This is one of the guys that I had pegged for the Pats in the last draft. I was surprised (as much as anything that happens on draft day can, anymore) when BB traded out instead of taking either him or Pozlusny with the second of the 1sts.

It's interesting what Jon has to say about his workout with Belichick. He mentions that BB really stressed consistency. That he was demanding to the point that he was intimidating.

Although the Pats chose not to draft Beason, the fact that Belichick personally spends the time scouting prospects like Beason at least demonstrates his willingness to draft rookie LBs in the first round. Too many fans and reporters think that he limits himself strictly to veterans at the position.

I really don't think its a matter of veterans or rookies as much as it is the fact that BB is really really really picky in what he wants in a starting LB. Couple that with the fact that Beason looked great as a rookie, and didn't make the grade for the Pats braintrust, and you wonder what a college player looks like who fits the bill. (Reportedly Vilma was on Belichick's draft card when he came out)

It also suggests, since its clearly so hard for BB/SP to find a LB they really like in the draft, once the Pats actually do finally find a blue chip LB who fits their profile, they might be willing to sell the farm to land him. Scarcity drives price.

In the end, I suppose this long ramble is all to support my theory that the Pats would be willing to trade up for Chris Long if they really see special talent in him, mental and physical.

I think the thing with meriweather is that we KNEW that philly was really interested with him at 26, so we took him at 24 and probably gambled that beason would still be around at 28.

No, we absolutely knew the Eagles were going to take him at 26. The Patriots drafting Meriweather was the only reason Philly traded out of that pick. For some reason they were banking on Meriweather's still being available, and there was a noticeable disgust within their war room when NE selected Brandon.

It should also be noted that members of the Patriots staff showed a decent amount of displeasure when the Eagles stole Stewart Bradley out from under them later in the draft.

I liked Beason too, but I'm perfectly happy with Meriweather, as I was hoping they'd draft him.

When it comes to not taking someone they could have easily had you should actually be talking about David Harris. NE could have selected Meriweather at 24, and still landed Harris at 28, but they decided trading out was the better option.

The night before the draft a lot of people started saying NE was going to take Harris. While I wasn't completely sure it was going to happen, it did seem like a pick that could make sense. I'm glad NE got the 7th overall pick in the 2008 draft out of that trade, but their actual return has yet to be determined.

Note: It will be interesting to see if NE can turn that 7th overall pick into even more first day selections. If they can trade into the 14-16 overall range, and pick up another first day pick I'll be very happy.

Just so we're on the same page - I'm EXTREMELY happy we took meriweather, I think the guy is a beast on special teams and he is the heir-apparent at safety.

Whats the most obvious answer? Merriweather,Vilma, Beason, K.Brown all went to the U(Miami). BB has had an endless fascination with UM guys and thats why I posted a mock trade a while back(our whole draft for Lewis and Reed).

I know BB likes Reed, but that trade doesn't make any sense.

Also, you forgot a certain big man also attended the UM. I'll give you a hint, he's in my signature...
