I've been fustrated with the vanilla type defense as of late, maybe except against the chargers, I would like to see the defense pressure the qb unresently. Would BB blitz Eli like he did McNaab?

me too...as the losses have piled up, i've been calling for Dean Pees to step down...

I'm just saying I would like to see the pats pressure the qb more than they have recently. Who knows what could have happen to the outcome of last weekend game had the bend-but-dont-break- strategy failed or had the chargers not stumble in the redzone. All I'm saying is lets not make things difficult for ourselves. BB has proven that with disguised blitz, he can own any offense in the league so I don't understand why he doesn't bring the heat. Heck we saw the ravens stall the last few drives after BB decided to apply pressure.

Pats D has been vanilla for three quarters the last few games and started blitzing in the fourth. Perhaps BB will turn them loose early and see if we can rattle Eli, get some turnovers, and get up on them quickly.

If you go back to week 17, BB held off on blitzing until the second half, when he had to to secure the game. At the time, it did cross my mind that he might not want to give too much away in case they met in the Super Bowl. Either way, there's nothing left to 'give away' at this point. Eli proved in week 17 that he couldn't handle NE's bliztes, so yeah, I think we'll see more of them than we're used to.

On a side note, how can you complain about a defense that didn't give up a touchdown in the AFCCG?

It didn't fail. It bent, but didn't break. That's kinda the point.

Thats my point, why play vanilla (allowing the opposing offense to move at will) for three quarters only to blitz (stop the opposing offense) in the fourth. In my opinon, BB should blitz from start to end (if the game isn't over at half)

The Pats D is whatever it needs to be for that game. It's really that simple. It's not a run-stopping D...but it can be. It's not a pressure the QB D but it can be...

See what I'm getting at?

There's little reason to change much. I don't care about yards/gm but yards alllowed per pass attempt is an important stat and we're 7th best in the league. I know the pass defense looks shaky at times - but it is a top 25% pass defense.

because--if you play like that from the beginning, you give the other team far more time to adjust and get comfortable with the exotic packages and looks--the premise of the D is to take away the other team's strongest weapon and force them to be one-dimensional--it was not devised to be sexy, but effective. the adjustments--the clampdown if you will, is usually when the other team is down and needs to press to score--that plays into the defensive philosophy--the run is often abandoned and the blitz packages and exotic coverage looks are shuttled in

it just doesn't work the same to do it early in the game

I don't see BB personally blitzing, though if he gets one he'll completely pancake Eli.

well then how do you explain Eli's Joe Montane esque performances for 3 quarters if the pats d responsibility is to adapt accordingly with the current situation. when eli drove down the field 1st,2nd,3rd,etc drive, why didn't the pats d conform into in a blitz d since thats what it needed to be obviously?

A lot of what I've read is that the Patriots Defense has played more of their exotic defenses in between the 20s and then started going to more of a man-up coverage/blitz defense in the red area.

I don't like seeing teams rack up the yards moving the ball on them but when you look at at how few big plays for points the Pats gave up this year it means that what they are doing is working.

They're 27th in the league in red zone scoring but what, 2nd, in the league in scoring allowed? That means they are making teams work for their points which is exactly what BB wants.

First off, no offense moves 'at will' against the Pats' D.
Secondly, a lot of successful first half blitz packages get neutralized by halftime adjustments.
By playing vanilla in the first half, BB doesn't give the opposing coaches much to adjust to, and the opposing offense is pretty much always completely unprepared when the D really opens up.

Additionally, blitzing rarely in the first half keeps your speed guys from getting too tired too soon.

Add those two factors together and I think it explains a lot of why the Pats' D seems to be able to flip a switch and become dominant in the 3rd, and especially the 4th, quarter.

Why give away any more of your blitz schemes than you have to? While I don't think we'll blitz the whole game I do think we'll see alot more of it this game.

You mean to tell me BB will present the same look each time he calls for pressure.

Marvelous. This forum, as well as the MSM, has been a projective psychological test for anxiety. Perfect season. Any questions? If our boys lost the Superbowl, it will not be for any reason we can understand now. They are simpy marvelous (and I went to Baltimore for my boys -- and they still pulled it out).

The Pats D was concerned mostly with stopping the run and the game was manageable up until the 4th quarter when the needed big-time stops. The D let the offense score 22 unanswered points. Where's the problem?

That's the kind of confidence BB has in his players, team and coaching staff.
