Joe Montana vs. Tom Brady Statistically

i'll always put brady as #2 all time to montana simply because joe never threw an int in the sb

but brady just has to pass joe in sb wins to move himself to the undeniable #1 spot

Bug Eyes Caldwell. He was Bradys #1 Reciever last year and Caldwell had by far his best season. Guess what he did this season. Nada.

You decide whos a better quarterback when it matters most, its your own personal opinion, but to me its clear who is better. Im sure if you're from Boston, you'll find a way to somehow disagree.

How many Pats fans are going on 49er message boards claiming that Brady is better? What is your point and better yet who cares?

What a DB you are.

The WRs were talented because of Joe Montana.

What's so great about a kicker missing two field goals in the Super Bowl?

Let's give Adam credit for the first Super Bowl, but then afterward he didn't do anything special. Unless you consider missing field goals to be a talent.

Against the Eagles, the Patriots had a 10 point lead in the 4th quarter and sat on it. The GAME WAS OVER!!

Don't forget that pathetic kickoff at the end of the 1st half that gave Carolina another 3 points. With AVERAGE kicker in that Sb, the Pats would have been leading 20-7 at halftime.

Both Montana AND Brady will have thier head/face imaged on a bust in the HOF in Canton and I really don't think its a big deal of who is better

There is no competition in the HOF once you are enshrined nor is there a debate section nor do either care I am sure.

They both deserve it.

Best QB Ever? So many variables from one era to the next how
can you really make a valid conclusion.

Wouldn't be nice if we could just swap the incredible duos and replay
some games with their counterpart teams of other eras.
Maybe then you might know .... who is the best of all time.
Wonder if Montana and Rice could have pulled off 50 TDs and 23 TD
respectively on this Patriots team in this era.
What do ya think?

My first reaction to this post was not to feed a Troll and to ignore it.

But after reading it again, I decided that I found it jejune and sad, and that I suspected that Joe Montana would as well.

It disrespects not only Tom Brady, but Joe Montana as well.

The post shows an amazingly immature lack of understanding of the respect in which fans of Tom Brady hold Joe Montana, who was, indeed, Brady's own idol growing up (he often tells the story of witnessing "Montana to Clark" and of what that day meant to him).

There is no need for trash talk like this about "Brady vs. Montana." They played in different eras (pre and post cap/Free Agency--Montana played on teams that could afford to surround him with as many as nine All Pro players; the 2001 team which Brady led to SB victory had just two). Comparisons will, therefore, always be fraught with difficulty and certtainly are out of place when done in this manner.

Finally, the poster says "to me its clear who is better." Frankly, dear Troll, it doesn't matter who you or I think is better. That judgment will be made ten or so years from now when the body of Brady's work in the NFL is complete and it will be made by people who know the game far better than you or I.

For now, like most knowledgeable fans, I'm content to agree with anyone who would say that Joe Montana is the greatest QB of all time, that Tom Brady is among the greatest QB's of all time and that one day people will decide which was "the greatest."

One flaw,

What will make Tom Brady the BEST EVER, is that, when they do with the Super Bowl, HE, and HE alone, will be the ONLY Quarterback with the talent and skill, to EVER, EVER lead a team to an undefeated season, which no other QB in football history, could ever dream and imagine doing, going 19-0 which is the ULTIMATE STAT that is going to matter, better than Bradshaw, better than Montana, 4 rings or 5 rings, or even 6 rings...

The fact when Brady gets his 4th ring next weekend, ENSURES his status as the NFL's ALL TIME GREATEST QB EVER, to accomplish what he did, in so little time, with his skill and talent, that not even Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Elway, Farve, Aikman, etc... and Terry Bradhsaw, all could not lead, lead their team, to simple pure perfection...yet they all blew games where they lost games during the regular seasons, by not maintaining CONSISTENCY for 19 straight games, through injury, and backups and the like.....JO eMontana had flashes of Brilliance on his way to 4 Rings....but TOM BRADy was and has been CONSISTENT ALL YEAR ROUND 19-0 (assuming they win), which can never be questioned ever...

So, Joe Montana can have the Better stats in SB wins...but what SEPARATES TOM BRADY ALL ALONE FOREVER....FOREVER, is being the ONLY QB GOOD ENOUGH to lead his team and go UNDEFEATED to 19-0 (not 17-0 of the Dolphins), which right there being 19-0, Catapults him to the Stratosphere as being the BEST EVER...FOR EVER AND EVER! :rocker: :rocker: :rocker:

Montana was a great QB, no question about it.
But he also enjoyed a much stronger receiving corps than Brady until 2007.
Montana had HOF targets like Jerry Rice and Taylor to throw to.
Deion Branch is a marginal #1 WR, who has never cracked 1,000 yards receiving in his whole career.

Look at what Brady has done with real receivers like Moss, Stallworth, and Welker now.
50 TDs vs 8 INTs , 4,800 passing yards, and a 117.2 QB rating

Oh yes, and there is the matter of Brady's playoff record-breaking 26 for 28 performance for a 93% passing percentage against the Jaguars along with a new playoff game high QB rating.

Nobody's disrespecting old Joe here. But you're in the wrong house if you think you can come in here and tear down what Brady has accomplished. Brady's career is far from over, and when he finally hangs em up, who knows, he might have more rings to polish than old Joe. Then the debate begins in earnest.

