....on Superbowl Sunday....and some other assorted thoughts, because I'm already so BORED waiting for this freakin' game to happen! ;)

1. I desperately want to LOSE... the coin toss. The more I see the games unfold, the more I am CONVINCED that having the ball to start the 2nd half is an advantage. I've already gven the reasons several times so I won't waste your time repeating all of them, but I will mention one that is specific to THIS game.

With all the hoopla and a Giants team with NO superbowl experience, it will be very difficult to put together an effective offensive drive at the start of the game, when they will be SOOOO amped up. On the other hand, being THAT amped up could be an advantage if they start on defense. I could be wrong, but I don't remember a lot of scoring on opening drives in the Superbowl. It takes a bit of time for the offenses to get settled down. Suffice it to say, that I would feel relieved if we started the game kicking off.

2. On defense I want to see more of the trap type coverages which were so effective against the Colts in 2003 & 2004. To be more specific, coverages that provide tight coverage in the short zones and opportunities for turnovers when routes are read correctly.

This is just ONE example. At the snap the defensive front rushes 4 or 5 to signal immediate pressure to the QB. The CB jumps to the LOS to provide IMMEDIATE phyisical pressure to the WR (ie Burress). The CB then releases the WR to a rotating S, after about 5-7 yds and jumps the underneath short route.

Now here's the trap. If the QB, feeling the pressure, throws to his hot receiver in the flat, the result is a shot at pick, or at worst a short gain. However if the QB thinks he sees the CB on his flat receiver, he will know to throw to the deep out underneath the rotating S. What Law did so well vs Manninng was to read the QBs eyes and drop off the short man and get UNDERNEATH the deep out for the pick. Law litterally 'trapped' Manning into throwing the deep out.

Now this is just one example of a trap coverage that uses more pressure and tighter coverages than the Pats have shown lately. There is an INFINITE world of additional coverages that could be explained. The point is that THIS game would be a great time to bring some of them out against a relatively inexperienced QB who has a history of getting confused vs pressure, even if its only PERCEIVED pressure.

3. Now this will be a shock to those who read my missives, but I REALLY want to see SEVERAL Play Action Passes (PAP) this game. We have a legitimate explosive running threat, and strong running OL, and an extremely DANGEROUS set of WRs. Isn't this the perfect situation to run PAPs. Now I may seem to be stating the obvious, but somehow the memo hasn't gotten to Josh.

Most people think that bootleg action requires a running threat from the QB position, but not really. It is a great way for team to break keys and create holes in a secondary. If only ONE person makes a miss stet it can create huge gaps in the secondary. IMHO, Brady would be able to do damage to the Giant's seconday off the Bootleg action, especially since he hasn't done it yet IIRC.

The PAP off the stretch, or power plays is another difficult read for a defense. I think the PAP off the power play will be more effective in THIS game, since I think the Pats will want to run INSIDE the DE, to take advantage of the outside rush. This will be especially effective against Osi.

Another great one is the fake power and the pass to the FB in the flat or seam. We haven't shown this much this year, and will be even more effective given Maroney's recent running success.

4. As in the last game, I want to see Maroney more active in the passing game. I want to see swing passes and delays to go along with the usual screen passes. The Giants (by tendency) will be ready for passes to a RB when Faulk is in there, and runs/screens with Maroney. I want to take advantage of that prior tendency.

5. I want to see some motions from Moss that will make it easier for him to get quick releases of the LOS. I also want to see him attacking the deep middle and their safeties, rather than the sidelines and and their CBs. Though I don't think EITHER of their CBs can match speed with Randy.... their Safeties are even slower. Either way I think this will be a big game for Moss.

6. The Giants CAN'T win unless they get at least one special teams TD. They got one last time they played, and it can't happen again. I want to see the same great coverage that we got against the Chargers...who had a better returner. All I want from the Pat's return teams is NOT to FUMBLE. Any return yardage is just plain gravy IMHO. Getting special teams TO's is the other way the GIants can stay in this game.

Those are the specific things I'd like to see the Pats do on game day. It will be interesting to see how many come to pass. Now what is your list of things YOU'D like to see.?

GENERAL THOUGHTS... for a bye week that may or may not have any interest

1. Conspiracy Theories:
a. I don't think BB concocted Brady's "high ankle". I DO think that he might be taking advantage of it by holding out Brady from any of the team's practices until they get to Arizona.

Now I don't think that BB is thinking that anyone will believe that Brady won't be playing in the game. No, I'm thinking he's doing it for the "little guy". I think he feels badly that Pats bettors have been 2-7 in the last 9 games, and he wants to drop the odds a bit to give all the Pats supporters a better chance to get their money back.

Now what OTHER HC would be that conciderate, compassionate, and caring. It doesn't hurt the teams chances of winnning. Besides it will definitely give the media something else to focus on rather than Moss' hearing and spygate. AND gives BB additional chances to tweak the media pukes for a few days with his cryptic and ambiguous responses to their inane questions.

