Telling: Giants happy after loss to Patriots

I keep hearing about how "upbeat" the Giants were in the lockerroom after their 38-35 loss to the Patriots in the regular-season finale, and how it fueled their playoff run. What does this say about the New Yorkers' mental state? HELLO GIANTS! IT WAS A LOSS, FOLKS! I was at the game and recall the radio broadcaster interviewing players afterward, asking if they felt it was a moral victory staying with the Patriots. Only Strahan and Toomer talked sense claiming there's nothing to rejoice about from a loss.

Arguably, without two personal fouls by the Patriots (Moss's before the kickoff runback and Rodney's during the Giants' last touchdown drive), that game wouldn't have been close. These two teams are on different levels. I think the Giants will play hard in the Super Bowl, but are more happy just to be there while the Patriots are focused on finishing the job they started.

It easily could be a close game, anything can happen in 60 minutes. But I can''t see the Giants winning this one.

That's overstating things just a tad. I was referring only to the Giants.

Sorry. I just don't see it being a close game. Could it be? Sure. Not likely though. These teams ARE on different levels. Don't buy into the hype. IMO, its the classic case of the elephant in the room. The talking heads' job is to maintain interest in the game so they have to keep beating the drum about how the Giants have so much momentum and have such a good chance at winning this game. Truth is they don't. They probably have about a 20% chance. Not good. Chances are the Pats win this game going away and everyone knows it. When the cameras are off they're probably having a good laugh at all of the idiots out there lapping up all their crap. If it were any other market but NY you wouldn't have this fawning all over the Giants and trying to remake a mediocre SB participant look like some world beater.

Of course, Giant fans should get a pass. A fan base has a right to be as delusional as they want where their team is concerned. It happened to us in '85. Hell, I remember singing the damn song and actually believing that we were gonna BERRY Da BEARS!! Riiiiiiiiight!!!

Every good reason for the Giants to be happy after their loss to us because no one gave them a chance and they could have rested everyone to let us walk over them; instead, they gave us a very good fight and in the process, discovered something about themselves and more importantly, gained tremendous confidence that they could hang in there with the best and if possible, get a W.

This is well borne out by the fact that they managed to beat three teams on the road that includes the #1 and #2 ranked NFC teams.

So, I also agree that they are a good team.

But, thanks to the Eagles who surprised us with many quick strategies, I think we will always be vigilant and take nothing for granted.

Plus, given the following general points:
- return of some offensive personnel (who didn't play the Giants in the regular season)
- no particular need to force the ball to Moss
- ideal throwing conditions
- our D's ability to limit the run

I think there are excellent chances of us having a great game.

That said, my concerns:

- will we hold Eli and Plax to insignificant #s?
- how severe is Brady's sprain? Contrary to many of us and the media dismissing the severity because we think that he wouldn't be caught walking in NYC if it was that significant, the fact remains that his throws were off their mark for most part of the AFCCG and it is unclear how much this sprain contributed to it. Think this was also noted by his former QB coach.

Brady was 22-33 in that game, 66 percent. Certainly some of his throws were way off, but your impression just goes to show how amazing he's been this season.

Absolutely! Brady was magnificent this season and hopefully gives another fantastic performance in the SB that gives us a solid W.

Hope my earlier comment on his performance during the AFCCG game is not getting confused as a comment on his season.

I have no problem with the Giants not being unhappy after we beat them. They had a wild card game to play in a week, and the reality is that their loss did not affect the standings or their chance for a championship one bit. But they felt they made significant progress towards being able to win the championship, and subsequent events have proved them right.

You can't say "winning the game is the only thing", that's wrong. Getting to and winning the SB is the "only thing", and given that emotion and motivation plays a large part in football, if they felt the close loss to us helped them then it did.

But that does that mean anything significant at all now? No. Nothing. Neither positive nor negative.

Oh, I don't know. How different is this than when the Pats lost to the Rams in the regular season in 2001? Like the Giants after game 17, the Pats spun that into something positive. And ultimately this lead to a Super Bowl win.
