For the fourth time this season, New England Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork has been sanctioned by the league, with the latest instance a $5,000 fine for a face-mask penalty in last week's AFC Championship Game victory over the San Diego Chargers.

Wilfork called the fine -- first reported by The Boston Globe and confirmed by league and team sources -- "ridiculous," and suggested he will appeal the punishment.

It seems like the NFL has a vendetta against Wilfork... I've seen MUCH worse things in the NFL that didn't get a penalty...

wow he got a 5k fine for THAT?

that wasn't even that bad of a facemask penalty (i mean it was a 15er but it wasn't fine worthy)

i guess the nfl is trying to send a message to him personally

depends on what they got fined for.

Boy howdy, V-Dubs, you keep getting fined like this and we're gonna have to change your number to 37.

At this rate they'd fine him for jumping offsides. Reason - Defacing integrity of game by breaking rules. $5k.

This is BS...what did it take 7 more horse collars from ROy Williams this year for him to get a fine?

I'm with Vince on this - it's getting ridiculous. He deserved what he got for the finger poke, which was not penalized on the field and was as he said "stupid". And the Losman fine, which was later dropped to $2500, is part of the league's initiative to protect their limited supply of what passes for a QB. I get what they did to Williams to try to get him to stop committing the very foul created by his penchant for tackling via horsecollar.

But this review of the minutae has to stop. Flagrant fouls that are not called on the field or dangerous behavior that isn't caught on the field is one thing. And even egregious infractions called or not that warrant further discipline (like because more than someones feelings got hurt) are one thing. This is nit picking. Why not fine all face masks, or is that next?

I guess the good news is you have to be playing this late to be fined, and your incentives more than cover them...

Wow, if this is the standard now there will be a lot of fines every week next year!

If the running back were taller, Vince would have grabbed a fist full of jersey. He basically stuck his arm out as the RB was going by and snagged the facemask. Yes, it should have been and was a 15 yarder.

Where are all the folks out there who say that the League is favoring the Pats?

i thought the ravens game was actually well called

i mean their own ******ed DC is the one who cost them the game with a timeout on a 4th down play

the real scandolous reffing i've seen in the past few years was sd at indy 2 weeks ago, pats at denver in the 05 playoffs, pitt at indy in the afccg that same playoffs, and of course the pitt seattle superbowl

i think refs are really just crap once you get past hoculi and carey

i think the fact that carey is doing the superbowl will ensure it's really well called, hopefully

Losman, Jacobs and the facemask......What was the fourth fine for?

A scuffle with Witten, I don't remember exactly what happened.
This fine is utterly ridiculous. I try not to be a Pats homer, but plays like this happen what, once a game? I don't see anything about that that is fine-worthy. It's definitely a personal foul, but a lot worse stuff (even done by the Pats) has gone un-fined.

I think evetually, you get a reputation, and they are much quicker to fine. Had this been his "first offense", they'd probably let it slide. He's becoming the Dennis Rodman of the NFL;)

Wilfork fined for facemask call?

WTF. I just read that Vince got fined $5K for the face mask called on him when he got Turner's facemask during the game.

Since when did a face mask, one that did NOT seem intentional, merit a $5K fine. What other players have been fined $5K this year for a face mask penalty?

Personally, I am sick of Goodell's BS with the fines. The guy clearly doesn't know the difference between accidental and intentional.

I also think the fine was overboard, but given Wilfork's history this year I can see Goodell taking the hard view. As to intentional or not, though, it was called as a 15 yard personal foul rather than a 5 yard facemask, so the feeling was that it was intentional. And considering how long he held on, I really can't argue that it wasn't.

They better start fining every player who commits a 15 yard facemasking penalty then.

Why, is every 15 yard facemask the same severity as any other? I'm not so sure...

Should a horse collar tackle made by Roy Williams be treated any more seriously than by someone else?
