Senior Bowl thoughts (Wed)

I have been watching the practices these past few days and thought I would get some initial thoughts on what I have seen.

1. Overall, I am not really in love with to many of the players so far. Nobody has been that guy who is making plays every single time and shoots up boards because of their performance. Last year, there was just so much talent on the field you could see real playmakers out there. You can see Mike Singeltary getting frustrated with the linebackers he has to work with.

2. Speaking of linebackers, I am frustrated with the coverage of the north's linebackers, so I have not seen much on Beau Bell and Keith Rivers, which is dissapointing. Mayock has had good things to say about Rivers and I have not heard Bells name mentioned once, not good imo.

3. There is absolutely no one at this game worthy of the #7 pick, except maybe Sedrick Ellis, but we do not really need a DL at that high of a pick. I have liked what leodis McKelon has done and what they have shown of him on tape, but that pick is to high for him.

4. This may sound bias because I went to school there, but one guy that I really do like is Rubin out of Iowa State. He has dominated one on one drills and even 7 on 7's. I think he fits in perfect for a 3-4 NT and would love to get him to back up Wilfork.

5. None of the offensive lineman do anything for me that are at this game. I watched the guy from Boston College a lot because he caught my attention earlier this year. He, along with every other lineman have a lot of work to do to become elite lineman in the nfl. The last couple of years an O-lineman would come out of this game moving quickly up draft boards, not this year.

6. Colt Brennan cannot play QB in the nfl. He has no arm strenght whatsoever.

7. I think the Running back from LSU is a patriot type guy. He seems like the runningback version of Wes Welker. I could see him taking over for Heath Evans. He had some excellent blocks and some tough inside runs.

8. There is talent at the CB position, but it seems raw. I am not sure if there is any guy that I have seen who could step in right away and make an impact. There is size and speed out there, but most of them have to work on their fundamentals. I see lots of guys with 1st round size and speed with 5th round fundamentals. Lots of these guys will be drafted in the 3, 4, 5th rounds, high risk, high reward.

9. One guy who is on the opposite end of that spectrum is Chevious Jackson from LSU, not real fast, but his technique seems very solid. Do you take the measurables over the fundamentals?

10. cannot think of a great number 10, so I will say this: lets go cyclones, beat kansas tonight!

#2: Bell is hurt, Rivers has shown some good things..fast to ball..nose for ball. great coverage

#3. I dont believe in picking because of the draft #..you take the player you want/need because is the best available at whatever your looking at. What happened with Mankins? Not deserving of first round? Look what.

#5 some of the OL are looking good. Cherrilous, Chris Williams, Carl Nicks, Benedict

#6. Agree..and hes so small at 185

#7 Take over for Evans how? Evans plays ST well and is a very good lead blocker when we run. He didnt care about the money he would receive, he wanted to play here after last year. Hester brings us nothing we dont have in Evans and Morris

#8 I think some guys can come in and make an impact right away like McKelvin and maybe Cromartie but he needs to bulk up. Not a huge impact but like Darrell Revis..get better as year goes on

#9 I like Chevis..physical but not overly athletic. Theres a lot of talent at CB and hes gonna be behind Jenkins, McKelvin, Cason, Ikegwonu, Thomas, maybe Cromartie and Porter

Watching the recap on Tues. night with Mayock talking about McKelvin from Troy St. and showing film on him - this guy looks like a Patriots type of player. His open field tackling was huge which is what our DB's have to excel at. I could see a trade down from #7 and us picking him later in the first or early in the 2nd.

McKelvin at #7 would not be a huge reach, he will not last much further than 12, so a small trade down would be about it if that is indeed the guy the patriots want.

I'm not much of a talent evaluator, but I wasn't impressed with Chevous Jackson. He reminded me of Hobbs (on fly routes) - turned his back to the QB early; uses his hands a lot on the receiver as they run downfield together; doesn't look back for the ball. That's the sort of stuff that gets Hobbs his PI penalties. He was very similar in downfield coverage to Griffin, I thought - but Griffin's a safety.

I don't see McKelvin personally lasting past mid 2nd, but agree a player like him (if there is another) could be found in the 3rd. Lowery of San Jose St. also interests me.

I take this to mean that you think he's not much better than a Charles Godfrey or Tracey Porter (ie. there's depth in the CB class, but not much at the top end). That could be true, but he could be separating himself right now as he plays and practices against better competition.

If McKelvin picks off a ball or 2 on Sat. (if he can actually hold onto one) then he shoots up for sure in the back half of the first round.
