Contract signed long enough ago that they expected to renegotiate, but it turns out probably don't have have to.

Brady next year isn't exactly chump change, norminally 14.7M but quite possibly he will have significant LTBE incentives raising that (pro bowl, super bowl etc).

Good QBs aren't cheap.

Thanks Miguel. There are more teams north of 100m than I thought. Looks like we can get down to 100m by losing Eckel's LTBNE's, releasing Stallworth and extending Colvin. That would give us enough money to keep Moss and Gaffney. Probably sign an ILB, and a db (R.Gay or someone else.) A good draft adding some premium defensive talent. And, this run ain't over by a long shot.

By the way, as I understand those numbers:

While it shows total players signed (eg, 63 for Colts(!)), it counts the 'Rule of 51' employed in the offseason, so only the top 51 count against the cap.

Note that only two-three teams are over the projected cap of $116mm.

Indy, with its 63 players and cheaper draft picks coming, can easily make a couple of moves and end up fine. We don't know what their LTBE credit might be.

Carolina could be in trouble, with only 43 players.

Washington - how do you get to $140mm committed? With that team? That's amazing. It could show the inherent problems in trading away draft choices for established veterans, which they do every year and the Pats did in force last year.

but we manage to have fewer players in pocket than almost anyone.
(Pats 43, Panthers 43, Cards 41 ... some have in the 60s.)

We have 2007-2008 incentives to pay for, but we also have unrealized LBTE's to subtract (e,g, Eckel). Also Eckel must now have a high 2008-2009 salary that will not happen. Also, we will not pay Samuel's replacement $7.5M in 2008-2009 cap money, even if the replacement is Samuel.

Note that in addition to the 43, we will also easily sign our ERFA's for cheap and Wright for the RFA second level amount.

In the end, I only care about our cap. I do understand that the colts will be fine under their cap, as they always have been.

Eckle's LTBE's are likely already eaten up with NLTBE's and incentives met elsewhere and tenders. However, I had no trouble coming up with $20M+ in potential cap space (pre adjustments) a while back.

Unless he's a pushover, I wonder why Gaffney wasn't extended in season - unless they don't like him as much as the fans do or his agent is prepping for a FA payday. Stallworth is clearly more gifted athletically, and they may be willing to pay for that as a fallback if Randy can't be retained or develops health or other issues once he's got a ring... Jab does'nt project as a #1b. Washington can't stay as a gunner at the deal he's signed to, so unless they see a WR in practice he will have to restructure or depart. CJ is a wildcard, who knows what his third season will bring...hopefully Bill knows.

The way Maroney is blossoming down the stretch in year two, and the healthy return of Morris along side Faulk and a couple of bowling balls in Evans and Eckle may result in a more balanced yet equally deadly offense for 2008. Bill is always a step ahead of the curve, well except for 2006...

Caps are created to be managed. Brady can withstand another restructure given his $10M 2010 cap hit, as can a few others with some built in valley's, and it's entirely possible they get Tom's retirement deal done this season to really maximize cap space. So you're right, this run ain't over by a long shot.

Quality over quantity, grasshopper. Polian was paying around 15 of those players minimum as they were UDFA's and 2007 draft picks, all of which made his squad. And he doesn't pick in the 2008 draft until the end of the second round. He's got some work to do. They can lose $6M if they let Booger walk, but Manning's cap is getting harder to manage. He's at $18.7M in 2008 and over $21M in 2009. Polian has already dumped money into his voidable years which would become dead cap if he chooses to void them. He can do that again this year to free up space, but then his out years or dead cap become seriously unmanageable. He needs a new deal. And Harrison's cap hit in 2008 is $12M, with roughly the same in dead cap if they cut him (which they won't for that reason). I think they projected him playing well enough through 2008 to make parting more palatable come 2009-2010.

The thing to remember is how many impact roster spots do you need to fill (beyond PS and fodder) assuming we tender some still inexpensive youngsters. We need a starting CB and a nickle CB - one of which could be a first or second round rookie, we need 2 ILB's who could be a $1M veteran like Seau or Bruschi (who I think will be one of them) rotating with a Lua or a day 1 draftee along side AD, we're set on offense although the deck chairs could be reshuffled - remember Stallworth and Washington are locked up and one or both could be cut/swapped in favor of Moss or Gaffney with virtually no 2008 cap impact over their existing cap hits. Aside from that, what are our needs compared to teams who will be watching us on Sunday next...
