7. Vernon Gholston, OLB, OSU- chances are Colvin is gone, and it'll be nice to have a young stud with a nonstop motor....I think we all saw what a difference a pass rush can make...

63. Kevin Smith, RB, UCF- will be a great complement to Maroney, it's a very deep RB class, and chances are Smith is as good as anyone you would get in the bottom of the first, he didn't face a lot of competition, but I really do think he's going to be a stud in the pros

69. Charles Godfrey, CB, Iowa- has loads of amazing athletic potential, is a very hard worker and good tackler, helps in run support,

95. Trae Williams, CB, USF- reminds me of Ellis Hobbs, very fiery, physical, and tough

127. Ben Moffitt, MLB, USF- read and react linebacker, makes all the defensive calls for USF, over 40 starts, he may have already maxed out on potential though

159. Marcus Griffin, FS, UT- comes from a great program, and has the bloodline, underachieved a bit, but he might blossom in the NFL, he definently has the physical tools

191. Jerome Felton, FB/ST, Furman- special teams stud

I agree we don't need a running back, but Smith was more of a BPA pick, he's a guy that we can run draws with to beat the outside blitz, he plays within the scheme and hits the hole with amazing speed, he has also shown that he can catch out of the backfield....we need a better running game because there will be times our passing won't get it done, a solid two back system will reap results in play action, and will make sure we don't lose the next time we get to the super bowl....but I do agree with your sentiment that we need a new tackle...I thought about taking Collins, but he sucks run blocking.

Sounds like fun --- I'll do it a little differently than you. I'm projecting Moss is re-signed, Stallworth and Washington are cut, either Bruschi or Seau retire, Colvin restructures and tacks on another three to four years at a reasonably cap hit, and the Patriots do nothing in free agency. The last assumption is wrong, I know, but there is too much variability right now.

#7) Mike Jenkins CB South Florida -- the Pats need a replacement for Samuals and someone who can match up against a bigger receiver; Gholston is tempting as I think the Pats should go into a season with 6 reliable LBs, and they only have 4 on the roster (Thomas, Vrabel, Colvin, one of Seau/Bruschi) but I don't think Gholston quite rises to Ware/Merriman freakiness.

#63 --- Josh Barrett SS Arizona State --- the guy I really wanted as a value proposition, Frank Okam went a couple of slots before this one --- the write-up screams Pats player --- leader, very intelligent player who has the physical ability to be drafted much higher with some injury concerns bringing him down. I figure 2008 will be Rodney's last season and New England tends to see its safeties decimated by injury, so have four good safeties next year to start the season would be nice.

69) Ezra Butler OLB Nevada --- He will be an ILB conversion project over two seasons but he has some experience playing in a 3-4 and has all of the desired measurables. Sooner or later the Patriots have to spend some 1st day draft capital on LBers, and they were willing to spend a 3rd on Stewart Bradley last year.

95) Trae Williams, CB, USF- reminds me of Ellis Hobbs, very fiery, physical, and tough (stealing your lines --- I like)

127) John Greco OT Toledo --- let's give Kaczur some competition

159) Rafael Little RB Kentucky --- reinforce special teams and find a scat back who may be able to be hidden on the PS for a year until Faulk starts to think about retirement.

191) Sam Keller QB Nebraska --- late round QBs are cheap gamble on greatness picks --- he has the stature to be a prototypical QB --- does he have the talent? Who knows?

227) Best available punter --- Hanson killed the Pats with his inability to either boom it or place it within the 20 --- let's get some competition there.

I wouldn't mind taking a RB, just not early. I think Faulk is not going to last much longer as he gets older and is more prone to injury. Draft a 3rd down back and store him on the PS for a few years.

even though we were second in the league in sacks, it never felt like we could get to the qb at will, and gholston could be a force on the outside
if we let asante go we will need to get a talented corner either high in the draft or in fa and jenkins is probably the best this draft has to offer, altough i would rather trade down and take a chance on a guy like aquib talib

there werent many guys at 63 or later that i loved, other than these two. while i like sammy morris a lot, how quick will he come back and he isn't getting any younger. cassel's contract will be coming to an end soon, and henne would not be a bad number 2 to groom

Everyone's so quick to cut people. I remember last year everyone was saying Gaffney would be cut during training camp. Despite the fact that during the playoff games in 07, he has close to 15-20 catches 200 yrds catching and 2 TDs in 2 games.

