Could Volek be another Boller/Feeley?

Don't know what it is, but for some reason this year NE has been drawing career games vs. scrubs like Feeley & Boller. Those guys were making perfect throw after perfect throw. Meanwhile, against the rest of the league it's back to Turd-dom.

So is anyone else a little worried that Volek could start or come in as relief and play a career game vs. our D?

I tell you what, I'm more worried of that happening that the prospects of a gimpy Rivers putting together a great game.

Sure, but like them I doubt that he can match NE until late in the game and NE's offense will eventually force him out of his comfort zone.

Sure, it's possible. But I'm no more worried about that than any number of things which could go wrong. You remember guys like Boller and Feeley, but over the years there are just as many terrible QBs that BB defenses have eaten for lunch.

To use an outside analogy, it's like how the Red Sox always seem to have problems with scrub lefties they've never faced before. It doesn't actually happen every time, and usually doesn't, but you only remember the times it did.

I'm willing to bet that the Patriots Defense knows more about Rivers' tendencies with this Chargers team than what Volek's tendencies are with the same personnel. Mainly because Volek hasn't really been playing much with this group and we (including me as a Bolts fan) have no idea who he'll click with and what he'll actually do come game time.

Like Feeley/Boller, however, Volek is not an unknown commodity. He played almost a full season (pretty decently, I might add) in 2004, and trust me BB has been doing his homework.

I don't think it would be a question of the Pats' defense worrying, rather that sometimes these things just happen. Feeley's success against the Pats was a function of a gameplan which played to his strengths (The Blueprint, as we'll recall). If Norv comes up with a good gameplan for Volek, he could have some success too. He also might not. That's how it goes.

Volek was the mad bomber in 2004 for Tennessee. He threw a beautiful long ball. I suspect the Pats won't allow him to do that and instead read the defense and pick spots underneath.

Hey dont get me wrong he is good ,but he is a back up for a reason.I would be a littel more nervous if we were playing San Diegnce he gets rattled and he will he will press..

None of these guys would have career games against a pressure defense. That's been the problem with, IMO. I don't think we get consistent pressure on these guys, and early in the game they find their rhythm. Then later we seem to bring more pressure and force a couple of mistakes late in the game. But by then it's a game, and the guy has shredded our pass defense.

We may miss Colvin more than we believe. You don't see Adalius bringing much pressure from the outside, right?

Vrabel has been limited recently. He had great games earlier in the year, but what about recently? He's around the ball but not in the guy's shirt.

That's exactly the way I see this one playing out. Volek will have a great game against our D on Sunday. They Pats will take away the run and leave the pass open for Billy. Hopefully he will make a mistake or two.

As a few have alluded to... Volek may not be as "below-average" as you think.

The guy did have some success in Tenn.

Also.. Feeley... If the guy could get a real shot, he could be a successful starter in the league. Average, perhaps, but not below average, IMO.


The Pats, every once in a while, do seem to have troubles with QBs BB isn't all that familiar with, which would explain some close calls in games that should have been Pats blowouts.

Course, best case scenario is that the prima donna Rivers does play.

The Chargers paid for a guy of that caliber because they were making the transition from Brees to Rivers, and wanted a quality fallback option if Rivers didn't work out.

The Chargers' offense will take a step back if Volek starts, but they did get him with the intention of him potentially starting for that team.

Volek may start the game off well as NE plays conservatively while feeling him out.

But his nice run against some real crappy defenses has caused people to rate him way higher than he deserves. Hell, that was over three years ago. Maybe you see a nice story like Todd Collins every now and then, but does anyone think that story would have gone so pleasantly if NE was one of Washington's final few games?

I think as many others alluded to most of those guys from no-where who looked good against the Pats were injury subs for the starter that the Pats prepared for. This team (pats) does so much film study and identifies trends and tells pretty well. So that is part of what makes them good and something they lose with a sub in.

But knowing that volek is probably 70-80% likely to be the starter means it is not a big surprise. Just the lack of recent film may be an issue.
