All I hear is the Chargers last 8 games they are the best yada yada

Lets take a look at who they played

Baltimore Ravens = terrible
Kansas City Chiefs = terrible
Tennessee Titans = Titans should of won
Detroit Lions = terrible 2nd half of season
Denver Broncos = awful
Oakland = beyond awful

Playoffs
Tennessee Titans
17-6 W Good win

Indianapolis Colts 28-24 W
Good win but 2 key turnovers and Indy wins

When they say the last 8 games the Chargers outplayed NE look at the teams
they beat all but 2 were under 500...So IMO it's not that impressive..

The chargers have had a great second half of the season. They are not playing the way they were week 2.

They beat the Colts. An outstanding football team. They will give the Patriots a tough game. One does not get to the AFCCG by being mediocre.

They will be the toughest team we have played so far.

Bring it on...OUR TEAM IS PRETTY DAMN TOUGH TOO.

The problem with looking at the Chargers last 8 games is that you should probably also look at the Patriots' last 17. Sure, people like to say "you barely beat teams like Baltimore and Philly (in my mind, the most talented team not to make the playoffs)" but forget that there were also very quality wins against opponents like Pitt and Jax in there as well.

My point is, if anyone's making the point that San Diego is hot coming into this game and that gives them any advantage, they're barking up the wrong tree.

So sick or so worried?

The Chargers lead the league in creating turnovers. I expect them to uphold this distinction on Sunday.

i will bet you the Charger create zero turnovers in this game. Any takers?

How can you post that statistic without also noting that no team turned it over LESS this year than the Patriots. The Pats only had 15 giveaways this year, and the only team within five was the Colts (19).

I'll admit that the Chargers are a good team at forcing turnover (hell, they were my fantasy defense all year), but you're not facing Brodie Croyle this weekend friend. If you get turnovers, you're going to have to earn them.

8 game winning streaks are less impressive when the opponent has won 17 in a row. Excuse me if I'm not impressed. Heck, the Colts were on a longer streak when NE played them earlier this year.

I'm certainly not taking that bet with the way NE is protecting the ball. And I agree, I keep hearing about SD creating turnovers but no one mentions how NE avoids them.

Let's take a look at who the Chargers intercepted this year:

Grossman – 1
Brady – 1
Huard – 4
Cutler – 3
Culpepper – 2
Rosenfels – 2
Schaub – 2
Manning – 6
Thigpen – 1
Young – 2
Kitna – 5
Russell – 1

Playoffs –
Young – 1
Manning - 2

So aside from picking off Brady once (he torched you otherwise), and obviously being inside Manning's head, you picked off a who's who of the league's most pathetic list of QBs. Granted, this speaks more to the terrible level of QB play overall, but I still think there's a salient point.

The Chargers faced three elite QBs this year, Brady, Manning, and Favre - and two of the three lit them up.

As I said before, it's only telling to look at how many turnovers the Chargers created if you also compare it against how many the Patriots committed, which as I pointed out above, is the fewest in the league by a significant margin.

I know about the AFC and NFC thing, that the AFC is so much stronger. At this level, I don't feel that applies, I feel both the Packers or the Giants are very good contender's for the prize. Honestly, I'd rather that Pats play the Giants, Brett and his very good young team scare me more the Giants, at least the Pats have played them already this year.

But I do agree, the last half of the Chargers schedule was pretty weak. Then again, they beat Indy at home, so who knows

You can also make the point that the Chargers have had at least 1 INT every game this season, including the one against Brady.

No, they didn't. They didn't intercept Favre, they also didn't intercept Kyle Boller, just to name two. These things are easy to look up.

Edit: Also didn't intercept the immortal Bollinger/Jackson tandem for the Vikings. Or Garrard.

So yes, there's 4 games they did not record an INT.

Oh, and in case you're curious about Brady's stats besides the INT? 25/31 279 3/1. I'll take that again in a second, the Chargers can have their INT.

One problem with dat..New England does not give up the ball

I haven't watched every Chargers game this year, but I've watched a good number of them (including the 5 int game against Kitna and the 6 int game against Manning). My impression is that part of the reason they get so many INTs is because of the excellent pressure they get on the QB (likely because Merriman and Phillips are almost always blitzing), opposing QBs are forced into bad decisions.

Other than Manning, the list I posted earlier in the thread are exactly the type of QBs you would expect to make those sort of mistakes. If you want the exact opposite of that type of QB, I'd introduce you to Tom Brady.

I'm not saying the Chargers CBs aren't playmakers, they are, but I feel like a lot of their INTs are accumulated the same way in which Asante's are, by feasting on the mistakes of lousy QBs. I think there's enough evidence at this point to suggest that no matter how much pressure you put on Brady, he's very unlikely to have a serious lapse in judgment.

Am I saying there's no way they'll pick him off? Of course not. But the same formula their D used to force so many bad throws this year is not exactly Kryptonite to Tom Brady.

The chargers have two great edge rushers to create pressure and their DBs have great ball skills...this much is obvious. What isn't clear is how well these guys hold up when the pressure isn't there to force errant throws. How well do the cover? How well do they defend passes? We'll find out soon. No doubt Cromaret's emergence has been a big plus. However in last years game when the Pats had crap for receivers and Tom tossed up 3 picks, the Pats still won. Fast forward to this year and Tom with a different cast of WRs lit these same guys up. So are the Bolts better than they were in September? Looks like. Will that make a difference? Probably not. They will have to go nuts on STs like run 2 kicks back for scores. Tom's not tossing up any pick-6s to this crew.

You know the reason the Chargers lost last year: Chargers beat themselves.

McCree still hasn't forgotten that INT in his mind. He wants redemption.

Merriman and Phillips blitzed much much much less this season around 60% less than under Wade Phillips, mainly due to how much we were forced into nickel by 3+ wide sets.. Passrushing as 4-3 ends is another story.

Interceptions isn't the only reason we led the league in turnovers though. Timely forced fumbles as well thanks to Rivera instilling strip in the minds of all the players which isn't beneficial at some points when the Chargers failed to stop forward momentum.

Favre and Brady played the team unwilling to give the starting spot to Cromartie over a useless utterly useless Drayton Florence I mean did you see how useless Florence was against the Colts he was damn useless.

Weddle has also seen increased playing time over the last half of the season, probably the best tackler in the secondary other than Quentin Jammer. I think that's saying something for a rookie in the defensive backfield. Weddle has stone hands though he dropped 3-4 picks that hit him in his hands when he was in man coverage(A- in man, C+ in zone)

Even as a Pats fan, I can acknowledge Cromartie is one of the best young emerging CB in the league. I thought he would be coming out of college too, despite his injury. What I'm not sold on yet is his coverage. Right now, I think he's very similar to a taller Asante, in that a lot of his picks come from jumping routes. However, especially in the first Colts games he showed flashes of being a true shutdown corner (a term I don't think should be tossed around lightly). Still, we all know that Asante can still be beat 1-on-1 on the right route (though he's been better at this recently), and I feel the same way about Cromartie - especially on Moss. Which is why I found the Chargers fans advocating playing him 1-on-1 particularly insane. No one in the league could cover Moss 1-on-1 all game, not even Champ Bailey.
