After we Beat down the Giants, Are The Pats the Best Team Ever?

I don't think so, I still think the 1985 Bears Team is the best I've ever seen, they had games won before they ever stepped on the field.

And they played their best in the playoffs.

I was just wondering if some of you yahoos really think the pats should be proclaimed as the best team ever?

I voted no, because I consider this question unanswerable. We can't have teams from different eras actually play each other, nor compare them fairly due to a host of era-dependent variables.

I think it will be better simply to call the Pats "the most accomplished team of all time".

I think you have to look at how dominate a team is within that year. I have never seen a team put fear in another team like the 85 Bears.

I haven't voted yet while I ponder the Pats' merits vs. the '89 49ers and '91 Redskins, but the '85 Bears' success is inflated by circumstance, IMO. Without a doubt they deserve to be in the discussion of "best of all time", but that D preyed on a league relatively weak in offensive creativity (the 49ers were suffering their SB hangover and the other good offensive team, Miami, beat them handily). The Bears started their postseason run playing in a hurricane and poor Phil Simms never had a chance. Then they faced warm-weather Los Angeles with the awful Dieter Brock at QB. They finished off the run vs. Tony Eason.

The '86 Bears went 14-2 (with one loss coming on a late TD bomb vs. LA) and the D was statistically better than the '85 version. Yet nobody ever talks about them. Why? Because they went one-and-done vs. Washington when Gibbs implemented a max-protect scheme with his two stellar TEs Didier and Warren and had Jay Schroeder pick on Chicago's very mediocre CBs. The 2007 Pats would have done the same thing to the '86 and especially the '85 Bears. Brady would have killed their 46 blitz. We would have laughed at watching that Chicago secondary try to cover Moss, Welker and Stallworth much like we were laughing watching the Bears try to cover Nat Moore that MNF game when Miami beat them 38-24.

No team is dominate. A team may, however, be dominant.

As for the 85 Bears, that's the best defense I've ever seen. The offense wasn't exactly superb, unless of course they were playing the Patriots.

I'll add that at this point, there's a fuzzy thing called the "team" that loses and gains players, but has some core players that remain the same, that carries on year after year. Like the "Steelers of the 1970s" or the "49ers of the 1980s."

When you look at those dynasties, we're staking a claim to top-dog status, assuming 1 more ring after this year, with the same nucleus. That'll be "one for the thumb," in addition to the perfect season.

Throw in a threepeat, and I think even Tom Brady might admit to a feeling of satisfaction (which of course is a dangerous thing.)

You sent them packing...............quite a performance yesterday, can honestly say I've never seen a team try to give away a game as many times as the Giants did yesterday, INT fumbled back to Green Bay, punt late in the game fumbled, but luckly recovered, holding on a TD run, two missed FG's......................quite a performance, looked like a gorilla trying to bang a football...........

You may be right, but to give one example of what I mean by the difficulty of mixing eras: these Patriots have the benefit of familiarity with the 46 - it was very much a novelty that year, IIRC. There would also be more "beef" on the Pats' side than the Bears were used to:

If the Bears were scheduled against a different team then the phins that night and won, or Marino got hurt, and they won, would that have made the Bears a better Team?
