In football, nothing even comes close. Baseball, the leader in the clubhouse was 1986/Buckner, which 2003 came close to. But those losses lost a lot of their sting when the Sox won the World Series. This is so incredibly painful because of the all the negative energy towards the Pats, the grind of the perfect season which became so exausting, and how close they came here. It's hard to even think about next year. The thing is, nothing can erase this unless there was ANOTHER run at a perfect season, which at this point is the last thing I'd want. Awful awful awful.

it just feels worse now.

Well, it's as bad as it can get in professional football. But it's the price that comes with constantly playing at this level and getting to this stage. It sucks, but I'd rather have three SB wins and 4 AFC championships alongside this terrible loss. than no championships and no terrible loss.

The saddest part is that it makes me want to forget the 2007 season entirely. All the great games, all the records for naught. And it was in our hands too (well, Rodney's, Asante's and Brandon's hands to be more specific). When Randy caught that TD I thought that it was the clincher, that this was the payoff for such an excruciating game, a season full of hate from everyone and it would heal the wounds of the AFC title game in Indy. Now the game just made the wounds permanent.

For some reason the Indy playoff game last year was worse for me - far worse. Not sure why.

I agree. I think it feels worse because the officiating was poor that game and I felt they got robbed, at least a little bit. After a few weeks of perspective I think I can say the Pats just got beat by a team peaking at the right time. It still hurts but the loss seems more honest.

Then again, I may just be making this up, I still feel like crap now. :(

Agree w/that.......I'd rather feel bad than not feel anything at all. Actually, I think I'll change my sig to that.

Belichick fan--last year was worse for you? Wow, that game definitely sucked, but this is worse for me. The perfect season/greatest of all time stuff is really getting to me.

i feel the same as i felt after last year Indy loss...

terrible...

when Moss made it, i was sure it was done; the Ventrone did his job...i said at 04,00 a.m.: no way Eli can do it...

sigh...

no slept at all in those 3 ours...from 04,00 to 07,00...

I agree. The fact that you know people like Gregg Easterbrook out there have a giant ****eating grin on their face, and are now attributing this to "karma", or some bull****, makes it all the worse.

it will be a while before I am over this, but this is not the worst sports loss for me. this is the loss of a championship by an undefeated, three-time champion of recent years. it hurts like heck, but it's still a champion's loss.

the 86 sox loss is still in its own universe for me, in terms of how i felt at the time.

i understand what you are saying and i feel great pain today myself. i only hope that with a little time you will be able to see this for what it was: a painful loss of a championship game by a great champion. it's the stuff that legends are made of and one day this team will be a great legend.

By far the worst experience I've had as a fan. '86 was bad but that was so long ago and the Red Sox were not as dominant as these Pats were. The only thing that could ease this pain is if they win the Superbowl next year.

It hurts me so much that i did not listen to radio or read newspaper this morning and next days. This is the worst performance I have seen.

1-Nobody protected Tom Brady. As a result, he was sacked and knocked down more than we can imagine.
2-Pats offensive receives 3+ penalties for false start in third quarter.
3- 14 points in a 60 min game.? What happened to half time ADJUSTMENT.? If this is how #1 offensive team scores, it was a ****ty game.
4-The bottom line is our offensive was NO GOOD at all even though the weather was nice.

Of course, our D didn't deliver in the last 2 minutes. By the way, did anybody notice that the LAST TD which GIANTs scored in this game WAS EXACTLY the same TD which was SCORED in game 16.? Nobody in defensive staff took notes of this.?

I'm a freakin zombie today. I dont know how I feel. I am disapointed and frustrated. I had said throughout the year that in some way I wish they would lose a game, so that the focus would turn towards the Superbowl. A much simpler goal if you ask me.

I doubt we will ever see an opportunity like this, for an undefeated season. That is the most frustrating part. We were one loopy pass into triple coverage away from going down in history. No matter what happened in the future, we'd still have the 19-0.

I'm sure I'll get over it soon enough. They will be in the hunt again next year. But right now, I can't stop thinking about the game and what could have been.

AS I feel you completely.

I know this sounds foolish to most, but I agree with you that the only way the wounds from this season can ever be truly healed would be with a perfect run.

Of course we all will start to reload for the upcoming season and another Super Bowl run, but the only way to ever truly make up for this loss would be accomplishing what we were 60 minutes away from this season, football immortality.

That’s what hurts so much, it’s not just a regular Super Bowl loss. Hell, there’s always next year when it comes to gunning for another Super Bowl, someone wins it every year! But immortality? Perfection? That is something you must capture when it is right in front of you.

There is almost no “There’s always next year!” in terms of perfection. It is something that can be flirted with very rarely and letting it get away like that is heart breaking. From the greatest team of all-time, to a team that will forever be marked with the numbers 18-1.

Absolutely. I could have travelled to Foxboro any time over the last 15 years that I have been a Pats fan. Why did I finally do it for the AFCC? Because this was history in the making. I would be able to think back and say, yes I was there for 18-0 during their perfect run. The framed program and ticket stubs would be a constant reminder of immortality and the small part I played as a fan in the stands. Now? Well, I dont have to buy a frame....

I agree with this, for this reason, the Sox had that game WON. It was over, they were WS champs, and then it all caved in.

All along I thought this would be a tough game, and the way they played in the first half, and all the way up to the last drive, made me think they could lose it. It was not the kick in the nuts that 86 was, it was a stomach turning game, but I never felt the Pats had it won. When the Giants got the ball with 2:30 left I thought "that's a lot of time"

i feel like **** right now, i have not slept, in classes nothing went in, and my friends, who are eagles and panthers fans kept laughing at me, though they lost to us few seaons in a row, but one thing i learnt watching sports, everything is like a bouncing ball, we almost reached the pinnacle of american football, bu we dropped and hit rock bottom in 60 minutes, however, when you hit the ground you bounce back up, thats what i expect us to do, though theres a weird streak that the last few losers of the superbowl have yet to make the playoffs the following season, please dont let that be us

Though very painful, this doesn't come close to 1986 WS for me. I couldn't sleep for days after game 6. Even though there was game 7 to come, I knew it was over. After years and years of spring hope and fall futility, after hearing my grandparents and parents bemoan the near misses and the championship void, I was sure the Sox were on the verge of winning the series. I was so sure, I went out to the kitchen and poured myself a stiff vodka to celebrate--I never drank it. 2004 & 07 took some of the sting out, but that sad disastrous night (of which Buckner was only a small part) still gives me pain to recall.

Last night hurt, but maybe seeing the Pats win 3 SBs, 4 AFC championships, and capture innumerable records this year makes this loss one of those flukey sh!t happens losses. The missed sack, the two missed ints, the lost recovered fumble, the circus catch, Brady's slightly off play--this was a perfect storm of miscues that usually happens to other teams and rarely happens all at once.

I'm not talking karma b.s., just some cosmic bad luck accompanied by bad play on the Pats' part and good play on the Giants' part.

We won't likely go 18-0 next year and maybe that's a good thing. I'd put some dough on the Pats getting to the SB though.
