That article couldn't have been written by Shaughnessy, it's almost supportive of the Pats, even with the dig at the fans.
Right. Clearly a political point wrapped in a sports story. Specter is a Republican (in name only) and they got to ding the CIA and remember Nixon in an election season. Yawn...

This pretty much expresses how I feel. I'd also like to add to the Giants troll that Specter is a registered Republican, and caucuses with the Republicans the majority of the time. Those facts trasncend perception.

He's is a whack job, however.

Senator Arlen Specter is moron. What a waste of taxpayers money. Eagles fans should be embarrassed.

Everybody misses the point when they point to the "Eagles fan" part.

This isn't about Specter's fan allegiances.

This is about COLD, HARD CASH. As Mark Felt told Woodward and Bernstein - - 'Follow the money'.

Comcast. Comcast. Comcast.

Very true. I just meant they should not vote for him this year for wasting tax money on this. I would be if he was my senator.

GO PATS!

I see your up early this morning. i can't wait for the game to start

So let me get this straight. A Senator wants an investigation of how a private entity internally disciplined a member of it's organization with swift justice almost six months ago and yet the Senate Ethics Committee still has their collective thumbs up their ass about what to do with a Senator arrested for soliciting sex in a bathroom last summer.

Good googaly goo.

The only way to make this go away would be to use one of the standard responses (by either Belichick or Goodell):

1) I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my <insert family or team or organization> in confession. Out of respect for them, I will keep my discussion of the matter there — with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way.

2) I have admitted myself into a rehab.

Apparently the first one worked for Senator Vitter from New Orleans after admitting to using the services of a prostitute. This is was the guy who ran on moral grounds and claimed to be the epitome of righteousness.

Being a republican and all, Specter should be satisfied with the first response. After all if you ask you church for forgiveness, everything will be forgotten.

Do you know how important that Jet game film was? Evidently much more then millions of erased White House emails pertaining to a war and a CIA agent. Glad we have our priorities straight.

My guess is Specter's got money on the Pats and wants to be sure they'll cover. One thing's for sure, this talk ain't helping the Giants.

Shmess,
I can't believe you tricked me into clicking on a CHB article. It's the same pig with different lipstick.

I couldn't agree more. While Specter is probably delighted that he can add fuel to the loser Eagle fans and players ire about losing SB 39 to the Patriots (recall Donovan McNabb asking "can we get our rings back?"), his real target is not the Patriots but the NFL. He wants to embarrass them into relenting on the NFL Network standoff.

It is Goodell's actions, and not those of the Patriots, which are currently under scrutiny. However, by stirring the pot in this manner he has managed to flush out nut jobs like Walsh and now this "source" talking about a team employee allegedly filming the Ram's walkthrough on the eve of SB36.

The NFL may be the target, but the Patriots and their legacy will be hurt by this. It's what in military jargon is called "collateral damage". ("We're sorry we killed 300 mothers and babies, but they happened to be living near a restaurant where we thought Saddam might be eating dinner...") And I'm sure that an Eagles fan like Specter is just fine with that.

Remember the Hollywood celeb who let the cat out of the bag and said: " I don't care what they say about me, as long as they spell the name right".

Why do you think our busy politicians investigated baseball? Why do you think they will interview the Rocket man? Do you really think they give a damn about a few guys playing a juvenile game, as adults, injecting legal drugs, made by legal companies, unethically, into their bodies? Get Real!!

It gets free publicity, that's all...

Schmess, I have to say, I don't quite get how it's Comcast Comcast Comcast, and I will have to have it spelled out for my miniscule brain to interpret.

The only way the CCC theory works, is if it's a pure revenge stunt: NFL versus Comcast, pure and simple. Comcast ("big cable") hates the NFL for trying to push its product on them. So therefore Comcast decides to kick the NFL in the nuts via their lackey, Spector.

And... what? How does this help Comcast? As this plays in my mind, it's just revenge, with no blackmail. What does Comcast get out of a damaged NFL, even if Spector were to succeed? Alternately, was there at any time a threat either explicit or implicit that Spector would pull this stunt, if the NFL did not do X, Y, or Z?