2. Like I predicted the media focus on the Giants is in full swing. It seems every show has lined up a Giant as an in studio guest, with corresponding "analysts, that hype the Giants momentum and the fact that Eli has a better QB rating than Brady. Meanwhile any Pats coverage is religated to the stock interviews in the Pats lockerroom, in which the Pats players give their best imitation of BB's party line....in other words....NOTHING of interest.

On the other hand, with the instudio Giants players, experienced interviews like Bob Costas can manipulate the inexperienced GIants players into making provocative remarks like the Osi did on HBO. It also serves a dual purpose of putting the Pats into a BAD light. (BTW- its not like Osi is a friend of mine, but I have NO chance of coming close to spelling his last name. ;) )

3. Speaking of that, even though its been proven ON FILM that Seymour didn't do anything of the things that the Hartwick claimed, its still being reported as if it were fact. Also the Packer claims that the Giants were the dirtiest team in the league has been completely ignored. Only the Pats do dirty things. Clearly the Good v Evil story is being ramped up again, especially by the NY media. I'm sure it is ironically satisfying that a NY team is being pictured as the "little engine that could", rather than the "evil empire" that MOST NY teams get when they are successful.

So be prepared for that tactic to be in full force next week. Remember the truth and fair play won't be factors in their reporting. Don't forget that its "all about them", and shaping the story to the message THEY think will sell, which is much more important than what is actually going to happen on the field.

4. I'm already tired of the ramp up to the Superbowl. If the game were THIS Sunday it couldn't happen soon enough. BUT NOOOOOOOOOOO!, its a WEEK from Sunday.... and a six oclock start to boot. The 2 week wait is great for the teams, and I guess the media loves it because it give them 2 weeks to create content. But for the fan, its like slow torture.

OK, I'll stop here. If I make it much longer many might refuse to read it all, and since I have 10 more days until the game, I'd be better served saving some stuff for later in the week. Enjoy....I hope. :D

Re: Things I want to see.....

I want to win the coin toss and never look back.

A also want the defense to execute whatever scheme Bill believes his 2008 personnel are capable of executing that will prevent the Giants from scoring more than 17-20 points.

And I hope that the ST coverage unit brings their A game.

I want Brady to methodically take what the Giants defense gives us.

I guarantee you BB could care less about point spreads.

I don't really care if people like us or pick us because I do, and I accept their jealousy of or boredom with us for what it is.

All I want to see is a win - don't care how, those kinds of minutae are better left to profesionals.

Re: Things I want to see.....

With our newfound running game, I am confident we'll see some play action. We have the best yards per attempt on play action, it just so happened last week the SD has the best yards per attempt defensively on play action.

Quit with the "lost the coin toss" thing, please. Sure I like getting the ball to start the second half but I want the lead from the beginning. We've been down in each of the two playoff games so far and I would prefer to never be trailing this time.

My reactions:

1. I desperately want to LOSE... the coin toss.

Didn't the Bears win the coin toss and start on defense in the Super Bowl against the Pats? Teams have done that. I think maybe Baltimore did as well. But pretty unlikely for the Pats to do it if they win.

2. On defense I want to see more of the trap type coverages which were so effective against the Colts in 2003 & 2004.
Not just Law, but Samuel has become accomplished at this. He has done this a number of times the past two years. He has also occasionally guess wrong, fallen off his guy to break on the out, only to see the ball go over his head. Having seen Manning a couple times, Samuel is likely to try this. But they know we know...

3. Now this will be a shock to those who read my missives, but I REALLY want to see SEVERAL Play Action Passes (PAP) this game.
I totally agree. The Pats offense looked very predictable, based on formation, last week.

4. As in the last game, I want to see Maroney more active in the passing game.
Agree. We need to run a bit out of passing formations, and pass a lot more out of running formations.

5. I want to see some motions from Moss that will make it easier for him to get quick releases of the LOS.
Our receivers should have a big advantage on this secondary.

6. The Giants CAN'T win unless they get at least one special teams TD.
The Pats coverage has been very very good, in general. That one Giants TD was an aberration.

1. Conspiracy Theories:
a. I don't think BB concocted Brady's "high ankle". I DO think that he might be taking advantage of it by holding out Brady from any of the team's practices until they get to Arizona.

I disagree - Belichick would have Brady practice if he could practice. However, post-Ted Johnson, I'll bet they are more sensitive to the input from the trainer. Further, we know Brady wants to practice.

Totally disagree. Belichick hates gamblers. He hates them to the point that I have wondered if he knew people who lost homes or jobs. He withholds injury information, and gets ugly if you ask him about covering the line.

2. Like I predicted the media focus on the Giants is in full swing. It seems every show has lined up a Giant as an in studio guest, with corresponding "analysts, that hype the Giants momentum and the fact that Eli has a better QB rating than Brady.

Right. Let the Giants get some attention. Nothing to see here. No disrespect intended. Move along.

I always want the ball to start the second half. Always. There's always the possibility of either back-to-back scores to put the game away, if you go in with the lead and come out and score there's added pressure on the opponent, or if you are down and then have the ball and score, you can change that momentum. Look at what the opening drive of last year's AFCCG did for Indy.

