Biggest game in sports history tonight?

It already had historic implications with the prospects of seeing the first 19-0 team in the league's existence. Now with recent developments of media scoundrels trying to tarnish the Patriots dynasty, and the level-headed ones defending us (shout outs to Jaws, Golic, JJ, Howie, etc), it feels like tonight the Patriots are not only going for history, but defending their new millenium dynasty that when all is said and done may end up being looked upon as the most dominant in league history. Can you think of a bigger game ever, in any sport?

For this country I think it is - other countries may have had bigger soccer games or whatever.

Regarding the Miracle on Ice, I imagine many will agree that was bigger but to some of us the NFL is bigger than the Olympics. Although the MoI was before the Olympics sold out to professionals, the Olympics is pretty much dead to me now.

The Miracle on Ice transcended sports, though. It entered into politics and the history of the Cold War. No matter how great this Patriots team is, no matter how great this game is... it simply has zero chance of ever reaching the plateau of that game in Lake Placid. I understand that this is a big deal to Patriots fans and football fans, but it isn't really that big a deal to the world.

You could also argue that Jackie Robinson's first game was just as historically important as the MoI, too, though it lacked the sensationalist underdog story.

Granted, the Bird/Magic showdown didn't have the historic implications until they saved the game of basketball in the NBA, but they were the two best players in college, it was a battle of the flashy Magic from Lansing vs. the hick from French Lick, a battle of a dynamic black star vs. a silky smooth white player, a battle of the giant urban university in Michigan St. vs the upstart, small rural school of Indiana State.

Good points, for some reason, I still think that this game is bigger. The only game that's bigger in my mind was the miracle on ice.

I also don't think that Game 7 against the Yanks in 04 was bigger. That series as a whole might have been bigger. It is a close one for me right now.

My stomach is telling me this game, for me, is one of the biggest I can remember. I only recall being this nervous and anxious before Game 7 in '04. I've never felt this way before any of the other Superbowls.

Time cannot move fast enough.

Yeah, the '04 Yankees series, in my opinion, isn't bigger than this one...the way it was won, and the way the playoffs turned out (3 game sweep, followed by an absolute battle against their nemesis, followed by a 4 game sweep) was historic. But in terms of implications, and real world 'history', I think this game is bigger.

That said, go over to SoSH and ask those guys, they might have a different opinion (oh, and for any big Sox fans, if you know about the 'Win it For...' thread over there, you know that meant a whole hell of a lot to thousands and thousands of people...I still get shivers thinking about that thread, it brought tears to eyes that hadn't cried in years).

Except that miracle on ice was on tape delay and no one (NO ONE) thought the upstart Americans had a chance against the russians. When word spread that the US had won, everyone wanted to watch the game, knowing the outcome. That was only the semifinal, so the US had to face Sweden/Finland/Norway (can't remember which) in the finals. So essentially it was two games and one was on tape delay, taking away from the impact.
As a Pats fan, it's the biggest game. The only comparable game as a Boston sports fan would be the game 7 of the ACLS in 2004 but there was only 18 hours of hype for that, not two weeks.........Still today with perfection on the line, is bigger, much bigger.

People have reported that they were in church when the Miracle on Ice ended and their priest stopped in the middle of his sermon to say, "We won! We beat the Soviets!"

They had to face Finland. That hardly takes away from the accomplishments of that team. In the midst of the re-awakening of the Cold War, the US won a victory over a Soviet squad, a victory that would essentially be like Ball State beating the Patriots of today.

Now I'm guessing you mean in history of sports in USA, right? I must say, yes. But it you mean in the world, no. Basically, any World Cup Final game is more historic than any Super-bowl
