I remember reading an article saying that he was draft mostly for his athleticism since in Georgia he really didn't have jaw-dropping stats. I don't know what BB ever really thought he could get out of Ben. He's made some awesome catches and drops some easy ones...inconsistent at best. He needs the David Givens juggs machine workout this off-season.

On a side note, anyone remember Dave Thomas? I see and have seen a lot of the Texas Longhorn games out here and this guy was a grade A stud. If he can stay health, I think he is better than Watson in 2 years.

They say guys that never fill there potential are dissapointments or busts. Not saying watson is a bust. Just saying.

he is what he is i dont think he gets better alot of drops and balls of his hands

If he can develop blocking skills similar to the way Shockey did in NY lined up with a healthy Dave Thomas and either Maroney or a healthy Sammy Morris carrying the ball, I dare say, "Look the **** out!"

I don't think he's a natural receiver....when he's open, he's great. Can he make those over the shoulder running catches in traffic? Not sure.

Athletic enough to get open so he's better than most.

Actually, Ben really isn't that bad, his biggest problem is that he kills drive with his drops. It just seems he drops a lot of 3 down and TD passes. Also, he is awful with the ball in his hands. His YAC has to be the worst on the team.

All that being said, he has to be accounted for. He's not Gates, Heap, or Gonzalez, but he's definitely in the next tier of TE's. He gets open well enough, and will make the majority of his catches. He's a decent (not great) blocker too. All in all, he fits our system pretty well.

I think he has all the talent in the world, and is a really smart kid which is what led BB to conclude that 2 + 2 would eventually = 4. I think what flumoxes him is he doesn't think on his feet. He gets it on paper and has the skill set to execute it on the field but he can't seem to consistently seemlessly mesh the two aspects of the game. If at some point the lightbulb goes fully on, and he can relax and execute without thinking, he will be a beast.

I'd still take him over the over rated Shockey any day. His injury was addition by subtraction for the Giants.

I remember hearing Russ Francis once talk at length last year about how Watson struggles coming off the ball and how that half step he loses there negates his pure athleticism edge on most patterns that tight ends run.

That one call doesn't even come close to negating all the "insert head up *****" statements he's made in the past.

Here's a few:

Bill Belichick fired Charlie Weis last offseason during the time when his agent said he wouldn't be coming back, but the Krafts made Belichick take Weis back...

- Romeo Crennel "hates" Belichick, but is too classy to say anything.

- Evidence of this hate is in the Browns' signing Andruzzi to hurt the Patriots.

- Derrick Mason didn't sign here because "so many" Patriots players told him he would never get his money because the Patriots cheat their players on money.

- Borges was offended that Belichick canceled a dinner appointment with new Globe writer Jerome Solomon at the Indy combine. Belichick apparently called Solomon and said he was too tired to meet him. Borges: “Here’s a guy who’s supposedly a workaholic, but now he’s too tired to eat?”

- Not surprisingly, Borges thought the Pats won’t be able to replace Patten, Brown, Andruzzi, etc. He offered a bizarre analogy. He said it’s like when a Fortune 500 company lets all their employees go, and then suddenly the company isn’t successful anymore. Makes sense to me.

Not to mention that he said drafting Richard Seymour was a waste of a 1st round draft pick by BB.

Not to hijack this thread, but I love watching Bob Sanders play. That being said, his size and style of play will shorten his career. I think within 3 years, Sanders will be more hurt than not.

If they could find him a pair of hands he would be awesome. He's probably the most athletic player on the team, he just needs to learn how to harness his ability.

On a side note he missed a backside block on Phillips sometime in the second half (i believe) which cost Maroney an extra ten yards or so. That seemed to be a lack of concentration on his part because it was just a straight ahead block.

This thread was not ment to bash him at all. Infact I think he is great, I also think injuries have killed him production wise. Other than that the guys talent is so great that Im just excited to have him on or team and not the other way around

Watson had a TD a couple years ago that was just sick--showed up his strength, speed, just an amazing play. To me, he just seems to lack a nasty edge at times--he plays almost too passively in a way.

Last year Watson had NO ONE helping keep pressure off of him and was still able to have a very good year. Try to keep in mind that Defenses KNEW that 90% of the time the ball would be going to him or Caldwell last year, and they kept guys draped all over them.

This year Watson has the exact opposite problem - Moss, Welker and others are getting the vast majority of passes thrown their way. I'd be surprised if he saw half as many passes coming his way this season... and with only 12 games he still put up decent numbers.

Additionally, I sense that this season has seen him improve his blocking skills as he hasn't been looked to as the go to receiver he was last year - and that all bodes well for his continued evolution into a complete TE.

He's doing fine for my money. There simply aren't enough footballs to go around, but when he is called upon he gets the job done. He's blocking most of the time, and he's great at that. As far as stats go, he's at about 40% of what he could do if he was put in a Gates type role, but in our system the Tight end doesn't get as many thrown to him when Moss and Welker are on the team.

I always hear Watson is fast as WRs but when he is running with football after catch, he always seem to get caught from behind by linebackers. I agree this guy looks like million bucks and from time to time, he has shown flashes of greatness but when I watch him play, I feel like pulling out all my hair! He is so inconsistent and will few key passes per game. I agree that he has developed into solid blocker and I hope he builds on to become better TE. Dave Thomas on the other hand was really promising when healthy. He made some really tough catches when he is out on the field. Only if he can stay healthy....I actually miss Ben Coates.