Moss intends to resign, when he is double covered, Welker will still be the slot guy, and Stallworth will be the other single covered deep threat.

I think Stallworth can be cut for next to nothing - his big bonuses are not guaranteed and are not due until Feb 25th I think. Washington is in the same boat.

If we keep Stallworth without restructuring, his cap hit will be $6.5m next year, which is madness. He should make about $2m per year based on his production.

I'd keep Moss and one of Samuel or Colvin. If it's Samuel that is kept, I'd go with Gholston at 7.

If it's Colvin kept, I want Dominique Rogers-Cromartie whether it's at 7 or trading down a bit. I haven't seen him anywhere near as high as I have him on mocks, but I love what I saw at the Senior Bowl. Looked like a blue chipper to me and like picking him at 7 wouldn't be a huge reach come combine/draft time.

Don't know enough about the draft/NCAA football to even get into late 2nd/3rd round picks and later.

I dont think we need him. He will cost us an early day 1 pick and I think the PAts have more pressing needs then RB. With Maroney, Morris and Faulk we have a very solid RB core. And if we can re-sign Moss and either Gaffney or Stallworth then our passing game will be one of the best in the league again. And a solid RB core is good enough with that.

7. Vernon Gholston, OLB, OSU- pass rush and defense wins championships

63. Jonathan Hefney, FS, Tennessee- I wanted to take a cornerback here, but Hefney seemed to have the most value here with the current top 200 list. Hopefully, we move Wilson back to cornerback and pick up the best free agent veteran CB available too. Merriweather at SS and Hefney at FS would look good to me or if Sanders continues to develop as a safety, consider a saftey tandem of Sanders and Hefney since Merriweather can play corner too.

69. Ezra Butler, OLB, Nevada- I really like what I read about him. He is listed as OLB, but looks big enough to play ILB too.

95. Dwight Lowery, CB, San Jose State- tough choice between Trae Williams, Chevis Jackson or Dwight Lowery here. I like them all at this spot, but i'm taking Lowery for now because he has a listed 4.5 40 time and the others 40 times are not listed and he is 6'1" so he has the height to match better against tall guys like Plaxico Burress.

127. Patrick Lee, CB, Auburn- another fast and tall CB to help our secondary. I was also tempted to take Trevor Laws at this spot

159. Craig Stevens, TE, California- BB loves tight ends and we finally go with offense with this pick. Kellen Davis is rated higher here, but I went with Stevens since I'm a Cal alumnus (Go Bears! lol) and he is a better blocker although his hands need work. After the superbowl, i think we could use all the blocking help we can get against the better pass rushing opponents we face. I was almost tempted to take Clady with our #7 based on the way our Oline played in the superbowl, but i realized that we can't replace the entire Oline at once so the next best thing is to give them some more tight end blocking help and hope Dante can fix the deficiencies with our current group since they had been playing well together up until the big one.

191. Jonathan Zenon, CB, LSU- don't know much about him, but his bio says he is a playmaker and he went against some of the top competition in the country on a championship team. To me, that makes him worth the pick here although Maurice Murray looked intriguing here as a big prototypical DT/DE for a 3-4 defense. If trade ups were allowed in this mock, i might have also considered trading up for Jacob Hester who is currently ranked at 190.

223. This list only goes up to the top 200, but here i would consider taking a punter, kick returner, or developmental RB or DT or OL, etc. Basically, i'd take the best player available or use this pick as trade bait to move up or trade into next year's draft, etc.

That would be a dream for me to be able to get both Rodgers-Cromartie and Cason. Well see how they do in the Combine, but right now they are my two favorite CBs.

If we're going to pick a RB in the second round, I'd greatly prefer that it be Chris Johnson from ECU, who is an absolute STUD on returns. The problem is that I think a lot of teams are going to be going into this draft looking for Devis Hester 2.0, and he's the closest you're going to come. Given that, he might not even last to the Pats 2nd round pick, but if he does, I grab him. There's nothing that would please me more than some stability in the return game, I don't want to get to the playoffs again and have our best option for returning kicks be our #1 back.