Although the mantra "follow the money" usually strikes me as pretty reliable, I'm thinking this is more amorphous grandstanding than traceable toolmanship. It seems Spector has found a stunt that satisfies both the people who vote for him, and those who have their hand at the end of his leash. His money guys will be delighted, his fan/voter base will be delighted... it seems like a ploy to capture and use the hatred and fear of the masses to one's own advantage, at the time of most advantageous political timing (i.e., visibility) -- the Super Bowl.

What scares me, is that 44 states out of 50 are not in New England, and congressmen and senators up for reelection, not to mention presidential candidates, might decide to hop this wobbly bandwagon in a quest for votes.

I mean, if I were on a fence, and MY team kept losing big games to somebody, and I was convinced they cheated, by Jingo I would go right out there and vote for the loudest loudmouth on the subject out there.

So would you, all your protestations aside.

And for fans from 44 out of 50 states, well, you know the outcome.

I would think it would blow over, that the political calculus will be "don't brand yourself an idiot dilletante. It's a self-damning manuever."

But what would give it legs is not Comcast - though I am am sure they would laugh their butts off, and throw money at the whole spectacle. What would give it legs is p i s s ed off fans of loser teams....

"Break Up the Patriots!" (it's okay, we're not losers, we have an excuse!)

Oh okay don't break them up... just drag them through the mud and steal their first rounder from San Fran.

It looks good right now but if it gets hairy, Goodell throws the team under the bus for the sake of the league.

Blech. Well all, if it does get hairy, remember: fair's just the thing that comes to town once a year in the summer time.

PfVA,

It is the way politics and business works. You find a point where you can apply leverage. NFL games are very lucrative and the NFL is trying to garner exclusive rights to broadcast some of the games - a right for which the cable companies are being asked to pay a price they don't want to pay.

So, Joe CEO of Comcast calls up his favorite lap dog senator and says, "Arlen, can't you find a way to put some pressure on these guys? We wouldn't want to have to reconsider the generous financial support we have been providing, boy..."

Arlen blanches, says "yes sir," and hangs up the phone in pain. Then he paces back and forth for a while until he hits on the idea of "investigating" the NFL. Let's see, there is already a group investing MLB for steroids, and the NFL was the first major sport to require testing, so that's probably out... hey, what about the way the Commish handled the Spygate investigation? That seems pretty shady - was there a coverup? A conspiracy? Arlen calls in his assistant and tells him to draft a letter to Commissioner Goodell demanding an explanation. And so it begins...

And you asked, "what does Comcast get out of a damaged NFL?" It's not so much what they get out of a damaged NFL, it is what they get out of the NFL under the threat of that damage. Specter hopes he can work a backroom deal with Goodell, in which Goodell would go back to his bosses (Kraft, Jones, and the other influential owners) and convince them to soften the terms they are offering Comcast and the other cable giants. In exchange, Specter gets "distracted" by the economy or terrorism or some silly thing like that. Comcast gets what they want, and the whole thing gets forgotten...

I agree that Specter is probably delighted that he found a way to pressure the NFL which also happens to embarrass the team that beat his team in the Super Bowl, but I think (as I posted before) that that is not his primary motivation, it's just a bonus.

One more thing, PfnV - Goodell is between a rock and a hard place. No doubt he would throw the team under the bus if it would save his hide, but the problem he has is that he has publicly stated that his investigation revealed nothing that would have helped the Patriots win their past Super Bowl. He has staked his reputation on that.

Furthermore, as I stated earlier, he is the target. He can try to deflect the blame elsewhere but it won't do any good because it won't help achieve the goal of Specter's masters. Goodell will remain the target. Of course, the fact that Kraft is the head of the NFL television committee might lead him into the cross hairs as well, and then the Patriots become the target again.

It's funny, the article is pretty much dead on. BB has to be the best at getting his guys foaming at the mouth about this kinda sh!t. Hell, with this much ripe material for the picking, even I could write the pre-game speech.

I think that must have been the "easter egg" sentence to let us all know that it still was REALLY HIM and not a ghost writer :D
