Pats three-round mock?

Perhaps I am getting a bit too creative here, but I can see something like this occurring:

The Patriots trade the seventh overall pick to Dallas for the 22nd and 28th overall picks. The Patriots trade the 22nd overall pick to the 49ers for their 2009 first round pick. The 49ers move ahead of the Titans for their choice of wide receivers. The Patriots trade the 28th overall pick to the Falcons for their second-round pick from the Texans and their 2009 second-round pick.

The Patriots take CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and RB Steve Slaton in the second round. In the third round, the Patriots take LB Philip Wheeler and S Jamar Adams.

My whole take on this is that the Patriots really don't value any of the "top talent" in this draft. They trade out of this year's first round, get what should be decent first and second round picks in next year's draft, and still get four very, very solid players. I believe that Rodgers-Cromartie is as good as any of the corners in this year's draft. Slaton will be a great Faulk-style back with loads of talent. Wheeler is a smaller, faster linebacker who reminds me a lot of Tedy Bruschi. Jamar Adams is a good safety who may be a bit of a project, but good nonetheless.

There's nothing wrong with this year's draft. No need to trade out for next year. This might be a better draft than next year. If we trade for both of Dallas picks. I think we would use them.

I like your thinking, but I just don't think we would get as much in return as you are predicting. The Cowboys don't want to give up both firsts, and I would think that the 49ers would have learned their lesson about trading future first round picks.

The first part of your scenerio would be realistic if McFadden was

available at pick #7. The trade value chart shows the value of the Pats

pick and the two Dallas picks about even. I don't think that this deal

will occur because Dallas wants McFadden badly and is looking to trade

with Miami for the #1 pick.

With regard to the Pats trading for 2009 picks, I can't see them trading

for future picks since they stand to lose quite a few players to free

agency this year. I could see them trading down a few picks if they

do not value the available players as legitimate #7 picks.

There's nothing wrong with this year's draft. No need to trade out for next year. This might be a better draft than next year. If we trade for both of Dallas picks. I think we would use them.

I disagree about not stockpiling for future years. This year's draft may be better, but we really don't have so much space for rookies. That might change a year or two down the road.

Depending on how many of our free agents we resign will determine the potentail for how many rookie slots are avialable.

I think Wilson, Gay and Samuel leave for sure.

I'm hoping we resign Moss.

After seeing the entire second day of last years draft get scavenged through waivers, I would like to see something different this year. They take the 4-5 guys they really like in the first three rounds, use all the second day picks moved forward or to maneuver.... And go home. No other teams using our draft pick to stock their rosters.

Don't forget, 4 of those picks last year were compensatory and could not be traded. Those were 'gravy' picks for the Pats.

I think more draftees will make the team this year simply because
the Pats won't be able to fill all these vacancies thru free agency
and stay within the cap. Also, we have four picks in the top 100
during a good draft year.

Barry - A few things.
1) Stallworth and Washington are under contract with the Patriots. The only way they go somewhere is if the Patriots decline their options.
2) Mike Wright is a Restricted FA. He's not going anywhere this year.
3) Mitchell and Wilson aren't big losses. Both are supporting cast members that don't play a huge role and, in fact, missed a signifcant number of games this year.
4) Troy Brown has contributed only a lost fumble on a punt return. I love the guy, but reality check there. He's not done anything for the team this year.
5) The only guys you should be writing off are the guys who are free agents. Not potential free agents or retirees. Because we just don't know.
6) The entire 2nd day of picks was NOT scavanged on the waiver wire. Lua and Richardson were IRed and are still with the team. But, you are also being disingenuous or you don't understand that 4 of those 8 2nd day picks were NOT tradeable.
7) Kareem Brown was on this team for most of the year. The Pats had to make some changes because of injuries and, unfortunately, the Jesters picked him up when the Pats tried to slide him onto the practice squad. Same with the Cowboys snagging Justin Rogers.

Sorry, Jimke, but this is just FALSE. The Pats will easily be able to fill their roster through free agency and stay within the cap. Miguel has pointed this out on several occasions to people (including myself) who bemoan the cap.
