That's January in Phoenix from my memory - they do actually get rain there in January and February.

Thank goodness someone had the foresight to think a retractable roof was a good idea if indeed they were going to compete for Super Bowls.

I think I'd read it can be closed in 20 minutes - though I wonder if they'll open it again should the shower and threat of more showers pass.

According to NFL rules, dome can be closed prior to game if forecast is for inclement weather and temps above 80 or below 50. Dome can be closed during a game only by the referees and it can't be re-openned.

If the forecast doesn't change, this game will be indoors, effectively.

Does anyone know if this dome gets hot like was apparently the case in Houston with a closed roof in the SB 38?

it's an understandable mistake. most of us tried to forget it as soon as possible or used various beverages to dim the memory...

When the SB is played in a dome (with a retracable roof), they always leave it closed during the game regardless of the weather. Rain is a non-issue.

that's very helpful. i'm sure that both the League and the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce will want a flawless show so the dome will be closed. If I'm not mistaken, two of the three SB's wins were indoors.

Correct. Super Dome at SB 36 and Reliant Stadium at 38 were indoors.

Everything I've read says the league has complete discretion regarding the roof, although it will likely be opened for halftime regardless of conditions during halftime to accomodate pyrotechnics. There is no 50 degree/80 degree rule, as I understand it.

Once the coin is flipped, however, the roof has to stay in whatever state it's in (e.g., if it's open it cannot be closed or vice versa). You can't give one team an advantage or chance of advantage (e.g., by getting an extra offensive possession in better conditions).

I believe that only 2 games this year in Cardinals Stadium were played with the roof open. It's usually very hot here through November.

I think the roof will be closed. The game will likely be over around 8:30 or 9:00, at which point it will be getting cold.

Incidentally, my guess is that the City of Scottsdale could care less about the Super Bowl, since it will be played about 30 miles outside its borders! :singing:

Assuming you've been to games with the roof closed, is the temperature climate controlled? Not asking for an exact answer -- just your sense. I ask because it seemed to be very hot at Reliant Stadium in SB 38 when they closed that roof.

It's always been extremely comfortable -- feels like 72 degrees.

Understand, though, that's been air conditioning. Usually, it's like 100 degrees outside when they are playing. This will be different -- they may have to heat it, which they never have to do.

Bottom line, however: This venue was built specifically to get on the rotation for super bowls. I have no doubt it will be extremely comfortable in the stadium, particularly given the miserable experience last year.
