Trade Seymour. Green does a nice job when he is in there and quite frankly, he gets to the QB more. We would still be great on the D Line and Big Sey could bring in some CB/LB help

Rumour is Ty Law and Patrick Surtain might get the cap-axe in KC. One of them might be worth a look as depth heading into the draft.

Green gets to the QB more because he usually only plays in passing situations. His job is to rush the passer, and not two gap as much.

Wouldn't it be ironic if Law came back? Wasn't he one away from breaking the franchise pats record for interceptions?

As for McAlister, I like him as a player, but I feel like the better option would be to keep the draft pick (which is what we'd likely trade), use it to draft another position of need and resign Asante. I think any money we would save having Chris as opposed to Asante could be made up by drafting a cheap replacement for another position.

I really think we'll see some changes to the defense this offseason. I feel that two years ago we needed to reorganize our cap and "rebuild" in a way. Last year (AD signing aside) it was about ramping up the offense, specifically the WR position.

This year we're going to need depth at linebacker (or replacements for Tedy and Junior if they retire). I think the line is good, and the secondary could use depth and versatility.

On offense, I just don't see anything improving us, besides maybe a change in philosophy. Still, hard to judge things on the Super Bowl when the line played so well in almost every other game...

isnt McAllister getting a little old?

and i believe asante is not going to be back now...but pretty much anyone given a little time can do a lot of the same things asante does...i saw focus on the front 7 on D...

If we lose Asante I think it wuold be a good idea to consider bringing back Ty. He is still pretty good and we would need his veteran presence to help groom Asante's replacement (qib kalib please (I can't pronounce it either))

Perhaps I am crazy but I think that if we retained Ty Law we would have beat the Colts in the 2007 AFCCg & this years team would have been constructed differently.

FYI - Seymour's 2008 cap hit is now 6,836,720. Trading him before 6/2 would make his 2008 cap hit $12,000,000, an increase of over $5.1 million.

I wouldn't be surprised if we traded #7 for a veteran CB or LB and a 2nd rounder. Not saying we would and don't know who we would trade for, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

I'm not sold on Brandon Merriweather. He's had more "almost-interceptions" than I can remember.

Yeah, but he's a rookie. Him actually being around all of those balls was what was impressive. That shows he's got playmaker instincts. As long as he works on that this offseason (which he should, he has acknowledged that this is a problem area for him) I think we have the makings of one of the top safeties in the game. He can lay a hit on people (ask Ted Ginn Jr), he can get in position to snag a few INT's, and he can cover. Oh, and he could use a few sacks, as well, but that will come with knowledge. (I am a huge Meriweather fan, if you couldn't tell. I am like the anti-NSA.)

I do think we need t address the defense but I'm not going to blame the game on them.

They did a good job last Sunday.

For as much as the defense played, it did well. But the lack of production from the LB's not named Adalius Thomas was disturbing. And the CB position will need to be filled with Asante's impending departure.

who could we get to play inside? Vilma from the Jets now that they have harris?? As far as mcallister goes i think hes signed long term, but yeah him or champ bailey would be nice if we could have any player and there was no salary cap.
