So, the Jags and Bolts decided to clamp down on Moss. How does Josh get Randy favorable matches vs Giants ? Outside of the 65yd bomb, they too held Randy in check (35 yds rest of the game)

Not sure how athletic the Giants secondary is to shutdown Moss, and make Brady goto Welker, Stall and others.

The strategy being employed by opposing D is to make the Pats work to get the TD's, thus shorten the game and score. So, the key in the SB is to jump on the Giants early. Does that mean play action to get Moss open ?

They might be happy to let RM draw the additional attention and just take advantage of any lapses in coverage. It'll be a lot more difficult to contain the Pats in perfect game conditions.

Re: How will Josh get Moss open ?

I'd like them to find more ways to get Moss involved.
For example there was that one play against the Chargers where they let Moss run it on a trick play and he gained like 20 yards or so.
I'd like Moss to get involved early just to get him on the Giants' mind.
That will open up the rest of the offense imo.

I can't get into the Giants' defense but Football Outsiders shows the Giants ranked #21 in the league against #1 WR so the opportunities should be there - if not they'll have to overplay him. The Giants rank well against #2 and lower WR but #31 against TE. The Jags and SD were ranked #13 and #7 vs. #1 WR.

Using more normal stats, the NYG pass defense is fairly leaky. They rank #18 in YPA. Interestingly, using this quality not quantity stat, the Patriots pass defense which has seemed quite leaky to us ranks #7. SD ranked #8.

Looking at yards allowed per pass, I don't have FO's complete list but Cromartie allowed 7.8 per pass which ranked 51st in the league - that is comparable to the NYG CB. Dockery ranks well, the others range from 7.2 to 9.3.

I guess the bottom line like always is - if we protect Brady there's all kinds of yards and scores waiting for us; the Giants' secondary is OK but not at all great.

Re: How will Josh get Moss open ?

The Jags had Mathis and the Chargers had Jammer and Cromartie. The Giants have an old Sam Madison, a young gun in Aaron Ross, and a bunch of JAGs, plus two terrible safeties.

I can see us going back to the few gadget plays we tried to use to get moss downfield against the cowboys. flea flicker anyone?

Motion off the LOS?

I'd also add play action. Especially now that we have a strong running game.

Going into last week the Patriots' offense ranked #1 (Football Outsiders stats) in yards gained per pass on play action. However we didn't run any as the Chargers' defense also ranked #1 vs. play action.

I don't have the numbers on the NYG but assuming they aren't right at the top with SD in play action defense, that's a strong weapon for us that was negated by last week's opponent.

You know what? I think Moss can get open when he really WANTS to get open. It all depends on how many times a game he can bring himself to put out supreme effort. We've seen him beat double and even triple coverage (re., first Jets game) when he applies himself. He needs a couple triple espressos before the Super Bowl, maybe that would help.

Re: How will Josh get Moss open ?

I think Moss will get open as he runs a difficult route at an angle... The Jags and Chargers corners are better than the Giants in covering him.

That being said, if he cuts and runs hard, he will get open and I'm sure BB is already charting plays for him where he can get wide open for the quick TD runs. If they double team him, he will draw coverage and Brady can throw to Donte or Wes or even Watson... There are just too many options for TB on offense and I think we'll see a lot of short plays, with a strike by Moss for the TD

Re: How will Josh get Moss open ?

I think we do what we do. It has gotten us to 18-0.
I would be surprised and upset if we create a gampelan that says winning with Moss getting the ball is better than winning without Moss getting the ball.

We will do what we do, and how many times Moss gets thrown to will be determined by THE GIANTS, not by the Patriots.
I suspect the success in the running game we have been having will set up the opportunity for us to use it a little more early in the game to make the Giants more concerned with defending the run. That will create room for all of the WRs, and even more for the others if the Giants are intent on removing Moss.

I don't care if Moss catches 20 passes or is a decoy that is never looked at by Brady, winning is the only thing that matters.

Josh only needs to get one man open...

I think this has more to do with it than anything else. In the regular season, Brady was throwing to Moss even though he had coverage on him since there was a bit more margin for error. I really don't think that there's been much change to the way teams are trying to shut Randy down, it's just that at this stage of the playoffs (lose and go home), Tom is probably not going to take the chance. If there's someone else who's more open than Moss, that's where the ball is going.

Moss obviously still has the skills to go up for the ball in traffic and if the Pat's get up by a couple of scores early in the SB, then I'd imagine we'll see Brady taking some shots at Moss even though he's not completely wide open.

Whatever gets them the win, though, is what Brady is going to take.

Re: How will Josh get Moss open ?

I take it for granted that NFL teams have finally figured out they need to double-cover Moss. What took them so long I do not know. So the Giants will probably do this, too. Thus, in an effort similar to how we beat the Chargers, the other receivers will catch a lot of balls. I'd predict a big game for Stallworth, only Gaffney's getting more of the minutes these days, so I'll predict a big game from Gaffney. And Kevin Faulk again. Possibly Welker too. Hopefully Watson.

I say he packs a .38 and does it Billy Cole style?

Seriously, play action, move the receiver in motion. That reverse the last game was a great way to get the other team's focus on him. It really helped open things up for everyone else.

.

I say put Moss out all by himself, split as far away as possible. Make NY put two men on him. Then have a field day throwing to Welk, Stallworth, and Gafney. Oh, and Watson and Faulk. Am I leaving anyone out???

Then, if the Gints decide they're getting burned too much by having two men on Randy, and pull one off, then, bingo, there he is!!!

:D

I like our chances.

Moss catches at least 2 TDs in the Super Bowl. Take that to the bank.

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT. this is exactly how i feel.

Let Kevin Faulk run for 33 carries and rack up 200 yards and we win 10-3. I'll take it.

A win is everything.

Re: How will Josh get Moss open ?

Go with the 3TE set or 2TE/1FB set and run the ball right at the Giants. I beleive the Pats will be able to do this. Then eventually have Moss wide right and max protect play action and go deep.

Ditto. As a fan, I won't think any less of him even if he never scores another TD, as long as the Pats win. He is as valuable as a decoy and blocker as he is a pass catcher.
