Hate to bring it up. But does anyone know the crew yet for this weekend? It's an allstar (whatever that means) crew. Many refs keep fu..... surfacing in these games and I'm compiling a list of the most consistent offenders.

Jeff Tripplet was the ref during that game but I think it was Gregory Steed (Back Judge) who called the bogus penalty against Samuel. The gamebook does not show which ref called the penalty. There has to be more accountability and a PUBLIC record of WHICH refs make these horrendous calls.

These guys better not screw up again. Two years in a row the Pats have lost to the Broncos/Colts/Officials. Hopefully not this time.

Lets say you were a terrible employee. Always screwing up. When given simple instructions, you can't finish the job without having problems. Yet, despite everyone knowing how useless you are, the boss seems to like you. If you were given a name for being this incapable, it would be:

In my opinion, he's one of the worst referees in the NFL.

And then from out of nowhere a flag flies into the frame. The officials confer and one seems to be trying to talk the other out of making a terrible mistake. But, alas, he can't. The yellow has been thrown — obviously in error — and instead of rectifying the mistake, the officials basically award the Broncos the game's first touchdown by giving them first-and-goal at the one. From where the flag came from, I assumed it was thrown by the back judge, a suspicion confirmed by CBS analyst Phil Simms. So I would like to ask Greg Sneed what he saw or thought he saw that would make him so confident in his call that he would be willing to give a team seven points in a 3-0 game. Why, Greg Sneed, why? And if you were so confident in your call, Greg Sneed, what took you so long to throw the flag?"

why can we not have Ed Hochuli? I don't get it. He is by far and away the best ref in the league and yet we never have him (have we had him once this year? I thought maybe once but I can't remember). The reason = NFL is a game of complicated rules with underlying reasons that lawyers understand better, and call the game better. I really do not understand the system under which the NFL assigns its refs.

At the risk of repeating myself too many times, the ref is not the guy you care about. These are all start crews, so just because it's Hochuli in a game doesn't mean it's his crew, etc.

Chargers at Patriots: Jeff Triplette. Tied for 5th out of 17 for best ref for the home team's winning rate (67%). Near the bottom in penalties per game (14th) and yards per penalty (15th) so of course near the bottom in penalty yards per game (15th). 4th-most for percent of penalties called against the visiting team (55%). Middle of the pack (9th) in total points scored per game and near the top (4th) in home team points scored per game. Near the bottom (16th) in amount of penalty yards called against the home team at just 36.8 per game. Tied at the top in the percent of his games in which the visiting team had more penalties than the home team (70%). Overall, home teams did pretty will in Jeff's games during the regular season with not so many penalties called per game -- especially few called against the home team.

As a college football official I like these stats, in particular the low number of penalties. The philosophy of the officials I respect is "get the trainwrecks", we don't need ticky tack calls. Pats are playing the Chargers, not the refs anyway.

I wouldn't mind penalty calls being reviewable with a challenge only. The coach's would understand that they would have to only challenge the most obscene calls as overwhelming majority would not be overturned, but those phatom calls might be - or at least it would open the officials to further scrutiny if they didn't overturn these %#@ calls.

Here are the final NFL referee statistics for the 2007 regular season, including all regular season games:

Possible relationship between the number of penalties called and the rate the home team wins for a particular referee. The strong correlation between the number of penalties per game and the rate the home team wins as usual came out with a positive correlation -- it decreased a bit toward the end of the year but ended up with 0.216.

Referees by penalties accepted per game (followed by home win rate):
Ron had a huge lead and kept the top spot to be the 2007 leader in penalties per game. Notice many of the referees who call lots of penalties also have a high win rate for home teams.
