Last offseason was probably one of the best ever by any football team:
1. Moss at a deep discount
2. Welker at a deep discount (in comparison to his production)
3. Stallworth at a slight discount (didn't live up to the hype). I wouldn't necessarily call this a steal as Gaffney ended up out playing him
4. AD Thomas at a slight discount to what he may have gotten if he waited (although he was also a disappointment)
5. Trading a first round for a better future first round.

If we can pick up some more discount players like last offseason, this team has a chance to be incredible again...

We really don't need this offseason to be as good as the last one. Resign Moss and a good draft to fill in some holes and we should be fine. I'm hoping with that 7th pick we get Vernon Gholston.

This offseason won't be as productive because we have less cap

space. I think we will have to rely more on the draft to fill our needs.

If the Pats lose Asante Samuel, they will have a tough time replacing

him. The trouble with discount players is that they eventually want to

get paid what they are worth.

it's only natural that we go through cycles in terms of offseason production/disappointments.

2004 Great offseason
all the core components of the Super Bowl team remain in tact, even the cooridantors
-Pats got Corey Dillon to replace Antowain Smith

2005 bad offseason
-both coordinators leave
-bad team additions
*Chad Brown
*Monty Beisel
*Duane Starks
-the best addition must've been Tim Dwight

2006 was a horrible offseason
-Deion Branch holdout/trade
-David Givens to the Titans
-Adam Vinatieri to the Colts
-Willie McGinest to the Browns

in my mind all four were beloved by the Patriot Nation and were heroic in their roles of the 2/3 Super Bowl Championships. It was devastating to lose those core players in one offseason, especially when you consider the output of the players we did add.

2007 it doesn't get any better than this
-Randy Moss for a 4th rounder
-Adalius Thomas
-Wes Welker
-Donte Stallworth
we got an embarrasment of riches in the offseason. Too bad we came up short.

With the greatness of last offseason and our current team, I think it is only natural that we suffer a bad offseason this season.

What I would like to see...

resign Moss and Samuel
Bruschi and Seau stay with team

The Pats can easily clear up $5M or so if they choose to let Stallworth go. Please note I'm not advocating they should, merely that they can.

Colvin's cap number of $7M can probably also be reduced somewhat.

P.S. I'm still not sure exactly what's going on with Eckel's contract (they put $5M in this year's contract; I still don't know why they put in a huge LTBEWHFO** bonus for 2008 as well).

**LTBEWHFO = Likely To Be Earned When Hell Freezes Over

Unless they trade for Chad Johnson, I don't see any big splashes.

It doesn't have to be as big of a splash as offseason since there were more holes in last year's team. If they can come to terms with Asante and Moss and address the linebacking in the offseason they should be fine for next season.

What about a Jason Taylor?
I know BB likes him, and he is a free agent isn't he?

I think we need to sign Asante, and I think we will... I don't think he will want to leave with the feeling that he let a ring for right through his fingers.

Are you crazy? - There will be some HUGE holes to fill with ILB and CB if Asante is gone and maybe Gay as well ,Much of the defense may need to be revamped due to some of the age and retirements - Seau and Bruschi are all but gone,Bruschi may stay but Seau is very doubtful

Jason Taylor is good but his age is a factor and did not have a good year on that 1-15 team

No one player would...
Not even Lawrence Taylor would have a good statistical season on that Miami team.

chad johnson openly expressed interest in playing for the patriots on saturday

http://www.daytondailynews.com/o/co...008/02/03/chad_johnson_prays_to_be_a_pat.html

PHOENIX — Chad Johnson is praying for a trade to the New England Patriots.

The Cincinnati Bengals disenchanted receiver — or as much as I hate to say this because I truly like the guy, more and more an ingrate — appeared at the Super Bowl media headquarters in downtown Phoenix Saturday and when a Boston reporter walked up, he gushed:

“I’m going to be playing for your team next year.”

When that drew a chuckle, he put his hands together like was praying and looked up to the heavens.

“It would be fun. I’d love to play there,” he told reporters. “But right now I’m in Cincinnati. That’s where I am.”

Johnson kept up his drumbeat to get out of Cincinnati when he appeared on the Jim Rome show, Saturday, and said he didn’t feel everyone in the the Bengals organization embraced him.

Pushed later for specifics, he refused comment.

In April 2006, Johnson signed a contract extension that would keep him a Bengal through 2011. He’s due a $3 million in salary in 2008 and has an additional $550,000 in incentives. The base salaries the three years after that are $4.5 million, $5 million and $6 million that final year.

People say Johnson’s outbursts here at the Super Bowl are being orchestrated by his master-of-manipulating-the-scene agent Drew Rosenhaus and while that is probably true, Johnson doesn’t deserve a pass on this.

He’s a grown man and — business posturing aside — he’s responsible for his actions. Painting the Bengals with a sour brush every time he’s around the national media lacks class.

Yet, if he becomes too much of a distraction for the team his ploy may work.

The baggage-heavy Randy Moss came to the Patriots after two moribund years in Oakland, in part because he accepted a reduced salary — one year for $3 million plus an additional $ 2 million in incentives.

He dropped the ego — the way so many troubled stars have done in order to fit into the my-way-or-the-highway system of Pats coach Bill Belichick — and then caught everything that came his way. He had an NFL-record 23 touchdown catches on the season.

Moss is a free agent at the end of the season and has said he wants to return, but if he does not the Pats would be looking for a big-time set of hands.

For Johnson to fit into the Pats program, he would have do jettison the current screw-the-team attitude. Of course that’s just what Corey Dillon did and he became a Pats stalwart with a Super Bowl ring.

Johnson has been in regular contact with former Bengals receiver Kelley Washington, who was dropped by the club after last season, picked up by New England and has become the star of the Pats special teams.

Earlier in Super Bowl week, Washington said he’d heard from several of his old teammates. He said they all told him” how great it was for me and how they wish they were here playing, too.”

Now Johnson is trying to turn wishful thinking into reality.

Hmm, pick up option on Stallworth or trade a high round draft pick for The Chad for similar dollars. If we can resign Moss, I think I can settle for Moss, CJ, Welker, plus others. Now I'm putting my hands together like I'm praying and looking up to the heavens. :D

reunite welker with Jason Taylor

I would love to see a Moss/Ocho Cinco/Welker offense play. Can't double cover 2 elite receivers.

I hope most of our wide receivers stay, so we don't have to add

WR to ILB and CB. As a last resort , we can always franchise Randy Moss.

last offseason was great, but to plays devils advocate:

1. Moss at a deep discount

my guess is that after incentives are added in, Moss will earn in 2007 about 75% of what he'll get in 2008

2. Welker at a deep discount (in comparison to his production)

Welker was great, but I'm not sure on the open market he goes for THAT much more than what he have him for. an awful lot of his success is tied to the team...out of the OL, Brady, Moss, he is easily the most replaceable.

3. Stallworth at a slight discount (didn't live up to the hype). I wouldn't necessarily call this a steal as Gaffney ended up out playing him

he ended up our #4 WR. thats downright terrible value for a $6.5m cap hit

4. AD Thomas at a slight discount to what he may have gotten if he waited (although he was also a disappointment)

this is still a good deal, but wasn't a homerun this year imo

5. Trading a first round for a better future first round.

obviously this worked out great

so, the Moss deal worked out real well. the Stallworth deal ended up pretty bad. the Welker deal was good, but again, if Welker goes to any other team he doesn't have nearly as good a season, so I think what we're paying him is pretty fair.

so yeah it ended up great in sum, but not every big move worked out in 2007
