first, it was the boston globe book they put out on sale entitled "19-0"

NOW, the globe writes a story on city officials planning a parade
http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2008/01/29/parade_for_pats_is_issue_in_vote/

i mean, of course the city has to planned in advance, but cant we do this behind closed doors? this is the only year in which i can remember parade details coming out before a championship game(red sox or pats).
this just gives the giants a little more motivation. if you watched the 2004 super bowl dvd, you saw how belichick used the details of philadelphia's planned parade to motivate his team.

Menino said he does not want to jinx the Patriots by talking about a celebration before it is warranted, but he said a victory parade would probably start on Dartmouth Street near Columbus Avenue in the South End. The now customary caravan of Duck boats would carry the New England sports stars to Boylston Street, where the boats would turn right and head to Tremont Street and City Hall Plaza on Cambridge Street.

"We have to have a plan," the mayor said. "I'm just thinking about it; I don't want to jinx anybody."

too late tom.

You do know that every team does this right? That both the Chargers and the Patriots had pre-orders for their AFC Championship gear before the game? That these things don't just "poof!" into existence the moment the game is over? And planning a parade is a lot of work. EVERY team maps out a route in case of victory. This is business as usual.

You don't think the Globe called him and asked about it? I'm sure Menino didn't go up to them and say "hey guys, let me tell you my secret plan for the Super Bowl parade."

Of course they have a plan. Bloomberg is planning one too, I promise you. You've got to arrange for street closures, duck boat reservations, overtime for cops, etc in advance. Just like with the book, these are things which are done in advance EVERY year, and it's no more a jinx this year than it has been in years past, and both cities are doing it.

not getting my point. of course they have to plan these things out. just dont make it public. i just dont like the public nature of this. maybe, if you had read my full post, you would understand that.

As I said, the Globe probably gave the mayor's office a call for a comment, and he gave one. Hardly a huge secret that these things are planned in advance.

It's not like he held a press conference to announce it.

No, you don't get MY point. There were ads all over the internet so you could pre-order both Patriots and Chargers AFC championship shirts. PUBLIC ads. You give them your credit card and if your team wins, they charge you and send it out after the game. These things are ALL made public.

And who cares? Do you truly believe in a mythical Football God who is going to look down on the planning of a parade or a book and decide to smite the Patriots by forcing Brady to throw six picks? How does any of this affect the game?

Quite agree. I remember getting horrified just before last year's AFCCG when the old Boston Globe columnist whom I despise so much wrote something to the effect of planning a SB victory parade etc because of the way we defeated the Bolts. I got flamed here when I expressed that this was way too much for a team that prided itself on not giving anything to the opponent's bulletin board.

And now this...

I share your concerns fully: of course the league, the team and the city will have many plans but why have it mentioned? How many times in the Pats previous SB trips have we heard about these plans before the game was played??

Maybe there is one. I think a good % of us have seen/heard too many 'great' teams promise a victory and their cities plan a SB parade in public before the game and then the teams/cities humbled on game day.

you can pre-order super bowl championship hats and t-shirts too. thats nothing new. this is. this is the first time i can ever remember the parade details being released before a game, whether it be pats and red sox. i just dont like it.

herald has it too.

There were discussions and mentions in the paper before the second and third SB's, you guys either weren't following the team very closely back then or...something. Mumbles has never been able to avoid answering media questions about celebrations lest his crucial role in the whole process as mayor of Boston be marginalized...

Personally, I don't do drugs but I hear Zanex is your friend...

We have a non-believer in our midst! *rounds up angry group of townspeople with torches and pitchforks*

It's Xanax, actually. [Stupid psych meds with all their Xs and Zs. . . .]

Yup. Same with the Red Sox. The parade has always been planned before hand and the paper always reports it. I'm not sure why anyone would think this is new.

Zanex huh? Ok, I will give it a shot...

Sure about these discussions back in 2001? I was in Brookline and subscribed to the Boston Globe at that time. Don't recollect much attention given to any SB parades or championship T-shirts. But who knows, I might have been on Zanex's earlier version...:D

The shirts happen with every team, every super bowl. It's not an individual team decision-- the NFL prints them up and puts them up for sale, only charging you and sending the shirt if your team wins.

Yes, they had the parade route planned out. It takes a quite a bit of time to not only plan a parade but get down the logistics of closing off roads, providing security and toilets and such, permits, etc. They only mention it in passing usually, but when the state is asked if it is planning a parade should there be a victory, the answer is "yes".

Superstition is the hobgoblin of small minds....

I'll also add that I know about the shirts and such cause in the 90s my friend worked in a factory that made shirts for the NFL. He spent a week before the Pats/Packers Super Bowl making up the T-shirts while others took orders on the phone. He got to watch them all get incinerated after the loss:mad:

I think most of us are aware that the printing and planning has to occur for both teams and all sports) well before the game day. No question about that.

Question is whether that printing/planning as it concerns the Pats was discussed much in the public.

Note that most of the fans on this board scroned the Bolts last year (and if I am right, the Steelers a few years back) when reports surfaced that both teams had SB parades planned.

And anyone who scorned the Chargers for doing so probably started following the Patriots after their first or second Super Bowl victory.

Yes, the parades are mentioned by the media. The date is usually revealed by some reporter who calls town hall and asks. This is nothing new, people. I'll say it again cause people seem to be missing this choice piece of information: It is not just planned. A reporter usually always asks the politicians and they admit that it is in the works.

I'd also like to add if people think this has any impact on the outcome of they game, they are living in a strange world....

Incineration makes sense.

But I remember reading somewhere earlier this week (yahoo.com I think) that those T-shirts and other materials, which are owned by the NFL, are shipped to Third World countries.