That is always my strategy, bar none.

Agreed. Special Teams has to have another solid game. They cannot give the Giants a short field or give up another TD on a kick-off or punt return.

I'm with you, Ken, on this one. I much prefer to have the ball starting the 2nd half. It almost always gives you the wind in the 4th quarter as well (not that that will matter in this game. :) )

I still believe the Patriots will score first even if they kick off.

1. I desperately want to LOSE... the coin toss.
I'm really not sure it matters because I think this game will be over by halftime. I do agree, however, that putting Eli out there first while he's all charged up mihgt lead to a turnover. If I'm Coughlin I probably just have him hand off those first few plays.

6. The Giants CAN'T win unless they get at least one special teams TD. They got one last time they played, and it can't happen again. I agree. The Giants special team is a WEAKNESS. They are ranked #28 in the league. Their punter is older than the Cryptkeeper on HBO, Feely has far less leg than Ghost, and they don't have anyone to match Kelly Washington (not many teams do). In addition, as has been mentioned, the Hixon KR TD in week 17 probably doesn't happen w/out the penalty. Very doubtful it happens again. Pats should have a huge field position advantage throughout because of this ST mismatch.

Those are the specific things I'd like to see the Pats do on game day. It will be interesting to see how many come to pass. Now what is your list of things YOU'D like to see.?

a). I want to see some early pressure on Manning to try to get him to make a mistake. Let's introduce him to Rodney before the fourth quarter. I'd like to see a couple of blitzes, particularly on on third down.

b). Either that, or, I'd like to see us double Plaxico so he doesn't get in a rythm early like he did in GB. IMO, like TO in the Dallas game, there will be an ego factor at work here. Plaxico recognizes he is on the same field as Moss and that everyone will be comparing them all day. That's why I think Eli will be looking to get the ball to him early and often. If it happens, and we play him tight, Eli might try to force one into him despite the coverage and we have a good chance at the turnover.

c). On Offense, I want us to spread them out like we did against Washington. They will be afraid to get beat deep and the quick slants and screens (when pressured) and intermediate routes will most likely be there.

d). I don't want to see Hansen on the field at all in the first half. I'm looking for several of those long, methodical drives down the field culminating in points on several straight possessions in the first half.

e). I want to see a TD to either Troy Brown or Junior Seau. Use Vrabel as the decoy this time. He's had his share of SB TD's already.

Great post Ken.

I'd like to see more screen passes. These guys are going to be blitzing alot. Maroney will shread them with screens. That should slow the blitz down enough for Tom to get a good look downfield.

Couldn't agree more. It seems obvious to me that getting the ball in the 2nd half is ALWAYS preferable.

You get a chance at an extra possession. Coaches have their reasons, but I ALWAYS take the second half.

Exactly they know that Samuel likes to poach. They baited him last game with a pump fake to the shorter receiver and then burned him on the deep receiver that he was supposed to be staying with. I fully expect them to try it again because Asante still wants to go chase the INTs and not just wait for the ones that come his way.
So will Asante stay at home or continue to be undisciplined?

Giants scored on their first posession in week 17, we didn't score on the first posession of the second half. We were down 12 for much of the 3rd quarter and didn't score in the second half until 4 minutes before the 4th quarter. Ya, lets go that route again...

Two things will rattle Eli - being behind and facing an effective pass rush. I'd like to see him rattled early and often.

Bingo......

I think Brady does indeed have some type of (probably minor) injury. But, I think BB and maybe TB both realized it would be a great decoy story if only to keep Randy out of the news. It worked like a charm. Wouldn't surprise me, either, for Brady to do something like this knowing it would help out a teammate.

I'm confused now. Can someone give be a definitive answer on the coin toss. Is it, like some people in the thread imply, if you win the coin toss, you have te right to defer to the second half, or can you opt to just KO and get the ball in the 2nd half, or is it you either KO or receive and the loser of the coin toss get his choice in the 2nd half????

BTW- on of the things I didn't mention that I wanted to put in under the general observations, what that the ONE person we lost that I wish we kept was Ty Law, especially the last couple of years. He would be the physical CB that reads so well, and has the hands to run trapping defenses all over the field. He along with Samuel would be a very difficult two-some to contend with. Also it would mean that Hobbs would have been the nickel back where his quickness is a virtue and his size wouldn't matter as much. Better for him and better for us.

Also if Chad Scott had not gotten hurt, HE might have been the big CB to play the old Otis Smith role, while the speedy Samuel took the deep threat, and Hobbs would be on the slot man. Too Bad. It would have been much better.

i'd like to use your thread ken, to ask if anyone has seen a team use a defense in which the olb lines up intentionally across from the #1 receiver on obvious passing downs and blasts the wr before handing him off to the db lined up in soft zone--thereby blowing up the route before moving to containment/qb rush

for example, every obvious passing play, have vrabel or thomas knock burress on his ass and then rush from the perimeter after the initial hit--this should cause sufficient disruption to cause elly to go after hot reads and check downs--which plays into an opportunitic defense's favor...
