I admit I really don't understand the whole salary cap setup and process, so I'm hoping someone could shed some light on possible transactions.
Despite the O-line completely collapsing in the SB, I think we have bigger fish to fry on defense. The Giants may have been able to get to Brady and we definitely need to address either the coaching, the play-calling and/or the personnel (I'm looking at you Matt Light).
BUT, Brady and the receivers still managed to put 14 points on the board and handed the D a late-game lead to protect with only 2:30 needed and more than a few opportunities to get an interception, a sack or knock a pass down. The defensive line is pretty solid, I don't think we need changes there.
Rodney Harrison has probably another year or two in him. I'm not sold on Brandon Merriweather. He's had more "almost-interceptions" than I can remember. James Sanders is coming along, but we'll see where that goes. So despite my well known love of and want to get Ed Reed, I think we're okay at safety.
I'm not going to touch on LB too much. Everyone knows this needs to be addressed, badly. IMO, AD and Colvin are the only starters in that group.
Now, let's talk CB.
I love Hobbs, but let's face it, he's too short. He's good in coverage and most of the times when it looks like he's the one who missed a tackle, it's because he wasn't getting help from a safety. Now, that said, he puts up better numbers than Asante. Asante is not, IMO, worth his market value. He blows coverage too often, is short and is by no means a shutdown corner.
So of our secondary, we have no one of height to cover a Plaxico Burress. We have one side with coverage issues and a CB asking for way too much money. On the other we have a good CB in coverage that is worth what he's paid.
In short, I think we should let Asante go and try to trade for either a cheaper option or a better bargain for the money. This is where I started to think about Chris McAlister. He's 6'1", fast, physical, a ball hawk and excellent in coverage. He might not be Cromartie, but he is a shutdown corner. And he's on a team that's entering a serious rebuilding phase focusing primarily on offense and coaching staff.
So is this trade possible? Here's some information on player contracts for the Ravens.
If it's not possible, can anyone think of any other options? As far as contracts and signings that are coming up that cause some concern for people, here's my take:
I'm positive we keep Moss. Not getting a ring basically resets everything for him. He came for the chance to win, not for the money. I don't think that will change.
I'm thinking the same is true of Stallworth. Dante must know that another year with the Pats is the closest shot he's got at a ring. I say he stays and for cheaper than if they had won the SB.
Regardless of what choices the staff makes this off-season, IMO the biggest focus needs to be on O-line, LB and CB.