Hey Gold Miner, remember that season with the 9ers when Montana won the Super Bowl WITHOUT awesome talent surrounding him at every skill position??? Neither do I.

Wow. How arbitrary. I like Brady better because he wins more, he's not an a-hole to his successor, and he doesn't try to charge the NFL an "appearance fee" that all the other Super Bowl MVPs waived BECAUSE IT WAS AN HONOR TO BE ASKED.

Joe Montana is truly a great QB who is also truly a FRAUD in the "not a jerk" department.

Right. A touchdown at the end of the game counts for two wins, while a FG only counts for one. Little known football fact.

So Montana fell behind more and needed to score 7 vs. Brady needing only 3. This makes Montana better?

So the thread should really be, "Who had better stats in the super bowl?" Hats off to Montana, who was amazing.

Now that Brady's teammates are up to his level, it would be interesting to compare Montana's best season to Brady's best. Did Montana have more than 50 TDs in a regular season (and feel free to divide total by number of games to make it fair)? An undefeated season?

I agree that SB performance is a great indicator. It will be interesting to see how TB does this weekend.

85 17-3 Loss NYG 26/47 0 TD 1 INT
86 49-3 Loss NYG 8/15 98 Yards 296 Yards 0 TD 2 INT
87 36-24 Loss Minn 12/26 109 Yards 0 TD 1 INT

First round exits three years in a row during the heart of his career.

Okay, this is one of the silliest threads I've ever seen.

Guys, this is good stuff when you're drunk off your ass with a 9ers fan in a bar, but we're sober. What the hell is the draw?

Joe: Great. Tom: Great. You really think a 'fins fan believes Montana was better than The Ringless One? You really think a Denver fan believes he's better than Elway?

This will never be settled, end of story. But I do like the idea of the 19-0 season, and another back-to-back run (or better yet, threepeat,) to help make the case.

For all the people who love to compare Montana and Brady, heres some stats Im sure all you great fans already know. People say Brady is as good as Montana, has better statistics, lets see who REALLY has better stats when the game matters most. (having your kicker finish what you started doesnt count, thanks.)

Joe Montana

Super Bowl XXIV (1990)
Stats: 22-29, 297 yards, 5 TD, 0 interceptions in a 55-10 win over Broncos.
Montana was spectacular in winning his third Super Bowl MVP, throwing for a then-record five TDs and completing 76 percent of his passes against a Broncos team that boasted the top scoring defense in the NFL that season.

Super Bowl XIX (1985)
Stats: 24-35, 331 yards, 4 TD (1 rush), 0 interceptions in 38-16 win over Dolphins.
Montana beat Dan Marino and the Dolphins through the air with three touchdowns and another score on the ground. His 59 yards rushing were more than San Francisco star running back Roger Craig had.

Super Bowl XXIII (1989)
Stats: 23-36, 357 yards, 2 TD, 0 interceptions in 20-16 win over Bengals.
Montana's second TD pass was the game winner, a 10-yard strike to John Taylor with 34 seconds left. San Francisco dominated offensively, outgaining the Bengals 453 yards to 229.

Super Bowl XVI (1982)
Stats: 14-22, 157 yards, 2 TD (1 rush), 0 interceptions in 26-21 win over Bengals.
Yes, this is the fourth time that Montana has appeared on this list -- it certainly says a lot that he has one-sixth of the best 24 performances by a Super Bowl quarterback. Montana's steady hand in this game -- his first Super Bowl appearance -- earned him MVP.

Tom Brady

Super Bowl XXXVIII (2004)
Stats: 32-48, 354 yards, 3 TD, 1 interception in 32-29 win over Panthers.
Brady outdueled Jake Delhomme with a Super Bowl-record 32 completions. He led the drive that set up Adam Vinatieri's game-winning field goal with four seconds remaining.

Super Bowl XXXIX (2005)
Stats: 23-33, 236 yards, 2 TD, 0 interceptions in 24-21 win over Eagles.
Brady had another near-flawless performance in the Patriots' most recent Super Bowl crown, but it was wide receiver Deion Branch (11 catches, 133 yards) who was named MVP.

Super Bowl XXXVI (2002)
Stats: 16-27, 145 yards, 1 TD, 0 interceptions in 20-17 win over Rams.
New England's defense stood out, but Brady orchestrated the drive at the end of the game to set up Adam Vinatieri's game-winning field goal as time expired for the upset win. Brady completed 5 of 6 passes on the winning 53-yard drive

You decide whos a better quarterback when it matters most, its your own personal opinion, but to me its clear who is better. Im sure if you're from Boston, you'll find a way to somehow disagree.

NOTE* In four Super Bowl appearances Montana had 13 TD's (2 of which he rushed in himself) and 0 INT's. Brady in 3 had 6 TD's, and 1 INT.

Feeling a little defensive aren't you?:D

Former NFL players are saying it as much as any else.:D

Tom Brady postseason record: 14-2, 0 one and dones.
Joe Montana postseason record: 16-7 (14-5 w/ 49ers), 3 one and dones

On a side note, I never realized that Joe Montana only played a complete season 4 times in his career. He also never threw over 4000 yards, and probably only would have in 1 season had he played a complete season.

This is a bullshyt comparison. When Montana was Brady's age he only had 2 rings. Brady already has 3 and is working on 4.

Give him a few more years and there will be no comparison.
