Did the Senator win the battle against the Pats?

With all the hype over the weekend on the 'tape', I as a fan felt deflated on Sunday leading up to the game. The airwaves were filled with spygate claims again and it was upsetting to say the least that we as fans had to put up with this crap so close to the biggest game in franchise history. Somehow the joy I had all week went to feelings of disgust!

Am I alone in this feeling - feeling deflated or disgusted on Sunday before the game?

I am just wondering, do you think that if fans felt this way, that the players and even BB would have felt a bit worried or deflated themselves? True or untrue, do you think it mentally could have screwed with their heads? I know how disciplined this team is and how focused they are, but after a while there is only so much you can take.

First you have the pressure of the 'perfect' season and on top of that you have 'spygate' resurfacing and looming over the team....was it all too much for this team to handle? Did it cause the team to come out flat?

Again, it affected me as a fan so it would stand to reason that it could have had an affect on the team leading up to game time. It could be an excuse or something I am looking for to help me deal with the lose, but did the Senator have his way with the Pats? I want to say, NO, but everyone saw what I saw? We could not execute as we did in the previous 18 games, we could not finish it off as we had in the first 18 games, we were not the same team as we were in the first 18 games. Did the Senator give the Giants the greatest assist in sports history?

No. I dont think it effected the players or the staff. I do think it effected the Fans....

unfortunately its not going away anytime soon... there are a lot more teams as guilty as the Pats.

Part of the blame for this one has to go to Goodell. If he had answered Specter's original letter from back in November, a second letter would not have been needed and there would have been nothing to report on.

As it were, these things were not done until days before the Super Bowl and it gave the sportswriters something to chew on. Bad move on Goodell's part since I don't think he wanted this to come up again. He certainly didn't want to spend the Q&A part after his state of the NFL union address discussing spygate all over again.

Hey Drew,
I completely agree. Saturday night, I felt like the thrill was gone from the game. To me, the final blow was when one of our supposed own at the Herald, (Rat bastard Tomase) printed the Walsh/Rams story.
It felt like the world wanted us and our the Pats beaten and hurt on Sunday, and these players are not robots, I think they did felt it to a point out there.
From a fan point of view, it's made me feel like I am wrong being a Patriots fan. In some ways they have even ruined the memories of the Super Bowl wins because we will forever be looking over our shoulders wondering what new rat may be disgruntled and have a story to tell. And the attacks on the city of Boston I've been reading...whats that about?
Maybe I'm still "Grieving"...lol, but that is how it all feels.

Yes it did! Given the history of teams dealing with any type of distraction/scandal before the game i would have to think it might have hurt the team. Just look back @ the most recent ones Raiders in sb37 were favored and got killed, Falcons no show in '98-'99

yes, that and perhaps even more the day before report from our own local paper. was it decisive in the loss we'll never know. but i think it got the coaches out of "their game" with the out of character bad play calling.

Partly true. However, from November 15th until February 1st, there were 77 days. Why did Specter have to wait 77 days until that Friday (OK, we all know the answer to that one, and it isn't "altruism").

Even more damning: Why did Specter, ON THE MORNING OF THE SUPER BOWL go on TV and Radio stating that he would be inclined to call Tom Brady to Washington DC to answer questions from him?

The QB of the team playing that night..... In the most watched US Sporting event in the history of television.....had to wake up the day of the game to the news that he was possibly going to be called to Washington to testify to a Senator and his staff.

Why did Specter all of a sudden target Brady? To get a first hand report on what had taken place? You would think so, right?

Yes, but he never mentioned Belichick for the same trip to Washington, did he? Wouldn't Belichick be a more direct person of suspicion in Spygate?

Why Brady? Obviously, Specter was abusing his power to affect the outcome of the game.

I was on a Jetblue flight out of New York around 11, and they have DirectTV, so I watched NFL Countdown, Mike & Mike and Bob Ley with Goodell and Specter.

I was livid. It ruined the whole day for me. I was not my usual psyched self leading up to the game. I knew that if the Patriots won, their victory would be obliterated by all the Spygate talk.

I find it pretty curious that you don't hear much about it now that the Patriots lost. Funny how it's like that, eh?

But missing the point is what teh REAL reason is...Comcast!!! As was said.. he is the senator from Comcast...they contribute the second largest amount of money to him...the first is Comcast's law firm..don't you think teh fact that Spector is attacking the NFL is because Comcast is having trouble with a deal with the NFL?? please...don't be that dumb...If a deal was done Spector would not give a damn...as for his Sunday interview..frauds like Mike and Mike who interviewed him...failed to ask him about the Comcast connection..and they kept wondering why Spector was doing it again and again...AND they KNEW about the Comcast thing but since ESPN is a network that depends on cable companies...they were gagged from mentioning it. Funny how truth is buried in all of this. Integrity??? Spector has none..if anything he should be investigated

This is definitely true, but didn't you get the sense the team seemed a little, I don't know, lackluster? I agree with the original poster, this news coming out last weekend was a complete and total downer for me (Tomase is truly the devil, as far as I am concerned) and these players, after thinking this was all behind them, have to deal with it all over again 24 hours before the biggest game of their lives? Of course they all knew about it, and I really cannot help but feel it somehow someway affected each and every one of them.
