i agree - it was a very nice article

Very nice article with a positive look at the Sullivans, instead of the usual negative stuff.

(PS - I wonder if Pat Sullivan will get to say "hi" to his old buddy Howie Long? ;) )

It is a nice article but unfortunately the only thing most people will ever remember about Pat Sullivan is the incident with Howie Long.Memories like that die hard.

I always thought that incident made Pat Sullivan more likeable in Pat's fans eyes. Howie Long & Matt Millen looked like total loser bullies with what they did to him. They should be ashamed of what they did, and if they ever run into Sullivan, should apologize to him for it.

Deb,You're right but someone had to be an adult in this situation so I think there is enough blame to go around.Everyone was wrong and they All should apologize.

What happened between Sullivan and Howie Long?

They (Howie Long and Matt Millen, who played for the big bad Oakland Raiders) beat him up on national t.v. when Sullivan was celebrating (some say taunting Long & Millen) after a Pats win over the Raiders. Pat Sullivan, who was always kind of a goofy buffoon in those days, probably measures 5 1/2 feet tall. Blood running down the face and everything. It was a disgrace.

He was mouthing off to either Howie or Millen and they clocked him. Even Hannah's brother Charlie was wailing on him. John Hannah and Nellie just sat back and watched. Afterwards John Hannah went up to Sullivan and said "How does it feel to play with the big boys" or something to that effect.;)

The Sullivans meant well. If Chuck Sullivan had turned a profit and not financial disaster with his family's investment with the Michael Jackson venture, they would have poured the money right back into the team.

I didn't to me. Sullivan was being a real punk and if anything he got off light.
He was lucky he didn't get his head beat in. In face, if I remember right the
Pats players didn't even come to his aid PS was being such an ass.

Great article. Some nice stuff there i hadn't seen before.
“I remember,” he continued, “what Robert Kraft said to my three boys when he gave us a tour of Gillette Stadium just before it opened (in 2002).

“He told them: ‘Whenever you come here, remember that, if it wasn’t for your grandfather, the Patriots wouldn’t be here.’ “

Yeah, they were crazy, but I thought it was a good crazy. As I've posted before, They were ready to award the last franchise to Philadelphia, it was a done deal.

If Sullivan hadn't pulled off a last minute coup, the team that eventually was bought by Kraft would never have existed. That's a fact.

Married guys, imagine telling this to your wife:

In 1959, Billy Sullivan, who died 10 years ago next month, at the age of 82, used money his wife Mary had hoped would be the down payment on a summer house on Cape Cod to obtain a franchise in the fledging American Football League.

Their biggest fault is they loved the team above all else. They could have sold, but without a stadium, you know what that meant.
Most importantly, Billy Sullivan was the man who kept the Patriots in New England, when he was besieged with better offers from cities offering to build him a stadium and make him a rich man.

Pat Sullivan?

Sure, what he did was crazy, probably fueled by a few adult beverages, but he wasn't the only one sick of the home town being put down by ex pats (small p) and thugs like Millen.

Did I like what he did that day? No.

I loved it!
And all the previous week before the game there had been a lot of quotes in the paper, mostly from (Raiders defensive end) Howie Long talking about what a lousy operation we had.

I always saw that incident of just being between Millan and Sullivan, and don't remember Long's involvement. I guess, because it was Millan who smacked him with the helmet.

Howie Long was from Charlestown and Al Davis was from Brockton. McDonough (who I respected as a reporter) was contemptuous or jealous of Billy Sullivan.

Billy Sullivan called him a stooge for Al Davis, and he was probably right.

i think that both Kraft Family and Sullivan Family loves-loved 100% the Patriots and i liked the words have been used on this article

Yea, I also think the entire episode of what happened to darryl stingley still hurts and the phantom "roughing the passer" in 76, both with oakland, also fueled patrick sullivan.

I never felt that the Sullivan family got the respect due to them from the oafs who ruled the local media.

Willie McDonough was a suck-up, would be Hedda Hopper. When Al Davis was on the top of the heap, he ass-kissed Al Davis. When Parcels was ruling in New York with the Giants, Willie McDonut was on his knees ass-kissing Bill Parcels.

Since McDonut really didn't know squat about football, he disguised this by criticizing everyone when they lost. McDonut also masqueraded as an expert, by providing the "inside dirt". He reported on locker room feuds, the very personal antagonisms, and contract disagreements, exactly as if were Hedda Hopper in Hollywood reporting on the foibles of the self-centered narcissistic asses, with way too much money, and nowhere near enough brains, that inhabit that city.

McDonough, was always hoping to be promoted to the "Big Time. He tried to get to LA-LA Land or the Big Apple, and as the dean of Boston sports reportage, could never comprehend that some people actually do things and choose paths that do not include chasing the last buck.

Billy was actually proud of his home city; and sacrificed to keep his creation, the Patriots, in New England.

Bob Kraft demonstrated Noblesse Oblige and true class, when he didn't have to, since no one was looking, when he told Pat Sullivan's kids about their Grandfather. That may sound aristocratic and condescending, but it does take someone who is noble himself, to display that trait.

My opinion of Bob Kraft gets even more elevated. He too had his temptation; and Hartford'd politicians would have given him even more money, but just like Billy, Bob turned it down.

I still have the picture from that one. I may be wrong but wasn't it the mo mo who is the lions gm who slugged him
