Maybe they are not there in most of draft sites....

But look for another guy who could be interesting too. I even read he was a better pass rusher than Gholston: Derrick Harvey from Florida.

Yeah, there are some links out there (easy to find). Just keep in mind that these profiles are opinions based on one author's observation, or borrowed opinions from other web sites. I grain of salt most (not all) of them.

Regarding Gholston...

As I mentioned a while ago, Vrabel would be the best scout for the Pats for the inside scoop on him. With his close ties to Ohio St, Vrabel will know if Gholston has the intangibles and smarts to play in the Pats D. And playing the same position will certainly help. Of course Vrabel won't be posting any profile for you to read however. Oh well...:bricks:

that's disruptive. that's something that this team needs.
he's tied vrabel's record for sacks for OSU
and he has experience playing coverage...

If we can trade down a bit and grab him assuming he doesn't work out like a beast in the combine which is quite possible. If he runs below a 4.6 he could be a top 5-10 pick...

He could, but I think it's really depending on the combine at this point.
If he runs a 4.7 ish, I think he's around 10-15
If he runs a sub 4.6 he's a top 5 pick.
Also don't forget the skills drill - how does he look in coverage, how fluid are the hips?

Also, does he bench a freakish amount?
Say above 30? Which he very well could.

So if he runs well, benches a lot, and looks good in coverage I could see him as a top 5 pick.

We're talking about a young pass rusher who's 6'3" 255lbs, and supposed to have some speed. He's supposed to have run a 4.56 in the past, so anything over a 4.6 likely wouldn't improve his standing.

Also, he's got Chris Long sitting just ahead of him, and Harvey sitting just behind him. You've also got some other good OLB's/pass rushers available later in the draft, so I doubt he'll go in the top five.

Your evaluation of that play seems to miss a few things.

Jake Long gets a deep drop (maybe a little to deep) and angles his body toward the outside, expecting help from the guard (#57 Adam Kraus) on the inside. It seemed the Guard was expecting the center (#54 Mark Bihl) to help out againt, or take #90 (Quinn Pit****), as he also starts his drop angled toward the outside (he even looks at Gholston), but the Center ends up taking the wrong man, which allows Pit**** to get a good rush up the gut. Michigan's guard isn't able to take the inside gap away from Gholston (his intended assignment), as he has to quickly turn the other direction to block Pit**** who's coming up the gut.

Jake tried to recover and held Gholston off just long enough for the pass to come out. So, that entire play was caused by a missed assignment on the O-line, and Pit**** getting upfield pressure. Gholston also got a good burst off the snap, but he was given a free lane toward the passer because of the missed assignment.

I should also mention this game is from 2006, and Long's tech improved during his final season at Michigan.

Yea, maybe if he puts up some amazing numbers, but 4.6 in the forty at 255lbs wouldn't increase his stock.

For his size I'd consider 4.5+ in the forty freakish, especially if he combines that time with an outstanding vert, a bunch of reps, and he looks quick/fluid during coverage drills.

In their first mock drafts, Pro Football Weekly and Draft Insider both have Gholston going to the Pats at #7. Mel Kiper and Scouts Inc. (both on espn.com) and NFL Draft Countdown all rate Gholston #7 overall. TFY/Scout.com (used by SI.com) has him at #16, behind Dan Connor, Keith Rivers and Quentin Groves.

Gholston's agility/COD tests at the combine, and at later workouts, will go a long way toward determining if he is a top 10-worthy OLB for the NEP. If he is, then our ILBs of the future may be Vrabel and Adalius Thomas - unless Karlos Dansby is signed from Arizona.

Too bad that James Laurenaitis elected to stay at Ohio State; he would have been just what this doctor ordered.

Laurinaitis was tooled on by LSU. Can't shed blockers, always made the tackle 10 yards later.

I have to agree with what was said earlier about the Michigan match up. It looked like Long was expecting inside help on one play, however on the other Long just got beat.

In the Michigan-Florida bowl game, Long abused Harvey, treated him like a 9th grader from the band going out for the football team. I am not a Harvey fan and I have a hard time projecting him at OLB in our defense.

After watching Gholston in the LSU game, I have more questions than answers on him.

Honestly, trading further down in the first round and taking Groves is starting to look better and better to me. As a DE he is a horrible run stuffer, but as an OLB in our defense, I could see him blowing up TE's and FB's to get to the ball carrier and even being taught coverages. And of course, he is a beast off the edge with an explosive first step.

If there is one thing we learned in the playoffs it is that a sorry pass rush in front of a soft zone defense equals swiss cheese defense.

Laurinaitis doesn't fit NE's system, and I doubt the Patriots would have selected him. The guy I wish had come out is Rey Maualuga. He would be a beast at ILB in NE's system, and I believe he'll develop into one of the best ILB's in the NFL within his first two-three years in the league.

Completely agree. I'm a Groves at 3-4 OLB fan as well, and I love his pass rushing ability. If we're going to talk about freakish ability why aren't we talking about Groves? He's 6'3" 250lbs, and he ran a legit 4.43 forty for NFL scouts. That's freakish folks. if not for the injury problems he had this year people would be mentioning him a lot more, and I think some people don't fully realize he played through the pain (dislocated three toes), and still put up good numbers.

Completely agree. I'm a Groves at 3-4 OLB fan as well, and I love his pass rushing ability. If we're going to talk about freakish ability why aren't we talking about Groves? He's 6'3" 250lbs, and he ran a legit 4.43 forty for NFL scouts. That's freakish folks. if not for the injury problems he had this year people would be mentioning him a lot more, and I think some people don't fully realize he played through the pain (dislocated three toes), and still put up good numbers.

i like him too but his motor has been questioned and whether it was the toe or not that affected his senior year remains to be proven. Hopefully it was the injury that held him back because i think he can be a special player. Probably not a first rounder until combine.
