Felgers show Don Banks said Rivers may not play at all.
He does like the back up Voleck.

I think Norv and Rivers knew all along that he's not going to play, just trying to keep the Pats guessing. No question in my mind that they feel their chances are much better with a healthy Volek, instead of an immobile Rivers.

Did you see him standing on the sidelines last week while the Chargers season hung in the balance?

Banks said that he sees no way Rivers plays the whole game "no way, no how" is what he said. He didn't say he won't play at all but you got the impression that Banks kind of expects him not to.

it doesnt matter who plays rivers or volek... BB will prepare for the both of them... both qbs bring different advantages for their team, rivers with his experience and familiarity with his receiving corps, and volek with his unpredictability (because of not so many performances in sd games) and mobility ( compared to rivers at least)... i believe the coaching staff will find weaknesses to exploit either one...

I hope we see a limping, less-mobile-than-usual Rivers on the field sunday.

Couple of things I'm looking for:

1) Does Rivers practice fully on Friday?
2) How is Rivers listed on the Friday injury report?

If Rivers doesn't practice at all this week, I think it is likely he doesn't play. The Bolts will likely want to put some wrinkles in their gameplan for the Pats. If Rivers gets no reps on the gameplan, a healthy Volek with a full week of 1st team reps would seem to be a better option.

If he practices fully on Friday, I think it is very likely he plays. Why take the reps from Volek unless you are fully intending to start Rivers.

If he has limited participation, I don't think you can draw any conclusions...especially if Rivers is listed as "Questionable". If Rivers ends up "Doubtful", then I would assume Rivers would be available as the backup but wouldn't start.

Of course he will be listed as "Limited" and "Questionable" Friday. That is why I hate the injury report. Marvin Harrison was listed as "Questionable" for over 2 months. Do we really believe that Dungy went to bed every Saturday (early and after saying his prayers) thinking there was a 50-50 shot that Harrison would play the next day?

All you have to do is watch Rivers against the Colts to know he is hurt pretty bad. I can't believe the Colts did not attack him more.

Don't count on those designations as meaning anything. Turner made a mockery of the injury report by announcing right after the Colts game that Rivers would be listed as questionable for the following Sunday. Even if they know right now that he's done for the year, count on him being "questionable."

I think the hope in SD is he will start. But the fear is he will not be effective and Volek will be in as soon as that becomes apparent. If they start Volek and he is not effective, you can't really then go to the injured starter (who is your franchise QB you can't afford to get killed)...

I like Volek's attitude today. Said he won't feel pressured, the game has to be fun, and whatever happens we will all wake up the next day...:D

watch out pats fans, Jim Kelly was once injured for a Bills playoff game and a backup named Frank Reich started the game...

(and of course, tom brady is no warren moon :) )

You don't have to convince me. I would much rather have Rivers play. Volek is a lot better QB.

Volek is a backup for a reason, as any Tennessee fan will be happy to tell you. I'd love to find out that Rivers can't play and Volek is to be the starter.

 Volek is a lot better based on what evidence?

It would be interesting to know whether San Diego designated Whitehurst as their designated third quarterback last week.

A team is allowed to dress a third quarterback and not have him count toward the 45-man roster, so long as he's designated the third quarterback. If your designated third quarterback plays in the game at any time before the fourth quarter, however, you may NOT bring back quarterbacks no. 1 or no. 2.

If the Chargers DID designate Whitehurst last week (or if they routinely did during the year) but do not designate him this week, it tells you that Rivers is not likely to play much. If your number 1 is seriously hurt, you really don't have a choice except to make your number 3 a part of the 45-man roster. Otherwise, you're taking a tremendous gamble. If Volek has to sit out even one play in the first three quarters -- equipment, gets his bell rung, wind knocked out -- the only way Whitehurst can play and later come out of the game is if he's on the 45-man roster.

I guess if I were the Chargers I'd figure that if Whitehurst has to come in before the fourth quarter we're screwed anyway, so might as well not take up the roster spot. Pretty big gamble.

I don't know when teams have to designate the 3d QB or how to find out, but it would be somewhat useful information to have. I imagine it happens on game day.

Based on AJ Feeley and Kyle Boller almost pulling off amazing upsets this year.:rocker:

I wish Volek the very best of luck in almost pulling off an amazing upset on Sunday. In fact, if that's his wish, I sincerely hope it comes true for him.
